Penny Dreadful was one of my favourite shows of the last few years. I’m certainly not alone in that it quickly grew into something of a cult classic. Often violent and bloody, but very stylish and superbly written and acted. It’s fair to say I was extremely disappointed when it ended after three seasons. If you are picking this book up, or are thinking of it, chances are you are a fan yourself, and missing the show just as much. If you are a newcomer to the world of Penny Dreadful, all you need to know is that it explores the horror and supernatural elements lurking under the surface in a splendidly gothic late Victorian world, and it is most definitely worth a visit.

Showtime’s Penny Dreadful Memento Mori TV Show Review. Penny Dreadful: Season 2, Episode 8: Memento Mori contained so many surprises that I am scarcely capable of summing them up in a quick, snappy line that covers them all. In Memento Mori, the longest held secret in the series was revealed: the one concerning Dorian Grey (Reeve Carney) and the painting he allows no one else to see. The most delicious and succulent surprise though was the one Lily (Billie Piper) gave the viewer in this episode. Both reveals, Dorian and Lily’s, increased the scope of Penny Dreadful beyond what had previously been seen as its boundaries. Both were “wow” moments but Lily’s was incredible.
The discovery of Dorian’s secret was inevitable. How it was built up to was not. The story leading up to the painting’s reveal expanded the universe of the series. It also...

I’ve had a chance recently to catch some, not all, of Showtime’s series, Penny Dreadful, and I’ve enjoyed it quite a bit. It takes the same concept of Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (combine genre characters from the Victorian Age into a single story) and uses it with mostly horror and supernatural characters and elements, again in Victorian London.
The “real” penny dreadfuls were the pulp fiction of their day, precursors to the pulp magazines and also comics. The TV series was created by John Logan (who, among other things, wrote Skyfall and will be writing the next two James Bond films as well) and is the co-executive producer along with James Bond director Sam Mendes (he also directed The Road to Perdition).
There are also other Bond connections, including Timothy Dalton as the African explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, who is the father of Mina Murray,...

Penny Dreadful, Season 2, Episode 1, “Fresh Hell”
Written by John Logan
Directed by James Hawes
Airs Sundays at 10 pm Et on Showtime
Season one of Showtime’s Penny Dreadful was a gleefully gruesome gothic experience, firmly rooted in pulpy sensibilities and clearly influenced by Alan Moore’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. While it was not an altogether solid season of television, it had a ghastly charm, reminiscent of lurid Hammer horror films of the past.
The first season saw a rag-tag group of Victorian-era Londonites, including the demonically possessed Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), American gunslinger (and secret werewolf) Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), and Dr. Frankenstein himself (Harry Treadaway), doing battle against ultraviolent vampires. The group banded together to embark on a quest to rescue Sir Malcolm Murray’s (Timothy Dalton) lost daughter Mina. Season one climaxed with Sir Malcolm realizing his daughter, now turned into a bloodsucker, was lost forever.

The atmosphere hanging over London as season two of Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful” begins is not heavy with horror, or despair; rather, it’s loneliness that clouds the air. Loneliness haunts its streets and parks. It drags down Miss Vanessa Ives’ beautiful face as she comes to realize, in the aftermath of season one’s lost battle to save her best friend, that instead of ridding herself of the darkness, she’s somehow been pulled closer to its center.
Loneliness threatens the very life of Victor Frankenstein as his creation grows more desperate for some connection to another soul, or lacking that, some body. It offers Ethan Chandler a solution against the danger he harbors inside his own skin, and creates a vulnerability in Sir Malcolm Murray’s armor.
That’s the subtle trick of this horror series, as loyal viewers of the first season soon discovered. “Penny Dreadful” is...

Eerie, erotic and wholly engaging, Penny Dreadful was one of the best new shows of the year, and I’m impatiently counting down the days until the Victorian-set horror-drama returns for its second season. While Showtime has announced no premiere date as of yet, a brief new teaser, titled “A Curse and a Blessing,” has just surfaced online, promising a continuation of the gory thrills that made season 1 such a compelling watch.
Unfortunately, there’s not much to the clip, which finds haunted protagonist Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) vowing to use her unusually strong connection to the shadowy Demimonde in order to help others throughout London. Elsewhere, American werewolf Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) looks pensively off into the distance, tough-as-nails explorer Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) looks sadly off to the side and scientist Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway)… really, you too, Victor?? There’s a lot of contemplation going on here.

