He might be technically retired from what we consider regular fiction filmmaking, but since his TIFF premiered Her Smell back in 2018 Alex Ross Perry‘s output has been fruitful, plentiful and now we this hybrid we can say imaginative and not trapped by conformity. Putting together the members of Pavement, Zoe Lister-Jones, Michael Esper and Kathryn Gallagher, the behind the line crew folk include cinematography Robert Kolodny and editor Robert Greene. Had things gone according to plan, Anna Kendrick would be attending the Toronto International Film Festival in support of her directorial debut, “Woman of the Hour”, which is making its world premiere at the film fest.
However, because Kendrick is a proud member of SAG-AFTRA, she’s abiding by strike regulations prohibiting union members from promoting their projects.
“I am heartbroken to not be with you all in this moment.”
As People reported, prior to the film’s premiere screening at TIFF, the audience was read a special message from Kendrick.
“[This] film festival has proven time and time again that it is an artist-driven festival, and it has been my absolute honour to have TIFF as part of my career for the last 14 years,” Kendrick said in the statement, which was read by one of the movie’s producers.

For her directorial debut, Anna Kendrick chose a particularly daunting task in tackling the story of the notorious serial killer Rodney Alcala, who staged a terrifying murder spree in the ’70s in which he is thought to have killed upwards of 130 people. The center of Kendrick’s movie, Woman of the Hour, focuses on his appearance in plain sight on a 1978 episode of ABC’s The Dating Game, in which he was the bachelor that contestant Cheryl Bradshaw wound up choosing to go on a date with, not knowing that this was a period in the middle of his murderous spree.
ABC’s 20/20 devoted a full hour in May 2021 to the story of the cold-blooded killer who died in incarceration, but Kendrick’s film version has more on its mind that just the facts. It had its world premiere Friday as a Special Presentation at the Toronto Film Festival.

Beanie Feldstein is married! On Thursday, Vogue confirmed the actor had tied the knot with her longtime partner, Bonnie-Chance Roberts, on May 19 at Cedar Lakes Estate in Upstate New York.
"It is our happy place together," Feldstein told the publication. "I grew up going to summer camp for ten years, and my parents and both sets of my grandparents met at summer camp, so camp is a lineage of love through the generations of my family. Even though we met in London and fell in love on a film set, to get married at a camp was a truly beautiful emotional homecoming."
Of their wedding weekend, Feldstein said, "On Friday night, we wanted to take our guests on a true camp experience with bandana tablecloths and s'mores for dessert, with pennant banners and friendship bracelets: a true 'We're at summer camp' feeling." Pavement, the venerable indie rock band fronted by Stephen Malkmus, is getting its own feature film treatment.
Her Smell director Alex Ross Perry is helming the film, which is in the early stages of planning and comes after Ross Perry debuted the unexpected Slanted! Enchanted! A Pavement Musical with an Off Broadway run earlier this month.
Pavement, which put out a number of records on Matador Records, is best known for songs such as Cut Your Hair and Stereo, recently reunited for their latest reunion tour.
Perry told The New Yorker that the musical was part of a wider Pavement Cinematic Universe, although details are scarce, even to him, it seems.
Legitimate, ridiculous, real, fake, idiotic, cliché, illogical,” he told the magazine, drawing comparisons to Bob Dylan’ film canon. “You take the Todd Haynes Bob Dylan movie, the Scorsese documentary, the Pennebaker documentary, and the movie Dylan himself directed that...

After a furiously prolific beginning to his career, with six features in less than ten years, we’ve been waiting to hear what Alex Ross Perry is working on after 2018’s Her Smell. With production already underway on his next movie, it’s now been unveiled: a project that will keep him in the world of rock and roll.
Earlier this month, a new production from Alex Ross Perry entitled “Slanted! Enchanted!: A Pavement Musical,” had just two performances at New York City’s Sheen Center. Now, thanks to a new piece in The New Yorker, the production has been revealed to be part of a much larger cinematic project dedicated to the Stephen Malkmus-led indie rock band.

What could sum up the spirit of Pavement’s music better than seven tap-dancing Santas stepping to the guitar break from “Gold Soundz”? Or a team of theater kids giving jazz hands while they all sing “Shady Lane”? Or “AT&T” turned into a boot-scootin’ line dance, complete with cowboy hats and yeee-haws? Slanted! Enchanted!: A Pavement Musical is all these things and more.
The whole idea of turning the Pavement songbook into a jukebox musical might sound crazy, but nothing could prepare you for how utterly bonkers this show is.

Two former cast members of Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill, including Tony-nominated featured actress Celia Rose Gooding, released statements today accusing the production of doing, as Gooding writes, “harm to the trans and non-binary community both onstage and off.”

Schell writes that during previews of the musical in 2019, they were told by their gynecologist that surgery for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome was needed, but that the news was either ignored or...

Jagged Little Pill, the Tony Award nominated musical inspired by the Alanis Morissette album, will reopen at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre Thursday, Oct. 21, producers Vivek J. Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David and Eva Price announced today. Tickets are on sale now.
“Jagged Little Pill is about the complicated and harrowing effects of what it means to be disconnected from one another – and the beautiful, exhilarating healing that can happen when we rally together in those tough moments, to become beacons of vision and empathy for one another,” said Morissette in a statement. “That has never felt more real than during this tumultuous past year, and I could not be more thrilled to glimpse the light at the end of this long tunnel that the live arts community has endured.”
Morissette continued, “This amazing family of Broadway artists will be raising their voices together again on stage this fall – and it will...

