This month, ABC is betting big that viewers will tune into its ambitious three-part, six-episode limited series “Women of the Movement,” centering on 14-year-old Emmett Till’s brutal murder in 1955 that served as an important catalyst for the civil rights movement. With the ongoing investigation into the Capitol riot and reignited Critical Race Theory debates in the wake of Nikole Hannah-Jones’ “The 1619 Project,” the nation’s “wokeness” meter has arguably never been higher. But the question is whether a traditional broadcast network can succeed on a project first developed at HBO.
Consciously focusing on the role Black women played in the civil rights struggle, “Women of the Movement” centers on Till’s grieving mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, and her determination to bring her son’s mutilated body back to Chicago to “let the world see” (a phrase that inspires the title of ABC’s companion docuseries). We also follow the trial...

“Lovecraft Country” and “Underground” creator Misha Green and Jurnee Smollett are teaming up for a third project, taking Smollett’s “Birds of Prey” character Black Canary on a new adventure in her own standalone film for HBO Max.
Smollett confirmed the news on Twitter, writing: “Guess the Canary is out of the cage! So excited to finally embark on this adventure with my creative soul sis.” The pair are developing the project with DC Films president Walter Hamada and Galen Vaisman.
Last year, Green and Smollett teased their interest in teaming up for a Black Canary project, telling Variety that they used to compete in the Dceu fighting video game “Injustice 2,” with Green choosing to play as Black Canary (the alter ego of songstress Dinah Lance).
In the interview, Green said that Smollett landing the role in 2020 movie “Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn” (directed...

Scary times are over. HBO has opted not to make a second season of the Lovecraft Country TV series.

Currently every single one of Gold Derby’s Experts predicts “The Crown” will win Best Drama Series at the upcoming 2021 Emmys. Their predictions are no doubt influenced by the Netflix regal show’s domination of the winter awards season, including at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice and SAG Awards. But it’s not a done deal just yet. After all, Emmy voters rarely agree with what the precursors tell them do — that’s part of what makes them so challenging to predict. Sure, “The Crown” Season 4 was arguably its best yet, as the focus shifted to Emma Corrin as Princess Diana, Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles and Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher. But which other TV shows actually have a realistic chance of dethroning the odds-on front-runner? Let’s take a look at five more leading Best Drama Series Emmy contenders.

When “Stranger Things” won the Screen Actors Guild award for drama ensemble in 2017, it joined the 2006 winner “Lost” as the odd ones out in a sea of standard dramatic fare that typically wins this race. Their sci-fi story elements make them stick out among repeat winners like “ER,” “Mad Men” and “Downton Abbey.” This year we might be adding a third sci-fi-adjacent drama to the winners’ table if “Lovecraft Country” has anything to say about it.
In order to take the prize for Best TV Drama Ensemble, the “Lovecraft Country” cast will have to topple last year’s winner “The Crown,” which also stands above the other cast nominees with the most individual nominations (four). Also contending are two shows each with one prior nomination in the field: “Ozark” and “Better Call Saul,” both first nominated in 2019. The category is rounded out by another first season nominee, “Bridgerton,” which brings...

2021 Golden Globe Final Predictions:
Best TV Series (Drama)
Updated: Feb. 24, 2021
Awards Commentary:
Personally, we wouldn’t be mad to see a surprise victory by “Lovecraft Country” here. That show managed to explore the topics of racial injustice and violence, particularly in the Jim Crow era, through the lens of pulp horror — and to amazing results. But alas, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. didn’t nominate its stars, Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors, leaving us to wonder how committed they are to the HBO series. “The Mandalorian” was an Emmy victor several times over thanks to various craft categories, and “Ratched” comes from the awards bait of Mr. Ryan Murphy. But it likely comes down to two other Netflix dramas: “Ozark” and “The Crown.

Hello everyone! We’re back to give you the lowdown on another week of home media releases, and while we don’t have a ton of titles on tap, there are still a few key releases genre fans are going to want to pick up this Tuesday.
If you missed it during its run on HBO, you can finally catch up with the first season of Lovecraft Country, as Warner Bros. is bringing it home on both Blu-ray and DVD. Jay Baruchel’s Random Acts of Violence is also headed to both formats this week, or if you’re in the mood for something a little more old school, both The Unseen and Slithis are getting the Blu-ray treatment on Tuesday as well.
Other home media releases for February 16th include Bad Impulse, Butchers, The Leprechaun’s Game and Mask of Thorn.

Last year, “Succession” became the fourth drama series from HBO to win the top trophy at the Golden Globes, following “The Sopranos” (1999), “Six Feet Under” (2001) and “Boardwalk Empire” (2010). Missing from that list are some of the most heralded TV shows of all time, including “Game of Thrones” and “Westworld.” In this year’s Globe nominations, the paycaster was recognized for “Lovecraft Country,” the horror series based on writer H. P. Lovecraft‘s fictional stories. Will “Lovecraft Country” become HBO’s fifth Best Drama Series winner for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association?

