Last week, in Shane Dawson’s Jake Paul docuseries, former Team 10 COO Nick Crompton made a proclamation that was somewhat revelatory and also blindingly obvious: all of Paul’s headline-grabbing pranks are fake, he said.
This is something of a regrettable state of affairs for Jack Vale -- one of YouTube’s earliest pranksters who has eschewed the genre in recent years amid its descent into new depths of depravity. Rather than stunts that push the bounds of human decency or find their perpetrators in legal hot water, Vale has attempted to hone a family-friendly brand on his 11-year-old channel, which still houses pranks today.
As the genre has changed, however, the 45-year-old has sought to maintain his momentum by foraying onto new platforms, including a podcast called The JackPod in which he waxes philosophical about life happenings and recounts funny family stories. In addition to pursuing feature film and linear TV opportunities,...

A two-year-old content aggregation and discovery app called TopBuzz is gaining the attention of publishers and digital networks alike -- and could serve as an avenue for both nascent and established creators ever in search of new distribution and monetization prospects.
Born out of Toutiao, the popular news aggregation mobile application from parent company Bytedance, the L.A.-based machine learning and A.I.-powered feed serves up everything from snacky food videos (such as Tasty’s 4 Hearty Fall Pastas) to Matthew Santoro's infotainment to silly viral clips (like Dog Mistakes New Toy For Intruder). TopBuzz has rapidly grown from 1.8 million monthly active users in November 2017 to roughly 23 million active monthly users today globally. The algorithm that drives the platform provides customized feeds for each user based on their stated preferences, consumption history, and "sophisticated look alike modeling".

Lest we focus too much on our own digital lives, Jack Vale is here to remind us that dogs need a way to connect with their pals, too. The YouTube star, known for his prank videos, is one of the co-founders of DogLand, a social media app for dogs that is currently looking to crowdfund venture capital.
DogLand offers its users a number of different services, all catered to dogs and their owners. Users can post pictures with their dogs, connect with other dog owners, and find local dog-friendly businesses. “We wanted to do something special for our dogs,” says Vale, who serves as DogLand’s Cmo and its official brand ambassador, in an introductory video, “and the rest of the dogs in the world.”
The DogLand app is currently available for free on the App Store, and it currently has more than 65,000 users; however, BetterPet, the company behind DogLand,...

In a month where the terror attack at the office of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo dominated cable news for weeks, CNN saw the most gains.
The network went wall-to-wall with Anderson Cooper, Chris Cuomo, Jake Tapper, and others on-the-ground in Paris to cover the attack and its aftermath. Viewers responded: compared to January, 2014, CNN was up 63 percent in total viewers during the day, attracting 516,000 viewers, and up 71 percent in the coveted 25-54 demo with an average of 168,000 viewers.

Jack Vale is no stranger to the online masses or even late night talk shows, but Hln wants to get him in front of even more audiences. The television network is planning a new reality TV series based on the YouTube prankster and his family.
According to an Hln blog post from December 22, the upcoming TV show will be called Jack Vale: Offline. The series will follow the life of the YouTuber, his wife Sherry, and their five kids (Jake, Chris, Madysyn, Jaxon, and Jazmyn) through the “creation, planning, execution, editing, and posting of prank videos.” The family will temporarily relocate to Las Vegas, Nevada, to reach a fresh batch of innocent bystanders to prank (people are already familiar with Vale’s antics in his hometown of Manhattan Beach, California).

Video Game High School is now in Freddie Wong's rearview mirror, and his first post-vghs video is a special one. Wong teamed up with Jimmy Kimmel for "Tie Fighters", an action-packed short that involves a men's bathroom, a Windsor knot, and a burning stake. The video stars Wong and Kimmel as they meet in the backstage bathroom at Kimmel's show and argue over which one of them tied a better tie knot. Their argument quickly comes to blows, one thing leads to another, and they ultimately fall through a trans-dimensional portal to a world populated by ties. As you might expect, that setup is a blank canvas on which Wong can show off his dazzling special effects skills. The short debuted during Wong's appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on November 18th. It then made its way to the Rocket Jump YouTube channel two days later. Wong isn't the first...

Jack Vale's social media "experiments" succeed at both entertaining audiences and warning strangers about the content they share on their online profiles. Now, that format has become popular enough to make it onto late night TV. Vale has teamed up with Jimmy Kimmel Live and Chevrolet for a series of pranks where he gathers information on strangers while driving around in a shiny new car. The Kimmel pranks work similarly to the ones that previously claimed millions of views on Vale's channels. Armed with a phone and a Chevy Equinox (which, as viewers are told several times, has built-in wi-fi), Vale picks up his family and Jimmy Kimmel Live sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez before cruising down to Hollywood Blvd. There, he has Guillermo find the Instagram profiles of passersby, who Vale then surprises by reciting their personal information. The video debuted on the September 18, 2014, episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, making...

Jack Vale is the latest YouTube prankster to reach a million subscribers. A husband, father, practical joker, and Fullscreen partner, Vale has succeeded thanks to his appealing personality and his fearless execution. Here are his thoughts on his growing YouTube fame: Tubefilter: How does it feel to have one million subscribers? What do you have to say to your fans? Jack Vale: Humbling. YouTube has allowed me the platform to make a living doing the things I've always wanted to do. I'm grateful. I'll never take for granted the fact that I wouldn't be able to "prank for a living" without my fans...so to all of you who watch my videos, thank you. Tf: What is your favorite prank that you've released on YouTube? Jv: I have several so it's hard to say but if someone was holding a gun to my head, I'd pick the Social Media Experiments.

Popular YouTube pranks often rely on mean-spirited tricks that turn their targets into the butt of the joke, but this April Fools' Day, Defy Media creators are out to prove that pranks don't have to be mean. Smosh, Break.com, and a host of Defy Media prank channels have teamed up for Prank It Fwd, a project that uses kind-hearted pranks to raise money for charity. The Prank It Fwd stunts all use unexpected twists to brighten up the days of their targets. Smosh kicked off the initiative four days before April Fools' Day by releasing a video where Smosh Games host Jovenshire encounters his number one celebrity crush, Emma Watson. Several other pranksters have followed suit. A new episode of Break's Prank Bank gave a waitress her best shift ever. Lahwf's Andrew Hales told random people how beautiful they are. Jack Vale paid the bills of several customers at a car repair shop.
