Twenty-five years ago, I — and millions of Hindi film fans around the world — saw our first Karan Johar movie. “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” — which currently holds the top spot in IndieWire’s list of the best rom-coms on Netflix — was a superhit and instant classic, a story of love and friendship that stood the test of time and charms audiences to this day.
Johar’s latest, “Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani,” (“Rocky and Rani’s Love Story”) written by Shashank Khaitan, is the kind of Bollywood bliss audiences have been craving. It’s entertaining but not dependent on action and violence. It’s star-studded but with genuinely talented actors, not just airbrushed beauty and family names. It’s modern but not Western. It’s family-oriented but not pedantic.
And it’s just a damn good time.

The much-decorated Japanese drama “Drive My Car” was named the best film Sunday at the Asian Film Awards, defeating hot favorite “Decision to Leave.”
Other notable awards went to Japan’s Hirokazu Kore-eda whose “Broker” debuted at Cannes, but which was largely shunned in his home country.
“Decision to Leave,” which started the evening with ten nominations, was nevertheless rewarded with three awards, best screenplay, best production design and best actress for China’s Tang Wei.
While nominations were geographically diverse, the awards on Sunday skewed heavily towards North East Asia –Japan, Korea and Greater China – to the total exclusion of films from India, Indonesia and The Philippines. Snubs included the exclusion of Indonesia’s “Autobiography” and Happy Salma, both of which have been widely lauded on the festival circuit.
The awards ceremony returned to Hong Kong after detours to Macau and Busan and a Covid hiatus in previous years.

KollywoodTNM caught up with Ponniyin Selvan’s jewellery designer Pratiksha Prashant of Kishandas & Co, to decode how the handcrafted ornaments inspired from the Chola era were brought to screen in all their glory in Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus.Saradha UTwitter/ Lyca ProductionsWhen Nandini, arguably the most complex character in Kalki Krishnamurthy’s Ponniyin Selvan, had to be reimagined for the big screen in Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus of the same title, the makers had to pay attention to every nuance and fine line there is to create an aura of mystique around her. The same went for other characters, who were brought to life through the actors’ striking performances, euphonic music, palatial sets, immersive cinematography, and tightly-packed screenplay, but not without the help of their meticulously designed jewellery and costumes. The historical drama does not use exquisite jewels and costumes for an ostentatious flare-up. Nor does it take...

Mani’s usual collaborators have been roped in: double Oscar-winning Ar Rahman to compose the music, lensman Santosh Sivan (it’ll be his sixth collaboration with Ratnam) and Sreekar Prasad for editing. Dhilip Subbarayan is the stunt choreographer with Sharmishta Roy roped in for production design and Eka Lakhani for designing the costumes. The film, which will be a Tamil-Telugu bilingual, is titled Nawab in Telugu. Ratnam has pinned high hopes on this project following the debacle of Kaatru Veliyidai at the box office last year. With the ongoing strike, the shooting of Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, which went on the floors in mid-February, will be stalled until further notice. (Content provided by Digital Native)...
