The rather labyrinthic story unfolds as such. The initial scene shows a raid inside the house of a woman, who turns out she was doing experiments on children she had abducted. The next scene introduce us to lawyer Akira Ninomiya, who is soon revealed to be a psychopath killer, a capacity that grows more intense as the movie unfolds. His only friend, if someone can deem him so, is Dr Kuro Sugitani, another psychopath who acknowledges both himself as one and Ninomiya, and is actually a champion of the complete...

This Bullet Train article contains some spoilers.
Bullet Train comes barreling into theaters loaded with a heaping helping of gratuitous violence. This is no surprise from director David Leitch, who began his career as a stuntman, specifically Brad Pitt’s stuntman. Consequently, Leitch is a master at delivering action and ultra-violence on a grand scale.
The title reflects this and its setting, with the Shinkansen, a 50+ year old network of high-speed railways, colloquially known as the “bullet train” in Japan. Since it began, there has not been a single passenger fatality or injury on board these lines due to either derailments or collisions. That all changes in Leitch’s Bullet Train where a sword through the throat is standard operating procedure.
Bullet Train is based on the 2010 Japanese novel, Maria Bītoru (Maria Beetle), by bestselling author Kōtarō Isaka. This book was translated into English last year and retitled Bullet Train to match the movie,...

Manga based on light novels tend to be a tricky thing to execute. Often the adaptation loses not only the context of the original story through missing internal monologue but also compensates with odd exposition dumps that can see the pages flooded with text that expects a fair amount of understanding on the source material. Consequently, when a manga work is based on a novel, it is almost always...

The classic whodunit genre is seeing a revival of sorts, with tentpole Hollywood blockbusters like “Murder on the Orient Express” and “Knives Out” leading the way and recently even Netflix jumping on the bandwagon with the Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston starring “Murder Mystery” and the Hindi-language film “Raat Akeli Hai” proving to be hits for the streaming platform. Yet another project in the same genre which saw a fair amount of success was 2019’s “Masquerade Hotel” by Masayuki Suzuki, which is based on a Keigo Higashino book and was produced and released, like many Higashino adaptations, after a long drawn-out bidding battle over the book’s rights.
