As Sam Bankman-Fried stands trial for fraud after the 2022 high-profile collapse of his cryptocurrency exchange Ftx, Anthony Scaramucci is sharing the story of how he got into business with the young billionaire.
In Tales From The Crypto: The Rise and Fall of Ftx, a newly launched podcast from Audio Up, the financier who became a household name during a brief stint as communications director for former president Donald Tump tells his story warts and all. His company, SkyBridge Capitol, sold a one-third stake to Sbf’s Ftx Ventures in 2022 — not long before the house of cards collapsed. The podcast dropped its first two episodes on Oct. 9 and will roll out weekly on Mondays.
Instead of picking up when the two met a few years ago, the story starts with Scaramucci’s background as a middle-class kid from Long Island, explaining how he landed at Goldman Sachs after graduating from Harvard Law School...

Movies about the financial markets inevitably have the same problem. It simply isn’t that visually compelling watching people stare at their computers or phones and muttering expletives. Adam McKay’s The Big Short managed to avoid the pitfall thanks to its truly memorable characters and such stylistic flourishes as having Margot Robbie explain complicated financial concepts directly to the camera while lounging in a bathtub.
Craig Gillespie’s Dumb Money, about the 2021 GameStop stock phenomenon fueled by individual investors driven by social media, doesn’t prove quite as successful. Nonetheless, the film receiving its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival proves entertaining enough, thanks to its canny screenplay relating the story as a Frank Capra-style battle between the little people and the rich bigwigs hoisted by their own petards, and the fun performances by a terrific ensemble.

The future is either an incredibly exciting place where decentralized ledgers bring about change rapidly or a hellish landscape where organized groups can exploit vulnerabilities in rigged systems. Fourteen years ago, director Ondi Timoner’s We Live in Public predicted the toxic hellscape some social media platforms have become, documenting Josh Harris’ Y2K era project “Quiet.” In a doomsday-style bunker, Harris simulated a societal breakdown in 30 days that has taken Facebook nearly twenty years to achieve. The director’s latest documentary The New Americans: Gaming a Revolution applies some of the same insights as GameStop: Rise of the Players as it explores the relationship between gaming, crypto, mediated mobilizations, and the stock market.
Timoner includes a wide range of personalities to tell this story, including the experts that misread just how volatile a market can be when retail investors have the time and the money to learn how to play the game.

Ondi Timoner’s documentary The New Americans: Gaming a Revolution surely doesn’t lack for ambition.
In a jam-packed 102 minutes, The New Americans aims to explain a string of recent Internet-fueled financial misadventures; to somewhat update the meditations on Internet-connected communities and online social anxiety that were part of her acclaimed 2009 film We Live in Public; and to link those things to a toxicity that culminated in the chaos of January 6, 2021.
The New Americans takes a meme-ified approach to understanding the meme-ified intersection of online culture, the financial sector and the rise of different strains of extremism. But like a Xerox of a Xerox of a Xerox, the relationship between the documentary and the information it’s attempting to elucidate becomes a blur.
The film wants to separate the signal from the noise in the public discourse, but it’s so enamored with the sensory madness that it just becomes more cacophony.

Wanna feel old? Contrary to popular depictions of millennial youth as being disenfranchised, politically feckless and bone idle, the eye-opening documentary The New Americans: Gaming a Revolution might be the bazooka that’s needed to shatter all those cozy assumptions. So of-the-moment is Ondi Timoner’s latest work that it premiered almost exactly when the collapse of Svb made international news, and though that particular eventuality isn’t foreseen here, it won’t take much post-festival fine-tuning to bring her film bang up to date.
After last year’s Last Flight Home, an emotionally intense but beautifully calibrated meditation on her father’s right to medically assisted death, Timoner returns to her forte, which is an uncanny ability to intuit the vicissitudes of pop culture while embedding herself in it while it’s happening. With awards season now a year away, it’s hard to say whether the immediate relevance...

"The New Americans: Gaming a Revolution" takes a look at the rise of the retail trader in the stock market, the gamification of finances, and how online communities like the WallStreetBets subreddit have taken to disrupt a system that has kept regular people at arm's length and in the dark for too long. Taking a meme-ified approach to match the very meme-like subject matter, the documentary is filled with actual memes, talks of going to the moon and diamond hands, and some cool animated virtual reality footage that shows the new ways to connect in this extremely online era.
The problem is that the film doesn't interrogate a single one of its themes, but takes a rather shallow, superficial, and rushed approach, drawing connections between events while not providing much more than two dates close together and arguing one caused the other.

Chris Cuomo says CNN has done him wrong.
“I believe that was taken, I believe wrongly,” Cuomo said of the news network taking his job. He was speaking on Anthony Scaramucci’s podcast, “Open Book,” which aired Wednesday.
“I will litigate that. I am not going to bitch about it in the press.”
Cuomo already has a 125 million arbitration claim against CNN underway
But the former newscaster also talked of a darker time in the aftermath of his job loss. Cuomo said at one point he was “going to kill everybody and myself.” He added later that he sought therapy on those thoughts.
Cuomo was fired by CNN in late 2021 after it was uncovered that he was helping his brother, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, as he fought sexual harassment allegations.
Cuomo is now with NewsNation, hosting Cuomo, a primetime talk show.