Kathryn Gallagher hit the parental jackpot. While most of us only imagined what it would be like to have The O.C.'s Sandy Cohen as our dad, she gets him in real life. So, is it everything we imagined it would be? On Tuesday, March 30, Kathryn revealed on TikTok what it's really like to have Peter Gallagher, the actor behind Sandy, as her father. "So, one question I always get is, 'What's it like having Sandy Cohen as a dad?' 'Is he really like that in real life?'" the 27-year-old singer said on the app. "He's just my dad," she shared, suggesting he's a normal guy at home. Peter then popped up behind her, holding out a plate with a creamy bagel....

Alanis Morissette has dropped a demo version of her song “Predator,” originally written for the Broadway musical Jagged Little Pill.
In the show and on the original cast soundtrack “Predator” is performed by Kathryn Gallagher and the ensemble cast, with lyrics written by Morissette and music written by Morissette and Michael Farrell. In her stripped-down demo version, Morissette highlights the song’s vulnerability against a piano track: “My goodness is commendable but won’t pull your heartstrings/This magnet for predators is dying to be discerning.”

The theater industry’s pandemic-shortened season seems to have opened up the Grammy playing field for cast albums, as only two of the six just-announced nominees for the 2021 awards represent the usually-dominant Broadway.
The two Broadway cast albums included in today’s nominations for Best Musical Theater Album are David Byrne’s American Utopia on Broadway and Jagged Little Pill, the musical consisting of Alanis Morissette songs. Two London cast albums were nominated, as were two from Off Broadway.
Last year, all five nominees in the category were Broadway productions (Hadestown won), while the year before Broadway accounted for four of the five nominees, with TV’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert filling out the category (Broadway’s The Band’s Visit won). Previous years show a similar pro-Broadway pattern.

Blame the coronavirus for this year’s drastically reduced roster of eligible Tony Award nominees, and Tony nominators for overlooking at least a few possibilities. Even with only 18 Broadway productions in the running for a 2020 award, feelings were bound to be hurt.
Let’s start with the good news: The list of nominees for the 74th Annual Tony Awards is a solid one, with no noticeable contenders – at least to my eye – sneaking in due to the decreased competition. Good luck to voters parsing their choices for one castmate over another – Sea Wall/A Life‘s Jake Gyllenhaal or Tom Sturridge? Slave Play‘s Ato Blankson-Wood or James Cusati-Moyer, and Chalia La Tour or Annie McNamara? Jagged Little Pill‘s Kathryn Gallagher, Celia Rose Gooding or Lauren Patten?
Of course we’ll never know how the list would be different if Six, West Side Story...

The Tony Awards nominations were announced on Thursday, October 15 by Tony winner James Monroe Iglehart (“Aladdin”). The reveal of the roster of contenders was carried on the Tonys YouTube channel. While the nominations for the 74th annual Tony Awards were determined by 41 theater professionals, winners will be decided by 784 members of the Broadway community.
Only 18 shows were eligible for consideration by the nominating committee. On the play side, there are 10 original works and four revivals in the running. Over on the musical side, four new tuners are in contention; no musical revivals qualified. The cutoff date for eligibility was February 19, 2020. As both the Bob Dylan tuner “Girl From the North Country” and a new revival of “West Side Story” opened after that, don’t look for them on the list of nominations below.

With the 2020 Tony Awards going virtual this fall, all eyes are on the prospective nominees. Just four musicals were able to open before the newly announced February eligibility cutoff, so these tuners could wind up with massive nomination tallies. Good News: The 2020 Tony Awards will be held virtually this fall, giving the shuttered Broadway industry a desperately needed shot of good will. Bad news: Only four new musicals opened before the new eligibility cut off date of February 19, 2019. The limited number of contenders has industry insiders scratching their heads as to what the musical categories will look like.
The four new musicals competing for the coveted Best Musical prize are “Jagged Little Pill,” “The Lightning Thief,” “Moulin Rouge!,” and “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.” Under the usual Tony Awards rules for show categories, there can only be three nominees for categories with four or five eligible contenders. So one of these four musicals will be left in the dust unless there is a tie for third place.

If you’re confused as to who is actually able to compete for the newly announced virtual Tony Awards this fall, you’re not alone. The Tony Awards Administration Committee announced a new cut off date of February 19, 2020. That means that the 2019-2020 Broadway season was cut incredibly short.
Musical races are most heavily affected by the shortened season. “West Side Story” will have to wait until next year to compete as it opened after the February 19th eligibility cutoff date. Other scheduled revivals of “Caroline, or Change” and “Company” were postponed due to the Broadway shutdown. As such there will be no Revival of a Musical category this year. Other categories, like Best Musical and Director of a Musical, will likely see their number of nominees reduced to three due to a limited number of contenders.
Luckily, there are plenty of plays in contention since many of these non-musical outings premiere in the fall.

A recording of the late Nick Cordero’s one-man show will be released by Broadway Records on September 17, marking what would have been the actor’s 42nd birthday.
Broadway Records and Cordero’s wife Amanda Kloots announced the release today of Live Your Life, a live recording of the Broadway actor’s April 2019 show at New York’s Feinstein’s/54 Below cabaret.
“Nick would be absolutely thrilled to hear this news,” Kloots wrote on Instagram. “I’ve never seen my husband work so hard on something and be so nervous to perform. I was so proud of him and absolutely loved watching him onstage these two nights. He created this show from scratch, choosing songs to tell a story… his story. There’s some Broadway tunes with fun guest stars, some pop, standards, a little Latin and of course the encore is Live Your Life.”
