Lester Holt’s next job has him working a role he hasn’t held in a very long time: the new guy.
When Holt, who has anchored “NBC Nightly News” for the past decade through coronavirus, the rise of President Trump and a steady increase of horrific shootings across the nation, steps away from the desk on May 30th, he will do it with the knowledge that he still has a few stories to tell. He will start contributing more frequently to “Dateline,” the NBC newsmagazine that in recent years has focused on true-crime stories — and become a major contributor to the news division’s revenue in the process.
Holt, 66 years old, is a regular “Dateline” presence, but usually as the host of the show, not the teller of the stories that fill its hour. “The big buy-in was to be able to do more of the hours,” the anchor...

CBS’ long-running “60 Minutes” has been nominated for 13 News & Documentary Emmy Awards, which the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced on Thursday.
Of those 13 nods, one was for “The Democratic Ticket,” the episode that aired on Oct. 7, 2024, in which Bill Whitaker interviewed Vice President Kamala Harris and that Donald Trump claimed was “a giant Fake News Scam,” accusing CBS of deceitfully editing her answer about Gaza and filing a $20 billion lawsuit stating as much (CBS has maintained Trump’s claims are false).
In a perfect twist of irony, the episode is nominated for Outstanding Edited Interview.
Other nominees for the 46th annual News and Documentary Emmys, which “honor programming content from more than 2200 submissions” that premiered in 2024, include CNN’s “The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper” and “Anderson Cooper 360,” National Geographic’s “Trafficked: Underworlds with Mariana van Zeller,” PBS’s “News Hour” and “Frontline,” while various programs produced by...

Tom Llamas brought NBC Nightly News a rare ratings victory over ABC World News Tonight with David Muir on Thursday (April 17), beating the usually number one broadcast by 19,000 viewers in the key A25-54 demo. According to AdWeek, citing live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen, NBC Nightly News topped ABC in the key A25-54 demo on Thursday and was the No. 4 most-watched show of the week with 5.908 million total viewers. The show’s usual host, Lester Holt, anchored Monday and Friday, while Llamas stepped in to host Tuesday to Thursday. Last week’s averages only counted the Monday-Thursday broadcasts, as Friday’s Good Friday programming was excluded from the weekly and season averages. Thursday’s demo victory is a good sign for NBC News as Llamas is set to take over as Holt’s successor as anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News beginning this summer. NBC News’ digital editorial staff will be able to delay a recent round of staff cuts and will have new layoff protections under the terms of a long-awaited first contract deal, reached on Thursday.
The provisional three-year pact, announced on Friday, offers union members advance notice of layoffs and preferential treatment for rehire and a minimum of eight weeks of severance if they are cut from the job. The deal was reached just weeks after NBC News laid off dozens of employees, including 20 workers covered by the union, after previous rounds of layoffs in 2023 and 2024.
If ratified, the deal will cover some 300-odd union members who work on the digital side at NBC News, NBC News Now and Today as reporters, producers, editors, designers and videographers, among other roles. A ratification vote is currently set for Tuesday.

The NBC News veteran plans to step away in early summer from his anchor duties on “NBC Nightly News,” which he has held since 2015. After that, he plans to devote himself full time to NBC News’ “Dateline,” which he has anchored since 2011.
“After 10 years, 17 if you include my years on the weekends, the time has come for me to step away from my role as anchor of ‘Nightly News.’ It has truly been the honor of a lifetime to work with each of you every day, keeping journalism as our true north and our viewers at the center of everything we do,” Holt said in a memo to staffers Monday. “But before we play the walk off music, I have another announcement. If there is one overarching theme of the best-laid plans by TV news organizations for covering the 2024 election night, it is “transparency.”
Wary of what happened four years ago, it seems that every channel is gaming out how best to not only show the numbers, but how the numbers came to be, what they really mean, and why they matter.
In a world where one call by a TV channel can throw a campaign into chaos, everyone involved seems to understand how high the stakes are.
The early Arizona call made by Fox News and the Associated Press in 2020 still looms large in newsrooms. Both parties, of course, ultimately stood by their call, and they were vindicated in the end, but according to executives and on-air talent at multiple TV networks that spoke with The Hollywood Reporter, the lessons of that call are still being felt.

