More than three years after his death, Aaron Hernandez's memory lives on in his only child. Mona Scott-Young had been in the music business as a manager for years when opportunity knocked in the form of a reality TV show about the significant others of hip hop stars.
That was a decade ago. The durable VH1 franchise “Love & Hip Hop” is now the cornerstone of Scott-Young’s Monami Entertainment banner, which has ventured into everything from cosmetics and wine to physical production and post-production assets.
On the latest episode of Variety podcast “Strictly Business,” Monami CEO Scott-Young discusses the company’s growth and the building blocks in her professional life that led her to launch Monami in 2008 after leaving the top-tier music management firm Violator. She had wanted to break into television, but hadn’t found the right avenue until the concept for “Love & Hip Hop” came to her from a former protege, manager-producer Yandy Smith, who would later appear on the show.

The story of Aaron Hernandez, the New England Patriots star turned convicted murderer, always comes down to why.
Why would Hernandez kill his friend Odin Lloyd, when he was on top of the world after signing a $40 million contract extension with the Patriots? By what means did he avoid accountability for violent outbursts dating back to his college days? How could a person described at times as fun-loving, sensitive and vulnerable flip to homicidal aggression?
Possible answers to those questions emerge in the Netflix documentary series Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez, directed by Geno McDermott. The series, told in three parts, is now in contention for Emmy nominations.
“I think he was living a double life,” McDermott says of Hernandez. “He was able to, during the day, be an amazing athlete, amazing football player. He was able to fold into the Patriots organization. Then at night he was...

Comcast and NBCUniversal are pushing Peacock out of the nest starting Wednesday, April 15, promising to unfurl a rich plume of 15,000-plus hours of streaming content, first for the cable giant’s own TV and internet customers.
Peacock is then slated to be available across the U.S. on July 15 — while NBCU is mulling the possibility of moving that up sooner — in various three tiers across mobile, web and connected-tv devices: paid with ads ($4.99 monthly); paid with no ads ($9.99 monthly); and completely free with ads with a truncated content lineup. With the national launch, Comcast (and Cox) subscribers also will have the option to get an ad-free version of the service for an additional $5 per month.
So what’s on the menu? Peacock will include live and on-demand content across current and past TV shows, movies, news, and late night programming, with some live sports once they resume post-pandemic. Most of...

It’s always an honor to be one of the titles that premiere on opening night at the Sundance Film Festival, and this year there were eight. Three are available for acquisition: Next selection “Summertime,” Midnight’s “Bad Hair,” and World documentary “The Painter and the Thief” The other five were already spoken for: Music Box had “The Perfect Candidate,” while Netflix had two documentaries and a feature, and Showtime offered the first four episodes of a docuseries. There’s the Barack and Michelle Obama executive-produced “Crip Camp,” the Taylor Swift documentary “Miss Americana” and the French-language “Cuties,” along with Showtime’s “Love Fraud.” And with that outsized presence of what once seemed anomalous — TV and streamers, at Sundance! — there’s a measure of reckoning for the festival long defined as a marketplace for theatrical distributors to pick up indie breakouts and low-budget hidden gems.
Sundance itself is well aware of the potential discrepancy.

The year just started, and Netflix is already feeding our true crime obsession with the three-part series Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez. The show explores NFL player Aaron Hernandez's shocking downfall as he went from playing for the New England Patriots to being convicted of killing his friend Odin Lloyd in 2013. As the Netflix series highlights, the NFL star's case is intrinsically linked to that of his older cousin - but what happened to Tanya Singleton? Like Hernandez, who died by suicide in his prison cell on April 19, 2017, Singleton's story also ended in tragedy.
After Hernandez's father died when he was in high school, the young athlete bonded with his cousin. Soon, Singleton, who was older than him, began acting as a maternal figure to the teen, and he even moved into her home for a time. After Hernandez was arrested for Lloyd's murder, his family members,...

