On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller would be developing a Friday the 13th series called Crystal Lake for A24 and the Peacock streaming service. The lengthy writers strike slowed down the progress of the show – but now that the strike is over, Crystal Lake is probably getting back on track, and since Friday the 13th has come back around on the calendar, we thought this would be a good time for us to share Everything We Know About Crystal Lake!
May 2024 Update: Well, we’re back to the drawing board, because A24 has decided to “go a different way” with the material, moving ahead with Crystal Lake without the involvement of Bryan Fuller. The search for a new showrunner is underway. So for right now, it could be said that we don’t know anything about what Crystal Lake will be. We only have an...

I've always been obsessed with horror. From childhood, when I bunked with my siblings and primas, we told each other spooky stories in the middle of the night to rock ourselves to sleep. Every evening we would take turns telling stories, and the stories seemed to get scarier and scarier. When it was my night to tell a story to the group, I knew I had to bring the best jump scares. I'd find myself spinning stories until my sisters' and primas' bodies would tense up in fear. I knew then that horror stories were something I could weave. There's something about having fear knotted up in your belly; it's like riding a roller coaster and waiting for the thrill of the drop.
Horror has always been a part of my life, so it felt natural for me to work on a book like "The Black Girl Survives in This One.

Fourteen and a half months have gone by since it was announced that original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller – fresh off winning the U.S. copyright to the 1980 film after a lawsuit that stretched on for years – was teaming up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian, production company A24, the Peacock streaming service, and showrunner Bryan Fuller (whose credits include Hannibal and Pushing Daisies) to develop a new Friday the 13th streaming series called Crystal Lake. There haven’t been many updates since then… which isn’t surprising to fans of the Friday the 13th franchise, because we’ve gotten used to not getting any new content. But Crystal Lake might actually make it into production soon! Fridaythe13thFranchise.com reports that the show was once expected to start filming in March of 2024, but due to the writers and actors strikes that brought most projects...

Much like movies, television, and streaming platforms, it’s been a densely packed year for horror books as well. If the selection of horror movies available this year feels overwhelming, it pales in comparison to the horror renaissance that the book world offered this year.
The horror book industry has truly become more robust and expansive than ever, with 2023 bringing no shortage of fear-inducing reads through fiction and nonfiction alike.
Whether you’re in the mood for supernatural chills, slasher thrills, visceral terror, or insight into your favorite horror films and tropes, 2023 had it all.
Here are the ten best horror reads of the year.

Jordan Peele is gearing up to share a new anthology celebrating Black horror. Entitled Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror, the collection is due out on October 3rd via Random House.
Peele — who has earned quite a bit of acclaim in recent years for creating top-notch psychological horror films, like Get Out, Us, and Nope — curated Out There Screaming, handpicking all-new short horror stories by 19 Black authors. He also wrote the foreword for the 400-page collection. Pre-orders are ongoing.
Promising stories that “prey on everything we think we know about our world… and redefine what it means to be afraid,” Out There Screaming is poised to be an inventive entry in the canon of horror fiction. If the sample excerpt — a snippet of N. K. Jemisin’s “Reckless Eyeballing,” currently available to read on the book’s Amazon page — is any indication, fans can expect to dive...

Following the successful run of his Comedy Central series “Key & Peele,” Jordan Peele made a well-received pivot to the psychological horror genre, starting with his 2017 feature “Get Out” starring Daniel Kaluuya followed by 2019’s “Us” with and 2022’s “Nope.” His current catalog of thrillers center on themes of Blackness in America, pitting the sometimes horrifying reality of these experiences against the classic supernatural tropes of scary movies.
Now, the actor, writer and director is releasing a new book, “Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror,” a hard-cover curation of some of the best horror stories from 19 Black writers. Peele edited the anthology and wrote the foreword for the book, which is already a No. 1 new-release on Amazon.

My to-be-read pile is shamefully big, but that never stops me from adding more. I cherish getting lost in a good book, but a novel is more of a commitment than chipping away at movies on my to-watch list. The conspicuously titled 101 Horror Books to Read Before You’re Murdered may make that stack of books to read even more intimidating, but it also helps narrow down which tales of terror are worthy of being moved to the top.
Following a foreword by Bird Box author Josh Malerman, writer Sadie “Mother Horror” Hartmann explains why you should trust her choices implicitly. As the owner of the horror fiction subscription service Night Worms and the editor-in-chief of publisher Dark Hart Books, she’s an unassailable authority on horror literature — even if she’s a self-proclaimed scaredy cat who rarely watches genre movies.

A Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake is coming our way from Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, Friday the 13th franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service. Unfortunately, any progress the show was making has been put on hold during the writers strike – but earlier this year, Fuller assembled a writers room that spent six weeks brainstorming ideas and breaking down the scripts that will make up the first season of the series. Two of the writers in that room were author Tananarive Due, who has written multiple novels over the last thirty years and executive produced Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror, and her husband Steven Barnes, who is also an author and has also contributed scripts to shows like Stargate Sg-1, The Outer Limits, and the ’80s version of The Twilight Zone. ‘Tis the season of gift giving, but when it comes to books, the choices can be overwhelming. This year has unleashed an endless selection of great options to fill those bookshelves, from fiction to graphic novels to nonfiction. Where do you even begin, you might be wondering?
These 13 books are excellent gifts for you or the horror-loving reader in your life.
Clown in a Cornfield 2: Frendo Lives by Adam Cesare
Quinn, Rust, and Cole are still reeling from their traumas of surviving the Kettle Springs massacre when it seems to be starting anew. It’s a breakneck slasher sequel that doesn’t waste any time getting to the action and suspense. Cesare understands slashers- and, more importantly, slasher sequels- and crafts a strong narrative around the hardened survivors from the first novel. In true slasher sequel style, the body count is higher along with the brutal deaths that hurt.

"We've always loved horror, it's just that horror, unfortunately, hasn't always loved us," author and film historian Tananarive Due says in the opening to Shudder's extensive "Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror." The sweeping deep-dive confronts the truth about Black representation in horror, spanning from the infamous 1915 film "The Birth of a Nation" through cinematic beacons such as "The Night of the Living Dead" to modern fare like Jordan Peele's "Get Out." Based on Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman's 2011 book of the same name, the documentary (directed by Xavier Burgin) is a deeply insightful and engaging document, rendering the Black voice as forever vital to the genre.

"In most families, the danger doesn't come from some stranger – danger comes from someone you already know..." Shudder has unveiled the trailer for a horror anthology film titled Horror Noire, a showcase of six different stories of Black horror. "Six stories, one film. Experience the next chapter of Black horror." This is a spin-off feature inspired by the outstanding documentary with the same title: Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror (which I highly recommend watching). The six stories featured in the anthology are titled: Daddy, Bride Before You, Brand of Evil, The Lake, Sundown, and Fugue State. The casts include Lesley-Ann Brandt, Luke James, Erica Ash, Brandon Mychal Smith, Sean Patrick Thomas, Peter Stormare, Malcolm Barrett, and Rachel True, among many others. With new and adapted stories by Tananarive Due, Steven Barnes, Victor Lavalle, Shernold Edwards, Al Letson and Ezra C. Daniels. I'm always down for more creative horror!

Writer-producer Little Marvin grew up a fan of classic horror, from Alfred Hitchcock to “The Exorcist,” but it wasn’t until he was on set at his own creation, the anthological “Them” for Amazon Prime Video, that he says he had an experience that “codified for me what moves me deeply” about genre fare.
Watching from behind a monitor as cinematographer Checco Varese set up a split diopter shot that showed Henry Emory (Ashley Thomas) smiling at the camera while his wife Lucky (Deborah Ayorinde) is behind him smoking, Little Marvin remembers seeing the image freeze-frame in his mind.
“As a kid, loving all of those classic movies, folks who looked like me never populated the center of those frames,” he says. “Here’s this classic Hitchcock frame that back in the day would have only held Janet Leigh or Eva Marie Saint or Grace Kelly, and instead here’s...

Update 2/25: Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw and Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films have issued a statement about the end of The Twilight Zone series.
We greatly enjoyed our time working on The Twilight Zone — particularly when the real world around us often felt more and more like another dimension. We cherished the opportunity to collaborate with so many talented writers, actors and crewmembers. After 20 unique episodes, we have told the stories that we wanted to tell, and CBS All Access was gracious in their understanding of our decision. It was an honor and a privilege to bring audiences a modern re-imagining of Rod Serling’s iconic creation.

It was a big day for AMC at the Television Critics Association winter press tour.
The event was virtual, which has become the norm in the industry due to the pandemic, but there was a wealth of news across the AMC Networks banner.
AMC dropped our first trailer of Kevin Can F**k Himself, featuring Schitt's Creek's Annie Murphy, and it did not disappoint.
Kevin Can F*** Himself probes the secret life of a type of woman we all grew up believing we knew: the sitcom wife.
Kevin Can F*** Himself looks to break television convention and ask what the world looks like through her eyes.
Alternating between single-camera realism and multi-camera comedy, the formats will inform one another as we imagine what happens when the sitcom wife escapes her confines and takes the lead in her own life.

For the first time, performance awards will be gender neutral, replacing the awards for the Best Actor and the Best Actress with a Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance and a Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance.

Some days, it’s impossible to sit down to read a long book. Maybe you’re waiting to be admitted to an appointment, or maybe you’re standing in line. You might be on public transit, where balancing that hardcover doorstopper you checked out of the library is simply impossible. In those moments when your attention could be drawn to something else at any moment, it’s convenient to have something shorter to read.
That’s where the current renaissance of serial fiction comes in. Publishers like Serial Box, Amazon, and apps like Tapas have created a host of short reading experiences when you only have twenty minutes (or less) to spend looking at your device. To know where to get your serial fiction online, whether on your phone or your computer, check out these recommendations to get your fix.
