A Year Later, No One Can Get Over the Kendrick and Drake Beef
Image
One year ago this week, Kendrick Lamar and Drake engaged in a monumental rapid-fire rap beef, trading scathing diss songs like “Euphoria” and “Family Matters” back-to-back, sometimes in a matter of minutes. On the night of May 3, fans couldn’t even absorb the potency of Drake’s “Family Matters” before Lamar dropped the even more scathing “Meet the Grahams” 24 minutes later. The two rap icons had been in a cold war for years, but social media started buzzing once their subliminals turned into headline-worthy accusations of assault, infidelity, and hidden children.

Courtroom Magician Joe Tacopina Saved A$AP Rocky’s Life — Now Diddy’s Knocking on his Door
Image
On the morning of April 22, 2022, Rakim Mayers, the 33-year-old Harlem rapper better known as A$AP Rocky, returned to Los Angeles from a long vacation with his superstar girlfriend, Rihanna, in her home country of Barbados. After stepping off the private jet at Lax, Mayers was arrested by LAPD officers and thrown in jail. He was charged with two felony counts of assault for allegedly firing two shots that grazed the knuckles of Terrell Ephron, a former member of Mayers’ hip-hop collective A$AP Mob who went by A$AP Relli, during a scuffle at a West Hollywood parking garage the previous November. Out on bail, Mayers rejected a plea deal to serve just six months in prison, opting instead to fight the charges in court. Faced with a career-ending, life-shattering maximum sentence of 24 years, Mayers turned to a high-profile hometown lawyer known for successfully defending rappers and entertainers, including Michael Jackson,...

The “Levels” rapper was quick to reject the narrative, sharing a screenshot of the article and laughing off the allegation in a post.

Now, after being diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and placed under guardianship, Williams is fighting back—this time to regain control of her legal representation.

Wendy Williams Challenges Her Guardianship

Williams has been under a strict conservatorship since 2022, a year before her devastating diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia and dementia.

Sabrina Morrissey, her court-appointed guardian, has had full control over her finances and well-being. However, Williams has made it clear that she no longer trusts the system that has been managing her life.

Currently, she is represented by guardianship attorney Sadatu Salami, but she is pushing to add another lawyer to her case. Before this can happen, a Lincoln hearing will determine if Williams is mentally capable of making such a decision.

Drake’s Past Feud With a Rapper Mimicked Kendrick Lamar Drama Except He Was on the Winning Side
Image
Drake’s feud with Kendrick Lamar has been making the headlines throughout this past year. However, it’s definitely not his first time beefing with another rapper. From Pusha T, Ludacris, and Chris Brown, to Megan Thee Stallion and more, he has squared up to many fellow rappers over the years.

Although he has since made up with many of them, he has also taken liberties to create new ones in the meantime. One among his many feuds, though, sort of followed a similar pattern to the one he had with Kendrick Lamar.

With corresponding blow after blow, the two heat up the rap circles for a while. Interestingly, though, the one to emerge victorious at that time was Drake.

The night marked not just a celebration of his music, but a reminder of his unmatched ability to bridge artistry, commercial success and cultural commentary.

As Lamar walked to the stage to accept his record of the year Grammy for “Not Like Us,” a legion of audience members, including Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, danced and sang along to some of the song’s most incendiary lyrics as they blasted triumphantly from the house speakers. For however controversial the song may be to some, it’s worth noting Kendrick didn’t make “A minorrrrr” into a refrain until after Drake levied...

It’s a Shame Howard University Didn’t Revoke Bill Cosby’s Degree After Severing All Ties With Alumnus P. Diddy

While the university was quick to distance itself from Diddy, a glaring inconsistency lingers: Bill Cosby, who was convicted of s*xual assault in 2018, still holds an honorary degree from Howard. Rap Mogul Sean Combs Arrested For Sex Trafficking & Kidnapping After New Federal Indictment
Image
On Monday night, Homeland Security arrested Sean Combs in the lobby of the Hyatt Park Hotel in Manhattan. The music mogul was unsurprised by the arrest and had returned to New York in full cooperation with the authorities.

Combs’ defense lawyer Marc Agnifilo said, “We are disappointed with the decision to pursue what we believe is an unjust prosecution.” His arrest was reportedly meant to occur on Tuesday, but due to unknown circumstances, it came earlier.