Aaron Hernandez's suicide in 2017 meant that the disgraced former football star's short life was over, but it did not mark the end of his story. The day might be near when it will be news if an upcoming TV series doesn’t have a podcast to go along with it. For now, add Nat Geo’s “The Hot Zone” to the growing list of series enlisting some audio companionship. The story, which tells of Lt. Col. Nancy Jaax’s (Julianna Margulies) efforts to contain the Ebola virus after its first appearance on American soil, also will be addressed in “American Epidemics,” a Wondery audio series produced in conjunction with the TV show.
Lindsay Graham, the podcast host behind “American History Tellers” and the presidential-themed fiction series “Terms” and “1865,” will head up this new series, which will span three episodes. The second episode of “American Epidemics” will focus on the production of “The Hot Zone,” featuring interviews with Margulies and showrunners Kelly Sounders and Brian Peterson.
“American Epidemics” premieres May 10, with new episodes debuting every Friday.

When disgraced football player Aaron Hernandez took his life in his jail cell two years ago, it seemed as though the tragic end to his short short life would be the end of his story. And in a way, it was. A life once filled with promise that had turned unspeakably violent was now over. And it seemed as though the world would just move on. But to think that is to forget all those left to pick up the pieces in the wake of his suicide, both his family and the families of those whose lives were lost in the crimes the onetime NFL star had been accused of. And so, in that way, the story might never really be over. It certainly isn't yet. When Hernandez was found in his cell at Souza-Baranowski Correctional...

Podcast company Wondery is stepping up its television activities following the success of Dirty John and is in talks with high-level showrunners to adapt its latest hit Over My Dead Body.
The company, which was set up by former Fox International Channels boss Hernan Lopez, is developing a number of its serialized podcast series for the small screen, including dark medical drama Dr Death, Business Wars and Gladiator, the story of ex-New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez.

Update, 7:23 Am: Harvey Weinstein officially has a new defense team today, according to the New York Supreme Court.
“Welcome to the New York State Supreme Court,” Justice James Burke told attorneys Ronald Sullivan Jose Baez and Duncan Levin this morning in a hearing in lower Manhattan with the disgraced producer in attendance. Along with Pam Mackey, the Harvard professor, his long time Florida-based associate and Levin were formally approved by the court to take over Weinstein’s counsel from the now exited Ben Brafman.
While Brafman was there, Denver-based Mackey did not join Weinstein, Sullivan, Baez and Levin at the hearing Friday.
No word yet if the change in lawyers and probably legal tactics will lead to a delay in the May start of Weinstein’s criminal trial. The rape charges against the Sundance Film Festival regular could see Weinstein behind bars for life if found guilty on indictments...

Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has officially axed Ben Brafman as his lawyer ahead of his sexual assault trial, and assembled a new defense team headed by high-powered attorney Jose Baez. Baez is best known for his work on several high-profile murder cases, representing Casey Anthony, who was acquitted of killing her two-year-old daughter in 2011, and former NFL star Aaron Hernandez, who was found not guilty of a double homicide in 2017.
More recently, however, Baez represented actress Rose McGowan in a drug possession case resolved last year with a no contest plea.

Heidi Fay Taylor died after enduring more than five dozen stab wounds and one fatal shot to the head. Now, the teenage boy convicted of murdering her in their rural Ohio home claims he's innocent. "I am so scared. I didn't want to kill her," Donovan Nicholas, then 14, told an emergency dispatcher on April 6, 2017. Nicholas blamed an alternate personality — one modeled after the fictional horror character "Jeff the Killer" — on the slaying. "Before we distinctly split, I liked Jeff the Killer, I was obsessed with Jeff the Killer," he told Judge Nick Selvaggio on Tuesday. "Jeff became a problem when he started doing things I didn't want him to do — destroying my room, stabbing walls." Taylor, 40, wasn't the teen's biological mother but had been his father's longtime, live-in girlfriend. He called her "mom." "She was a mother figure in my life ... I'll always love her for that," Nicholas said. "But...