Election Day is here, and the major news networks are prepared for a long night — and potentially a long week.
With over 50 million people early voting in the 2024 Presidential Election, Tuesday night will offer plenty of results to thumb through even if an ultimate winner isn’t called until later in the week, and most of the news networks will kick off their election night coverage at 6 p.m. Et, with CNN even starting at 12 a.m. Et while NBC News begins at 5 p.m. Et.
MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki will return to the Big Board — and will even be livestreamed on Peacock and other social platforms — while Fox News will see Bill Hemmer steering the “Bill”-board.
Most networks have scheduled eight hours of election night programming from 6 p.m. Et to 2 a.m. Et, with a result for the presidential showdown between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump not expected immediately.

For NBC News, Election Night starts before the sun goes down.
Beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, November 5th, pairs of anchors ranging from Tom Llamas and Hallie Jackson to Savannah Guthrie and Lester Holt to Craig Melvin and Kate Snow will each staff a block of coverage of results from the 2024 presidential election between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. NBC will offer its stations 24 hours of coverage overall, and stream it as well, and will do so starting at a time that in the past might still have been reserved for local programming — and will potentially launch two hours ahead of its direct broadcast competitors.
“We are going up earlier than we ever have on the network, and we are staying up continuously longer than we ever have on the network,” says Janelle Rodriguez, executive vice president of programming for NBC News. Look for Guthrie...

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Thursday that initial assessments showed the state was spared the “worst case scenario” from Hurricane Milton, even though there was substantial damage.
“The storm was significant, but thankfully this was not the worst-case scenario,” DeSantis said at a briefing this morning, adding that the hurricane weakened before landfall.
“Definitely the surge did not reach Helene levels,” the governor said.
DeSantis said that Sarasota County had the most significant storm surge, between 8-10 feet, compared to Hurricane Helene, which had 15-20 feet in some areas.
At least four people were killed, the AP reported, while media outlets reported that more than 3 million were without power.
The center of Milton was pulling away from the state this morning, but there were still strong gusty winds and heavy rainfall in the area around Cape Canaveral, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor has warned residents to evacuate as Hurricane Milton approaches Florida.
“I can say without any dramatization whatsoever: If you choose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you’re going to die,” Castor said on CNN on Sunday.
Hurricane Milton is expected to wreak havoc in the Tampa Bay metro area on Oct. 9 – it was said to start as at least a Category 3 storm. Around 15 million people are under flood watches, and 11 million are at risk for tropical tornadoes in eight counties.

Hoda Kotb announced on Thursday that she was leaving The Today Show to spend more time with her children. Her last episode will air in January 2025. Brian Williams may have found his next TV-news job….except it won’t be on traditional TV.
The veteran NBC News and MSNBC anchor is in late-stage discussions to host a live Election Night special on Amazon Prime Video, according to five people familiar with the matter. The aim, these people say, is to have a non-partisan discussion of that evening’s events. If the project comes to fruition, it could mark the first entry into news-related programming by one of the industry’s stand-alone streaming giants, which have largely focused on movies, scripted original series and reality programming.
The concept isn’t necessarily guaranteed to be completed, these people cautioned. Amazon declined to make executives available for comment. Through a spokesman, Williams declined to comment.

Hoda Kotb, an NBC News mainstay who stepped up to co-anchor the flagship hours of NBC’s “Today” when longtime host Matt Lauer was ousted in 2017, will leave the program at the beginning of next year, opening not one, but two important roles at the network’s flagship morning franchise.
Speaking Thursday morning on the program, Kotb cited a desire to spend time with two young daughters. “I realized it was time for me to turn the page,” after a recent 60th birthday, she told colleagues on the program. She noted that she had children later in life and that “they deserve a bigger piece of my time pie that I have.” She is expected to continue to contribute to the program after she departs in early 2025.

CBS News is ready to launch a new salvo in TV’s streaming wars.
With many of its rivals bolstering their streaming offerings in recent months, CBS News plans to broaden its efforts by debuting a new signature “whip-around” live-streamed program, “CBS News 24/7” that will rely on journalists both from the national news outlet as well as from CBS local stations — and serve as the new name of the broadband outlet. CBS will also expand current streaming programs led by anchor John Dickerson and the CBS News Washington bureau and launch a 1 a.m. program called “CBS News Roundup” for late-night viewing.
“CBS News 24/7 is a decidedly ambitious evolution of our streaming efforts,” said Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of a unit that comprises CBS News, local stations and syndication, in a statement. “Data backs up our bet on a fresh, timely, and distinctive approach to breaking news and live coverage.