As Fox Entertainment gears up for the fall season, the chief of its unscripted division is most excited about returning to production with scaled-back pandemic restrictions.
“I’m not gonna say Covid’s gone, because it’s definitely not gone, but things have become easier to film,” Rob Wade, president of alternative entertainment and specials, told Variety ahead of the network’s summer 2022 Television Critics Association press tour presentation. (Find Variety‘s interview with Fox’s scripted chief Michael Thorn here.)
“‘We have ‘The Masked Singer’ coming back,” which has been completely reinvented,” Wade said. The series, a singing competition between celebrities whose identities are concealed by elaborate costumes, debuted in 2019. Therefore, only its first two seasons got through production unaffected by Covid-19.
Season 8 will follow what Wade calls a “king or queen of the hill” format, where only one contestant will move on from each episode. After three singers...

The Republican National Committee is threatening to boycott the next general election presidential debates, even though the next matchup of the nominees won’t take place for more than three years.
RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel’s letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates calls for a series of changes, including on how the commission selects debate moderators and on the scheduling of the events.
But the letter also airs a list of grievances that could have come from Donald Trump himself. The former president railed against the commission, a bipartisan body set up in 1988 to host the debates, not just last year but in 2016.
During the most recent cycle, the most significant flare-up was over the planned second debate, which was to be in a town hall format. But after Trump contracted Covid-19, the commission altered plans and switched the format to a virtual event. After Trump rejected the change,...

Jeff Jenkins has worked on reality series The Simple Life, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and most recently, Netflix’s Bling Empire.
Deadline can reveal that Jenkins is also working with pop star Paula Abdul, former Trump advisor Anthony Scaramucci and Jocelyn Wildenstein, the socialite known for her extensive, catlike cosmetic surgery, as he looks to take advantage of the latest boom in the world of reality docusoaps.
“I like to work with the unique folks out there. They’re harder and harder to find in our homogenized world and it is definitely becoming harder and harder to find fresh, unique, on-camera talent who the viewer is compelled to watch,” he told Deadline.
His latest project, Bling Empire, launched in January 2021 and he says it has become one of Netflix’s most-watched unscripted docuseries to date, numbers that encouraged the streamer to renew it for a second season.

Refresh for updates: The Senate has spoken, and President Donald Trump has once again avoided impeachment. The 45th President of the United States issued a statement thanking his legal team and supporters.
More to the point, he vowed that “Our movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun.” Trump would have been barred from holding any future federal office if he was convicted.
Upon Saturday’s ruling a number of Hollywood figures including Mark Ruffalo, Padman Lakshmi and Wanda Sykes voiced their opinions on the decision, which acquitted Trump of impeachment charges.
While some expressed their disappointment with the outcome of the impeachment trial, others went after Sen. Mitch McConnell who gave a speech criticizing Trump, despite voting that the former president “not guilty” for inciting an insurrection on Jan. 6.
See some reactions below.

“Forget money, I’m focused on dignity and loyalty.” Those were the disturbing words spoken the other day by my favorite agent who, alas, is facing the prospect of going out of business.
Fortunately, the agent in question is French and fictional; she works for Ask and is portrayed in Call My Agent!, the hit show that began its fourth and final season on Netflix this week. Talent agents and their entourages have pitched and connived their way on TV before, but the French show has found a binge following, even among Hollywood’s besieged tenpercenters, as Variety used to call them.
Faced with strikes and streamers, the agenting community has had to make some bold moves, redefining corporate goals and expanding job descriptions. Agents are now even repping politicians and their causes as well as actors.

Late-night hosts across the board marked President Donald Trump’s final full day in office by recapping the insanity of the past four years and trying to parse what Trump’s legacy may be.
On The Late Show, Stephen Colbert opened by recounting some of the “highlights of [Trump’s] lowlights”: There was the “American carnage” inauguration speech, the “both sides” remarks after a white supremacist march in Charlottesville, wondering if he could trade Puerto Rico for Greenland, separating kids from their families at the border, inciting a riot at the...

Steve Scully is returning to C-span, after being placed on administrative leave when he admitted that he falsely claimed that his Twitter account was hacked.
In a statement, C-span said that Scully would return to work starting this week, with initial off-air assignments as a producer and a resumption of work on C-span Radio’s Washington Today and his podcast series The Weekly. No date has been set for his return as one of the cable network’s on-air hosts.
“We view October’s events as a singular episode in an otherwise successful 30-year C-span career,” the network said in a statement. “And while it was appropriate in October for Steve to be immediately relieved of his duties leading our 2020 election coverage, we reiterate our belief that now, having completed a three-month administrative leave, he can continue to contribute to Cspan’s mission.”