Us in Progress 4th annual Coproduction Forum (October 22-25, 2014) held during the 5th American Film Festival in Wrocław (October 21-26) targets Polish and European film professionals to facilitate professional networking with young, independent filmmakers from the United States. It is the only event of its kind in Europe (except for its sister event held in July at the Champs Elysees Film Festival in Paris. Invitation-only screenings are screening six independent American feature-length films in the final editing stages, selected out of 40 submissions.
The 2014 Us in Progress Wrocław participants:
"Flycatcher," dir. Malcolm Murray
"God Bless the Child," dir. Rodrigo Ojeda-Beck & Robert Machoian
"The Homefront," dir. Tyler Walker & Fidel Ruiz Healy
"Nakom," dir. Travis Pittman & Kelly Daniela Norris
"Stinking Heaven," dir. Nathan Silver
"Take Me to the River," dir. Matt Sobel
All will attend the 3-day event in Wrocław.
The 2013 Us in Progress partners (who also provided the prizes - post-production service packages) include Platige Image, Di Factory, Alvernia and Soundflower Studio. This year, Chimney has joined the ranks, while prizes are also being offered by Producer's Network at Cannes and Ale Kino+ (TV rights acquisition offer).
Polish post-production studios are welcomed to take part in the program, offer their services or expand their network of potential international clients. In 2013, top prizes went to the producers of the film "Sun Belt Express" (dir. Evan Wolf Buxbaum) and "Lake Los Angeles" (dir. Mike Ott). Both films had their world premieres in the U.S.A and will screen this year in competition as part of the Spectrum section at the American Film Festival.
The best films from the last Paris (during the Champs-Elysees Film Festival) and Wrocław editions constitute the core of Aff repertoire and, after their world premieres, will compete in the Festival's Spectrum section. These include Onur Turkel's "Summer of Blood," Leah Meyerhoff's "I Believe in Unicorns" as well as "Sun Belt Express" and "Lake Los Angeles."
Importantly, reps of the top European distributors and sales agents can see unfinished projects and offer feedback and deals at the early stages of production (before screenings at Sundance or Berlinale) enabling the films to break through to the European market.
The 2014 Us in Progress formula is expanded to include a location scouting tour in Lower Silesia (in partnership with the Wrocław Film Commission), as well as a presentation of Polish projects looking for American co-producers. Polish filmmakers are increasingly seeking North American partners and are interested in learning more about new and alternative ways to produce and finance films outside the mainstream system.

Since day one, Showtime’s Penny Dreadful has been an exercise in elevating trash. Week after week, the show has delivered lyrically written, handsomely shot, beautifully acted pulp. This is by no means a slight, mind you – I love trash even when it isn’t elevated by fine performances and swoon-worthy production design. But it’s therefore a slight bit of a disappointment to round out the season with the show’s most predictable episode. This series is obsessed with curses – has it fallen prey to the “genre curse” that it has festooned itself within an inch of its life (or, in some cases, afterlife) to evade?
Let’s dig in!
A freshly exorcised Vanessa Side-Eyeves (Eva Green) tells Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) that Mina is in the Grand Guignol Theatre, because visions. Am I the only one questioning why a vampire and his burgeoning bride would hang out in...

"Penny Dreadful" has wrapped up its morose, bloody, twisty-turny, literary-infused first season, and we -- like you -- have some things to say about last night's finale. We also have some questions that we hope get answered in Season 2, which will likely air a year from now. Just take that in for a second.
Good?
Ok, let's move on. We're going to recap the finale a bit first, then ask some questions. Remember, we're going to be discussing the show in some detail, so thar be Spoilers Ahead.
If you haven't seen "Penny Dreadful" yet, find out where to watch it.
Sir Malcolm Murray and the Not-So-Mysterious Case of Mina Harker
So, while Sir Malcolm and his ragtag group of supernatural warriors were able to kill The Vampire That Dare Not Speak Its Name with what looked like an oversized knitting needle, it wasn't enough to bring his daughter Mina back from the undead.

For most of its run, Showtime's "Penny Dreadful" has been relatively dark, sometimes sexy but overall never really the nail-biting series most of us horror fans anticipated. Last night's episode, however, finally brought the scare factor. Read More: Review: 'Penny Dreadful' Kicks Into a Terrifying New Gear in Episode 6 as Eva Green Takes Bdsm to Another LevelSince its beginning, Vanessa Ives has been the center of "Penny Dreadful." We are first introduced to her as the wise but tortured woman who recruits Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) to help her and Sir Malcolm Murray rescue the latter's daughter from an evil, supernatural creature. She's always a transfixing presence, which we must credit to Green's all-out performance. And, while it's not exactly explicit, we can assume that without Ms. Ives, things would be rather quiet in this Victorian world. "Possession," the second to last episode of the season, takes off from where we ended.

