The next installment in Netflix's Extraction franchise just received a major update from Joe Russo. The fan-favorite filmmaker, one half of the Russo Brothers, revealed at New York Comic Con 2024 when Extraction 3 will begin shooting.

Speaking with Collider at Nycc to promote his upcoming Netflix sci-fi adventure movie, The Electric State, Russo shared that cameras would finally begin rolling on Extraction 3 next year. "We're in the middle of working on that story right now. Hard at work. Filmmaker Sam Hargrave knew he would have to up the ante when it came to filming Netflix’s action sequel “Extraction 2.” The first film, which came out in 2020, contained a 12-minute sequence that included a car chase, gun battles, knife battles and plenty of explosions.

The black-ops mercenary played by Chris Hemsworth was the hero of 2020’s Extraction, one of Netflix’s most watched movies ever. So it’s hardly a surprise that the tough-as-nails, macho character returns in the unimaginatively titled Extraction 2, reuniting the Thor actor with director Sam Hargrave and screenwriter Joe Russo (co-director with brother Anthony on four MCU entries, including two Avengers flicks) for another wildly over-the-top adventure based on Andre Parks’ graphic novel Ciudad.

Suffice it to say that if you enjoyed Extraction, you’ll have a fine time with this one, which, in typical franchise fashion, busts its butt attempting to outdo its predecessor. And it does, most notably in a “oner” action sequence designed to appear as if it were filmed in a single take that lasts 21 minutes, or nearly twice as long...

When we last left “Extraction” hero Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) he was, well, he was dead. He’d been beaten, shot multiple times, and tossed into a river, where he was presumably (again) dead. And yet…in the final moments of the Sam Hargrave-directed feature, a shadowy figure emerged, looking a bit like Tyler, albeit very much not dead, to watch over his young charge so many months after his apparent death. The much-awaited trailer for the action thriller ‘Extraction 2’ is out. Scheduled for streaming on Netflix from June 16, the Chris Hemsworth-starrer is being helmed by stuntman-turned-filmmaker Sam Hargravere, who’s wokring alongside the hitmakers Joe and Anthony Russo.

The sequel stars Chris Hemsworth, Golshifteh Farahani, Daniel Bernhardt and Tinatin Dalakishvili.

In the first instalment released in 2020, and which also starred Randeep Hooda, Tyler Rake, the Australian black market mercenary played by Hemsworth, had to extract a boy safely from India.

This time he must rescue the family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held.

The screenplay, written by Joe Russo, is based on the graphic novel ‘Ciudad’.

If the first film introduced audiences to Rake as a seasoned action hero, Hargrave says the sequel aims to show how he got that way, and the toll it has taken on him and those close to him.

As the release date for “Extraction 2” gets closer, Netflix has unveiled a brand new trailer for the action sequel.

In previously released trailers, it’s understood that Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) has “fought his way back” after being “clinically dead nine months ago” following the events of the original 2020 action hit.

Now, the main trailer questions why — “You just have to find out why,” Nik Kahn (Golshifteh Farahani) tells Tyler. Khan is a Private Military Contractor and ally of Rake.

All this after being declared clinically dead following the events at the end of the first Extraction.

Hemsworth described this official trailer on social media, saying, “Here you go. Extraction 2 trailer smacking you right between the eyes.” Hemsworth also confirmed the action thriller includes a single shot that clocks in at 21 minutes.

Filmmaker Sam Hargrave is back after making his directorial debut with the original “Extraction” in 2020. Once again, he brings his stunt coordinator expertise after working on “Avengers: Endgame,” “Deadpool 2,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Suicide Squad,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Atomic Blonde” and “The Accountant.” On the “Avengers” and “Civil War” movies, he collaborated with the Russo brothers, who produced the two “Extraction” movies.
