Half a million Duolingo users are currently learning High Valyrian. But how do you make a language out of nothing? The linguists behind top fantasy TV shows and films explain
If a language offers clues to the culture of its speakers, then the experience of learning Game of Thrones’s High Valyrian on Duolingo conjures visions of a bustling historic civilisation in which owls stalk the skies, magic abounds, and the spectre of death forever haunts the imaginations of the living. You learn to say “The woman is sweating” before that most basic greeting, “Hello”. An incongruously cheerful cartoon asks you to translate “All men must die, goodbye.” And, of course: “Ñuhyz zaldrīzesse gevī issi.” (“My dragons are beautiful!”).
Described in George Rr Martin’s books as the language of the dragon-taming rulers of a once-great empire, Old Valyria has been compared to the Roman Republic, and High Valyrian to classical Latin.

Denis Villeneuve is sparing no expense when it comes to creating a fully-realized world for his big, star-studded Dune movie. In order to create the many otherworldly dialects in the Frank Herbert adaptation, David J. We speak with David J. Peterson, the man behind Game of Thrones' many languages, about Season 8 and a new online Valyrian course.
Don't believe the mainstream Westerosi media's lies: there is a word for "thank you" in Dothraki. According to David J. Peterson, the man who created Dothraki, High Valyrian, and a whole host of other languages for HBO's Game of Thrones, saying "san athchomari" is how one might thank someone in the tongue of the Horse Lords for their generous gift of three dragon eggs.
"[It was written] before the line about the language not having a word for 'thank you' was added to the pilot," David J. Peterson says. Peterson is a conlanger (creator of languages) and the founder of the Language Creation Society. The name David J. Peterson probably does not ring a bell for most people, but he’s the connective tissue between “Game of Thrones” and Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming “Dune.” Peterson is a linguist and language consultant who has spent the last several years perfecting the art of the Dothraki and Valyrian dialects on “Thrones,” while also advising on fictional languages heard in “Doctor Strange,” “Warcraft,” “The 100,” “Bright,” and “Penny Dreadful.” Peterson recently confirmed to io9 his latest gig is working on languages for “Dune,” although the project is under so much secrecy, admitting his involvement is just about the only thing he can say right now.
“I asked [the studio before the interview], especially because it seemed like every day you’re jumping on Twitter and, ‘Oh, this person is working on Dune.’ I’m like, ‘Can I say I’m working on Dune?’” Peterson said. “They said, ‘Yeah you can say you’re working on Dune,...

Face Off is one of the most creative reality shows on television. I caught last week’s episode where they had to come up with make-ups for a long-lost culture based on some artifacts and a made-up language that was created by guest judge David Peterson – the man who created the “Dothraki” language for Game of Thrones. A show like Face Off reminds viewers of just how work goes into the shows and movies we watch, and in ways we don’t always think about. For instance, yes, someone had to make up that language! Who’s left: Anna Cali, Johnny Leftwich, Kaleb Lewis, Katie Kinney, Melissa Ebbe, Mel Licata,

"Game of Thrones" only recently ended Season 5 and they are just starting Season 6, so there was no footage to show at Comic-Con and no major spoilers shared at the panel. However, after the Comic-Con panel, HBO's Making Game of Thrones asked several cast members two questions: 1) What GoT scene would they have loved to have been in, and 2) What one-word tease would they give for Season 6, based off the newly delivered scripts? Read the full story for the scene answers, but we're all about Season 6 right now so we wanted whatever hints they could share from the scripts.
It's interesting to learn who hadn't even read the pages by that point. Hannah Murray (Gilly) said she hadn't received her scripts yet. "Mystery, would be a good word. Jack Gleeson, Who Plays Joffrey On 'Game Of Thrones,' Criticizes Celebrity Culture In Speech [Video]
Jack Gleeson, star of Game of Thrones, critiqued celebrity culture at an Oxford Union event, calling the idolization of celebrities a harmful trend in modern society.
Jack Gleeson Speaks At The Oxford Union
Gleeson, 21, who stars as the evil King Joffery Bartheon in HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones, was invited to appear at the Oxford Union, a debating society that invites famous speakers to Oxford. Gleeson, who studies theology and philosophy at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, when not acting, took the opportunity to kick off the Q&A session with some personal remarks on the nature of fame.
Gleeson has previously stated his flirtation with the idea of quitting acting after Game of Thrones. After attending college, doing charity work and starting his own theater company in Ireland, Gleeson says he is not sure acting, at least in such high profile material as Game of Thrones, is for him.