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details about Sunday night’s season finale of Lovecraft Country.
Ever since Misha Green unleashed the wonder that is Lovecraft Country to the world in August, she, along with an all-star roster of writers and directors has immersed us in the Lccu: The Lovecraft Country Cinematic Universe. The series played out like an anthology of sorts that connect to create a 10-hour movie. Each episode is an origin story for each character — who could easily be a superhero — and tonight, we saw what is the series’ equivalent to Avengers: Endgame, with Jonathan Majors’ Atticus being Iron Man.
Directed by Nelson McCormick and written by Green (read Dominic Patten’s interview about the finale here), the episode was appropriately titled “Full Circle” and picks up immediately after episode 9. Diana (Jada Harris) has been cursed by the...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Lovecraft Country” Season 1, Episode 10, “Full Circle,” including the ending.]
Pinpointing the bloodiest, most batshit moment of any “Lovecraft Country” episode, let alone the finale’s, is an exercise only for those with stomachs of steel — likely literal steel, given the frank show we’re talking about. But with hands over our eyes, let’s look back at the finale’s final death for just a second: Diana (Jada Harris), wielding the furious power of her cousin’s Black shoggoth, walks up to the half-crushed body of Christina Braithwhite (Abbey Lee) and stares down at trapped villainess. Christina pleads with the teenage girl to save her; hoping, even expecting the young Black woman to help this once invulnerably privileged white lady — even though Christina just murdered Diana’s dear friend and family member, Tic (Jonathan Majors).

The following contains spoilers for Lovecraft Country episode 8.
We meet young Emmett Till in episode three of Lovecraft Country, “Holy Ghost.” Till, referred to as “Bobo” and portrayed by Rhyan Hill, is seen using a Ouija board in Leti’s basement the night of her housewarming, alongside Diana (Jada Harris), and Gil. The kids take turns asking questions, which the board answers, and when Bobo asks if he’ll have a good time on his trip, the board says no. It’s a brief moment in the story, but the meaning becomes much deeper once you realize that it’s the summer of 1955 and the trip in question is his visit to Mississippi to visit relatives.
Emmett Till was a real person and he was 14 years old when he travelled to the Mississippi Delta in late summer to visit family. On Aug. 24, 1955, Till, his cousins, and some friends went to Bryant Grocery in Money,...

After the traumatic events of "Whitey's on the Moon," including the death of Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) and the discovery that Atticus (Jonathan Majors) is actually a descendant of Sons of Adam founder Titus Braithwaite, it seems the Lovecraft Country crew are adjusting to life knowing there are monsters out there. In episode three, "Holy Ghost," Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) buys a derelict house on the (predominantly white) north side of town in the hopes of turning it into a boarding house. Racism isn't the only issue Letitia seems to be dealing with in the fixer-upper; there's something supernatural at work. The Lovecraft Country TV series is based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff. Since it's based on a book, it seems like the show will have a natural conclusion by the end of the 10 episodes. But, if there's enough interest, could Lovecraft Country end up being renewed for a second season anyway? Stay tuned.

This Lovecraft Country review contains spoilers.
Lovecraft Country Season 1, Episode 1
We’re introduced to Atticus “Tic” Freeman (Jonathan Majors) in a dream sequence. What begins as a straightforward black and white scene of Tic in the trenches morphs into a colorful panorama of the fantastical, a smorgasbord of sci-fi hors d’oeuvres. Overhead, flying saucers hover, while creatures of unknown origin fly about the sky. A red woman (Jamie Chung) descends from a spaceship, and alerts our hero to the imminent threat of a rising Cthulhu. Before the Elder God can raise hell, Jackie Robinson smashes it to shit with a single swing of his bat. Tic abruptly awakens.
In real life, Tic is on the back of a greyhound. As the bus crosses yet another bridge named after a dead racist, Tic flips the bridge the bird, a final fuck you to the Jim Crow South. Unfortunately, the bus breaks down.

The premiere of HBO’s new sci-fi period drama, Lovecraft Country, adds a disturbing new dimension to the phrase “sundown town.”
The term traditionally has referred to all-white communities where Blacks are not safe — and in many cases, outright banned — after dark. Lovecraft Country‘s protagonist, Atticus Freeman (played by When We Rise‘s Jonathan Majors) drives through several of them in the HBO drama’s first episode, enduring inhumane taunts and outright attempts on his life in the process.

Atticus “Tic” Freeman, the young Korean War veteran hero of HBO’s fantastic — in every sense of the word — new drama Lovecraft Country, has a weakness for pulp stories. As he puts it, “I love that the heroes get to go on adventures in other worlds, defy insurmountable odds, defeat the monster, save the day.” But he’s also painfully aware that these tales rarely have room for someone who looks like him. His favorite author, the 1920s horror stylist H.P. Lovecraft, was also a vile bigot who once wrote...
