As a premium cable network, Starz doesn't have to please ad buyers. Instead, it has to please paid subscribers. So while the Nielsen ratings don't play into cancellation and renewal decisions in the same way, they do give us a rough idea of which TV series attract and retain viewers. This summer, The Rook TV show makes its debut on Starz. Will the first season provide the kind of programming viewers want? Will The Rook be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned.

Myfanwy Thomas wakes up at Millenium Bridge in London surrounded by dead bodies.
She doesn't know how she got there, or what happened to the bodies. That's the hook for new Starz drama The Rook, which premieres tonight at 10/9c.
To say the series is a disappointment would be the understatement of the century. It leaves behind many parts of what made the novel it's based on a success.
It would have probably worked better if it was more faithful to the novel.
Emma Greenwell (Shameless) takes on the lead role and does her best as her character pivots her way through the dumbest of scenarios.

Starz has released a trailer for a new series they’ve produced called The Rook. It’s an adaptation of the book written by Daniel O’Malley and the story centers on a woman with amnesia who slowly learns that she is a Secret Service agent who is part of a group that recruits people with supernatural abilities and takes on paranormal threats. She also learns that she has special abilities of her own.
This looks like an interesting series worth checking out and it stars Olivia Munn, Adrian Lester, Ronan Rafter, Catherine Steadman, Jon Fletcher, Shelley Conn, and James D’Arcy.
Here is the synopsis for The Rook:

Starz released its trailer for original series “The Rook” on Tuesday, which stars a very confused — and very much in danger — Emma Greenwell.
“The Rook” is a supernatural spy thriller, which tells the story of Myfanwy Thomas (Greenwell), a woman who wakes up in the rain beside London’s Millennium Bridge with no memory of who she is and no way to explain the circle of latex-gloved dead bodies splayed around her. When Myfanwy discovers she is a high-ranking official in the Checquy, Britain’s last truly secret service for people with paranormal abilities, she will have to navigate the dangerous and complex world of the agency to uncover who wiped her memory — and why she is a target.
Watch the trailer above. In it, Greenwell wonders aloud, “What kind of monster am I?”

Exclusive: There is change at the helm of Starz’s upcoming spy thriller series The Rook, from Lionsgate and Liberty Global. Lisa Zwerling (Betrayal) and Karyn Usher (Bones) have come onboard as showrunners. They will replace in the role The Night Manager‘s Stephen Garrett who remains an executive producer. Meanwhile, Twilight‘s Stephenie Meyer who, via her production company originally brought The Rook to Lionsgate, is stepping away due to differences in creative visions of the project.
The behind-the-scenes change comes early in the production of The Rook, which is currently filming the first two episodes of its first-season order in London. The showrunner switch will have no impact on production, which will continue as scheduled. The Rook is slated to air on Starz in the U.S., and across Liberty Global’s international platforms in 2019.
Zwerling and Usher will executive produce via their Carpool Entertainment production company alongside Garrett under his Character 7 banner.

The life of actor John Heard — the star known for his role in several iconic ’80s and ’90s movies including Big, Beaches, and Home Alone — is being remembered by his Hollywood costars and admirers.
Heard died Friday in Palo Alto, California, the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office confirmed to People. He was 71.
With a four-decade career in Hollywood and more than 200 credits on stage and screen, Heard had a number of high-profile costars.

The day has finally come, Heathens. After three glorious seasons, Salem said goodbye tonight. I'm just not ready for it to end!
At least the show went out with a proper ending on Salem Season 3 Episode 10. True to its warning, Black Sunday corrupted the town and nearly killed everyone. Not many were spared, including some of our main cast.
Salem has always felt like a fast-paced, supernatural thriller. It's creepy but with a dramatic edge, and it's not afraid to go there. (Case in point: the sibling incest on Salem Season 3 Episode 9.)
It makes sense that the finale would throw everything at us. Every twist and surprise to leave us wanting more. I loved that it wasn't a seamless "happily ever after" moment, because Salem isn't like that.
Did anyone expect all the sad endings this episode? I know it's the series finale, but seven of our main...

When a network launches a new show late in the season and schedules it on Friday nights, that's typically not a very good sign that they have much faith in it. Will The Messengers surprise critics and The CW execs and become a big hit in the ratings or, will it flop? Cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.

You know that old line about "Please, don't shoot the messenger"? Well, The CW has done just that. The network has cancelled The Messengers after one season. Only three episodes have aired thus far.

There will be no Second Coming for The CW's "The Messengers." Due to low ratings, unimpressive reviews and an impossible Friday time period, it was already a foregone conclusion, but now it's also official: "The Messengers" won't be back for a second season. Yes, it's a early for The CW to be prepared to go out on that limb, since only three episodes have aired. And yes, I'm already prepared for several people to talk about networks no longer giving shows time and whatnot. There are, however, realities that exist. "The Messengers" actually premiered with a somewhat respectable 1.195 million viewers and a 0.3 rating among adults 18-49. The second week dropped to 771,000 viewers and a 0.2 rating among adults 18-49. Last week's new episode of "The Messengers" drew 651,000 viewers and did a 0.2 rating among adults 18-49. It did a coveted 0.0 rating and a 0 share among female viewers 12-17. That, apparently, has been...

Before a busy Television Critics Association press tour day that featured the renewal of eight fall dramas for next season, The CW also announced its adjusted midseason schedule. The spring announcement includes time slots for "iZombie" and "The Messengers," a shift for "Supernatural" and a home for the new reality competition "Cedric's Barber Battle." From "Veronica Mars" veterans Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright, "iZombie" will premiere on Tuesday, March 17 at 9 p.m. after a new episode of "The Flash." The drama, which stars Rose McIver as a medical resident who becomes a zombie and uses her undead state to help fight crime, will be taking the place that "Supernatural" has filled strongly this season. Don't worry about "Supernatural," though. The freshly renewed series will shift to Wednesdays at 9 p.m. after "Arrow" starting on March 18. "The 100," also newly renewed on Sunday morning, will complete its second season on March...

After collapsing, all five individuals come back to life just hours later with inexplicable powers, including strength and the power to heal. But once things begin to become more clear, those affected realize that they might be Earth's only hope for stopping the Rapture ... or perhaps, they're causing it. The CW’s new fall schedule is here. You’ll notice it looks a lot like the current one. Most shows are staying where they are, with some exceptions to accommodate new titles and a couple returning favorites getting pushed to midseason.

It’s always nice when one of the CW’s former stars returns to the network in a big way. One Tree Hill alum Shantel VanSanten will make her return to the CW by starring in its drama pilot The Messengers. For those of you keeping count at home, this means that if the pilot is given a series order, she’ll have to choose between it and her current starring gig on Fox’s cop drama Gang Related. Have no fear, fellow CW worshipers – VanSanten has put The Messengers in first position to Gang Related, meaning she’ll jump ship in a heartbeat so long as The Messengers moves past its pilot.