A grand jury indictment brought by the Justice Department’s New York Southern District office prompted the arrest, following months of an ongoing investigation into Combs and his enterprises, including Bad Boy Records and Revolt TV & Media.

How the Kendrick-Drake Beef Became a Viral Video Game
Image
“Wop, wop, wop, wop, wop.” Those five words are among the most memorable of all the vicious punches thrown by Kendrick Lamar in his Drake diss track “Not Like Us” — and now, they have inspired a video game. Not Like Us: The Game is a web-based whack-a-mole clone based on the imagery from the song’s music video, in which, accompanying those very words, Kendrick beats an owl piñata until its candy innards pour out.

But to the game’s designer, Richie Branson (real name Marcus Brown II), the game...

The Fyre Fest Fraudster Is Connecting Trump With Rappers
Image
On June 14, entrepreneur and infamous Fyre Fest organizer Billy McFarland uploaded a photo of himself alongside former president and presumptive 2024 Republican nominee Donald Trump to Instagram. His caption read, “Pres’ birthday featuring your new cabinet.” While that’s not likely to happen, McFarland has played a role in connecting Trump with rappers throughout his campaign — as the Republican seeks to court Black voters.

A source close to Detroit rapper Icewear Vezzo tells Rolling Stone that McFarland reached out to the rapper’s camp and connected him with Trump ahead of...

Director Michael John Warren On Capturing The Rise, Fall And Rebirth Of The Cultural Revolution In ‘Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza’
Image
Some ideas are outlandish enough to change everything. This is especially the case for one of the world’s most famous and culturally impactful musical festivals, Lollapalooza, birthed in 1991 as a farewell for Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell. The festival quickly became a traveling showcase of ragtag bands and artists ranging from alt-rock, punk, metal and hip-hop that managed to define a generation steeped in radical counterculture.

Director Michael John Warren

Paramount+’s three-part documentary, Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza, takes an in-depth look at the festival’s journey through three decades. Through a prime interview with Farrell, archival footage and subsequent interviews with members from Nine Inch Nails, Living Color, L7, Metallica, Ice-t and other legendary musical pioneers, the documentary highlights how Lollapalooza aimed to push the boundaries of the alternative music scene while also battling the challenges of succumbing to the pressures of fame only to evolve into what it is today,...

Drake has always been a magnet for attention. His strange journey has taken him from teen fame on Degrassi to blockbuster rap stardom. Yet he’s also the Drake the pop icon, the certified loverboy who sings emo ballads like the 2015 classic “Hotline Bling.”

The Number One Song in the Country Is a Diss Track. Is That a Good Thing?
Image
This week, the Number One song in America is a diss track. Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” debuted at the top of the charts, to the surprise of no one who’s seen the track go viral since its release earlier this month. The song is buoyed by a catchy DJ Mustard beat and a slew of unforgettably delivered lyrics by Kendrick — even if the lines are vulgar barbs toward his rival Drake.

What does the record’s success mean? For one, it highlights how desensitized we are as a music-listening public.

Kendrick Lamar and Drake Trade Diss Tracks as Rap War Rages On
Image
Kendrick Lamar and Drake traded diss tracks Friday night in the latest salvos in the rapper’s weeks-long lyrical feud.

Following a week that saw Lamar drop both the scathing “Euphoria” and “6:16 in LA,” Drake finally responded Friday with “Family Matters,” which alleges infidelity in Lamar’s relationship. On the seven-minute track, Drake also hits back at some of the other rappers — Metro Boomin, Rick Ross, Future, A$AP Rocky, the Weeknd and more — that have provoked him lately:

“We could’ve left the kids out of this, don’t blame me,...

Toomaj Salehi, a dissident Iranian rapper, was sentenced to death earlier this week for releasing music critical of the government and in support of the 2022 protests in Iran.

Drake Mostly Made Himself Look Bad on His Latest Diss

The long-awaited showdown between Kendrick Lamar and Drake has been bogged down by Instagram Story trolling, X bots, and artificial intelligence. While the rap world awaits Kendrick’s response to Drake, we’ve also been made to ponder technology’s role in societal decline. When the rap Gods declared “There are no rules in rap beef,” they likely weren’t imagining stan wars with hordes of X bot accounts feverishly posting sophomoric disses like “Daycares worldwide are being told to stay on high alert for Kendrick Lamar.”
