‘Shot in the Dark’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Kristoffer McMillan, Jacqueline Toboni, Brandon Sklenar, Kelley Mack, Christine Donlon, Austin Hebert, Will Harris, Lindsay Ames, Rhomeyn Johnson | Written by Kristoffer McMillan, Keene McRae, Lane Thomas | Directed by Keene McRae

I feel like the horror genre has had a recent surge in movies that seem to centre on a certain theme or story, say a couples struggling relationship and then almost adding on anything horror-related after, or at least that’s how it seems. This is not necessarily a new or a bad thing but in the movies I have watched recently it does seem to be happening more than before.

Shot in the Dark focuses on a guy, William (Kristoffer McMillan), who is still struggling with something that happened in his life two years previous. Now suicidal, his career is failing and he has moved to his home town in the hope that old friends and familiar surroundings...

Keene McRae
Shot in the Dark review – a disturbingly realistic exercise in ultraviolence
Keene McRae
Despite its precision film-making and a standout performance from Kristoffer McMillan, this bloody thriller is a grisly watch

This gory, lowish-budget thriller is quite competently made on a technical level, with umbral cinematography that is choreographed down to the millimetre along with the flash-cut-heavy editing and shrieky score and sound design. But it is not exactly a fun watch unless you really like lots of violence and jumbled-timeline puzzle stories. It feels like a calling card effort for the team that made it, which includes the co-writer and director, Keene McRae, making his first feature here as well as taking a supporting role, and the actors Kristoffer McMillan and Lane Thomas, who co-wrote the script with McRae and took on assorted other duties off camera. Good luck to them, because they certainly have skills, if a less assured touch with character building.

McMillan plays William, a writer whom we first...

Haunting First Trailer for Serial Killer Horror Thriller 'Shot in the Dark'
Image
"Do you feel like someone has been in the house?" ShineHouse has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Shot in the Dark, from director / actor Keene McRae making his feature directorial debut. This first premiered at a festival in the UK last year, and it played at the Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival earlier this year. Lawton, Nevada’s once successful writer—now small town pariah—William Langston, fights for his life as the final victim of a serial killer. Over the course of one day, William is captured and tortured. The pain launches him into the past where he is forced to confront his unresolved trauma of 'love lost' and the actions that led him into this trap. The film stars Kristoffer McMillan, Christine Donlon, Kelley Mack, Keene McRae, Jacqueline Toboni, Austin Hébert, and Brandon Sklenar. Yeah it looks very creepy with a more distinct style than most serial killer horrors,...

‘Animal Among Us’ Review
Stars: Larisa Oleynik, Erin Daniels, Heather Tom, Christine Donlon, Christian Oliver, Jasmine Dustin, Jonathan Murphy, Don Frye, Eric Tiede, Whitney Davis | Written by Jonathan Murphy | Directed by John Woodruff

Fifteen years ago, two teenage girls were murdered at Merrymaker Campgrounds. The case was filed as an animal attack, the camp was condemned, and the killer never found. Now, years later Poppy (Christine Donlon) and Anita Bishop (Larisa Oleynik) get set to re-open their parent’s camp. And they even invite Roland Baumgarner (Christian Oliver), the novelist who made his name by penning a bestseller about the case, to the opening.

Billed as yet another Bigfoot/sasquatch movie, Animal Among Us is actually anything but. It is in fact a melding of genre tropes: monster movie, cabin in the woods film, survival horror, dramatic thriller, all rolled into one – sadly – dull genre film saved only by a surprising performance by former Alex Mack Larisa Oleynik.

Chris Tucker and Ice Cube in Todo en un viernes (1995)
Animal Among Us Review: A Different Approach to Sasquatch Horror
Chris Tucker and Ice Cube in Todo en un viernes (1995)
Described as Friday the 13th meets Dog Soldiers, Uncork'd Entertainment's Animal Among Us might be the most bizarre sasquatch-horror movie you'll ever see. Directed by John Woodruff using a screenplay by Jonathan Murphy, Animal Among Us is filled with nods to classic horror movies from the '70s and '80s. This makes watching the movie a fun experience for old school horror fans, but as it's not a straight-up gorefest like some of those classic slasher films. To be clear, while it contains elements of slasher movies and Bigfoot horror, Animal Among Us is not really either of those types of movies, as it tells an intriguing story without an abundance of blood.

Christian Oliver (Sense8) stars in Animal Among Us as Roland Baumgarner, an author who penned a book called The Merrymaker Murderer. The best-selling book was about the actual murders of two young girls fifteen years...

Richard Kind in First Trailer for 'Auggie' Film About an Ar Companion
"You have a new perspective." Samuel Goldwyn Films has debuted an official trailer for an odd indie film titled Auggie, the feature directorial debut of English actor / filmmaker Matt Kane. This premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival this year, and also played at the Newport Beach, Greenwich, and Provincetown Film Festivals. From the looks of it, this seems like another kooky film much like Lars and the Real Girl about a man who falls in love with a fake woman. In Auggie, Richard Kind plays Felix Greystone, who is forced into early retirement and falls in love with an augmented reality companion, damaging his relationship with his wife and daughter. The cast includes Christen Harper as Auggie, plus Larisa Oleynik, Christine Donlon, Susan Blackwell, Steven M. Robertson, and James C. Victor. This seems way more sad and depressing than expected, but it's supposed to be a cautionary tale about technology and our addiction to it.