Anyone who watches "Game of Thrones" is familiar with the guttural and foreign-sounding Dothraki language. But did you know that this is a "real" language, containing a vocabulary of about 3700 words?
Based on this information, Vulture got David J. Peterson, the language's creator, to translate a bunch of pop-culture phrases into Daenerys Targaryen's adopted tongue.
The list of phrases we learn in the article is limited but rather entertaining. You can even listen to how each silly sentence sounds in the original article. To get you started, however, here are the translations.
First up, we have Taylor Swift's famous song title and song refrain.

Next, here is Michael Scott's catchphrase from "The Office."
"That's what she said."

A couple of weeks ago, we talked to the creator of the full Dothraki language for HBO's Game of Thrones, David J. Peterson, and it got us wondering about its practical applications. We know how effective Dothraki is when barking at someone in a medieval fantasyland; it sets the perfect tone for something like, "I will rape their women, take their children as slaves, and bring their broken gods back to Vaes Dothrak!" (Anha aqorisok chiories mori, vazzafrok yal mori, ma afichak vojjor samva Vaesaan Dothrak!) But how does it work when you're trying to quote pop culture? We issued Peterson a challenge: Translate eight famous catchphrases to see how they sound in Dothraki. Turns out "That's what she said" is a lot more menacing, and "I am the one who knocks" sounds a lot nerdier! See the translations of these and more, with audio files by Peterson to help...

Bad news, Game of Thrones fans: You are mispronouncing Daenerys’s honorific, Khaleesi. But don’t feel bad. On the HBO show, her smitten man-servant Jorah has been saying it incorrectly as well; the more accurate pronunciation should be “Khah-lay-see,” not “ka-lee-see.” That’s according to David J. Peterson, the language creator responsible for all of the Dothraki and Valyrian dialogue spoken on the show, and he’s driven mad every time he hears it. “Ugh. God. That’s not how it’s supposed to sound,” said Peterson. “The vowel change bugs me.” As the architect of the language’s grammar and pronunciation rules, he’s the only one who can correct it with authority, but he lost the battle to correct the pronunciation on the show early on. “The producers decided they liked the other way better. They probably thought most people were pronouncing it that way anyway, which is true.

When you talk about the success of a TV show, a strong indicating factor is usually the number of seasons it aired for. Old heavyweights like Seinfeld and Friends ran for 9 and 10 ten seasons respectively. More recently we’ve had long runners in Lost (6) and Friday Night Lights (5), there’s even a fair amount of premium cable shows that have had substantial airtime; The Sopranos (6.5), Weeds (7), and Mad Men (4), to name just a few. Rarely do you get a show that carries the same prestige having only been around for 1 season!
This seems to be the case with HBO’s run away hit Game of Thrones, which was the most viewed show on Sky Atlantic last year. HBO even green lit the second season only hours after the first had premiered. Co-President Richard Plepler said, “We told George (R.R. Martin) we’d go as long as he kept writing.

After last week's Game of Thrones stayed firmly in Westeros, Sunday's episode (airing at 9/8c on HBO) returns to the land of the Dothraki, those nomadic warriors across the Narrow Sea who value a good piece of horseflesh for both riding and eating.
But we're not here to discuss Dothraki livestock recipes, as delicious as they may be. Instead, we shall delve into their language, a liquid-sounding tongue inspired by the limited Dothraki vocabulary, as seen in George R.R.