In the pre-coverage of Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, the speech is being billed as the most important of his presidency, what with his dismal approval numbers and what is shaping up to be very difficult campaign for reelection.
Moreover, so much attention has been paid to the president’s age — at 81, he is the first octogenarian on a major party ticket — that any kind of slip up will be seized upon by his rivals.
Then again, Biden’s most memorable moment last year was an exchange with House Republicans over Social Security, showing that the president had command of the stage. That’s why it’ll be interesting to see if GOP members restrain themselves so as to not give the president the opportunity this year.

Updated, with latest results: Donald Trump and Joe Biden dominated a majority of Super Tuesday contests this evening, making it all the more certain that the November election will be a rematch.
Biden and Trump were projected to be the winners, by a wide margin, of party primaries in California, Colorado, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Maine, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Alabama, Utah and Tennessee. Biden also was projected to win Vermont, and Trump won a caucus in Alaska.
The lingering question was whether Nikki Haley would continue her bid for the Republican nomination as Trump’s last remaining rival. She was projected to win Vermont, denying Trump a sweep of all Super Tuesday contests. Referring to Trump’s speech earlier in the evening, her campaign said in a statement, “Unity is not achieved by simply claiming, ‘we’re united.'”
Otherwise, the former president scored lopsided margins of victory.

The suspense this Super Tuesday may be in watching how all of the networks try to make the night suspenseful.
Some 16 states and one territory will vote: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia. A Democratic caucus also is being held in American Samoa, and Iowa Democrats also will reveal their results.
But with Joe Biden and Donald Trump on their way to a rematch in the 2024 presidential election, coverage Tuesday will focus on margins of victory, when each candidate will clinch their nomination and what’s next from now until Election Day. There also will be attention to down-ballot races, including California’s Senate primary to fill the seat long held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-ca).

Kate Snow, the NBC News veteran who has anchored the network’s Sunday broadcast of “NBC Nightly News” since 2015, plans to exit the post next week, she disclosed to viewers of the program Sunday evening, citing growing responsibilities tied to streaming content.
The move may be a sign that her presence is needed elsewhere. Snow, who is also a senior national correspondent for NBC News, has since September of 2022 co-anchored parts of “NBC News Daily,” a set of daytime hours that both stream on NBC News Now and appear in the daytime schedules of all NBC affiliates. NBC News has placed increasing emphasis on reaching viewers with streaming content, and has continued to expand the original programming it offers in that venue. Those duties, plus those that have Snow reporting on stories during the week for “Today” and the weekday broadcasts of “NBC Nightly News,” have begun to add up.

A small contingent of journalists gathered near the Canadian border earlier this morning to watch as Dixville Notch, Nh, continued its tradition of casting the first ballots on an election day.
Nikki Haley cleaned Donald Trump’s clock in this hamlet — 6 votes to none.
As the day goes on, network correspondents are fanning out across the state at precincts to talk to actual voters, after months in which the first-in-the-nation primary was judged and assessed by polls. Commentary and analysis is focusing on whether
Haley and her top surrogate, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, blitzed the airwaves on Monday, while Trump held a final rally in Laconia, Nh, where he predicted that Haley would be out of the race after tonight. He was interrupted by climate protesters, who have been a frequent presence at events in recent days.

Have you heard it’s cold in Des Moines? The subzero temperatures are making Monday’s caucuses in Iowa the coldest on record, a running theme of coverage throughout the day and into this evening. It’s not trivial, as the frigid weather may very well impact turnout.
As Iowa’s first votes of the 2024 presidential race come in, expect a lot of analysis, punditry and prediction, even if the results represent just a sliver of the primary electorate. The Hawkeye state’s primacy as the first-in-the-nation often obscures the peculiarities of the caucus system, unless there is some kind of glitch, which is what happened four years ago with the Democrats.
That said, networks see the caucuses as the kickoff of what is hoped a spike in viewer interest in the presidential contest, as was seen in 2020 and 2016. All of the broadcast networks are planning for ongoing coverage of...