Another week of Penny Dreadful, another break with form, and another master class in on-camera freak-outs from one Eva Green. While I have to admit I’m a bit puzzled as to how this is all going to come to any kind of satisfying conclusion in next week’s finale (and maybe it isn’t), this week’s marathon possession was, as usual, cracklingly good gothic horror, gorgeously shot and beautifully performed.
This week’s action took place entirely inside of Malcolm Murray’s mansion, where the lovely and haunted Vanessa Side-Eyeves (Green) found herself losing her lifelong battle with whatever demonic force attached itself to her when she was just a young girl watching her mom have sex in the hedge maze. Apparently unleashed by her ugly-bumping session with Dorian Gray, this demon takes over Vanessa and seemingly for weeks on end the other men in her life prove...

Through the first six episodes of Penny Dreadful, it's been difficult to find a hero in the crowd of original characters mixed in with literary classics. Who to root for? Who is wearing the white (or at least grayish) hat? There's the vision seeing Vanessa Ives with her creepy eyes and evil streak, Sir Malcolm Murray and his self-centered quest for adventure, Dr. Victor Frankenstein and his neglect of his first creation, Dorian Gray who wants to do it with anything with legs or a stem (remember the orchid?) or the elusive Mina who is so whiny and wimpy it's difficult to hope for a tearful reunion with daddy.
In "What Death Can Join Together," we finally have a hero on our hands in the form of a crass American gunslinger with a soft spot for sick, slightly whorish gals.

Real and mythological, figurative and literal; monsters of all kinds abound in Sky Atlantic’s new period horror series Penny Dreadful. We might expect a skulking figure in a top hat and frock coat to be scary, though who would have thought a bustle and redingote could be so terrifying? Well, step forward Eva Green as enigmatic Vanessa Ives. Not hero nor villain, but a dead eyed clairvoyant who definitely shouldn’t be invited to dinner parties.
Eva Green as Vanessa Ives. Green’s costumes are tinged with arachnid symbolism, such as webby lace and orb-like patterns on her frocks. One of the show’s promo posters (Here) has Green in a scorpion edged dress, but this may have been added digitally.
Penny Dreadful is set in 1891, although is more a literary parallel universe than true reflection of the era. Some of the characters featured are written for...

Hey Liberal Dead-heads, it’s Ryne from The Moon is a Dead World. This week on DEADtime TV we’re covering all of Rosemary’s Baby in two installments, plus the premiere of Penny Dreadful covered by Shawn! He’s also continuing his review of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, and I’ve got my hands full with the rest. Enjoy!
Rosemary’s Baby: “Night One” - Sunday, May 11 at 9 Pm
Let’s get this right out in the open: it doesn’t matter if a remake of Rosemary’s Baby is necessary or warranted, doesn’t matter in comparison to Roman Polanski’s original. This NBC miniseries is its own program and should be treated as such, not likened to what came before it. A remake should stand or fall on its own merits, not be treated as the ugly little brother. So in reviewing “Night One” and “Night Two,...

"This really is the singular vision of one person - and I was lucky enough to be in his vicinity when he had the idea."
Oscar-winning filmmaker Sam Mendes may hold an executive producer credit on Penny Dreadful but he's quick to emphasise that it is John Logan - also his collaborator on the 2012 James Bond film Skyfall - who is the driving creative force behind the fantasy horror series.
"I was sitting in the cutting room for Skyfall - which he co-wrote - and he came in with a completed script," Mendes recalls. "What I read is almost word-for-word what you're going to see on the screen."
Penny Dreadful was shot in Dublin - the home of Dracula author Bram Stoker - and is a television drama inspired by the classics of horror literature, with Stoker's novel, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray all feeding into Logan's vision.

Penny Dreadful Season 1, Episode 1 “Night Work”
Written by John Logan
Directed by J.A. Bayona
Airs Sundays at 10pm Et on Showtime
There’s nothing like a show confident in what it’s doing. Of the dozens of pilots I watch a year, an overwhelming majority of them feel the need to explain themselves, over and over again: who their characters are, what matters to them, why they exist – and most annoyingly, why this particular story is the most epic, most original, best thing we’ve ever seen: in a world full of short attention spans, supremely critical audiences, and short-lived bombs with anemic audience draw, most pilots have to convince us that we need to be watching their show.
By comparison, Penny Dreadful‘s pilot, “Night Work”, seems like it could care less about explicitly defining itself. Under the pen of John Logan (the screenwriter for The Aviator, Skyfall, Sweeney Todd,...

Penny Dreadful, starring Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, and Josh Hartnett as adventurers piecing together a ghastly and possibly supernatural conspiracy in Victorian London, is a wonderful surprise, provided you have a high tolerance for gore and will go wherever the show's delightfully absurd story takes you. Set around the time of Jack the Ripper's murder spree, the show's first episode kicks off with a horrifying but artfully elided atrocity and continues from there. London is terrorized by butchers: not just the Ripper, but a mysterious band of cult-like murderers and kidnappers whose motives are unknown. An adventurer, Sir Malcolm Murray (Dalton) is determined to rescue his daughter, who apparently was abducted by the fiends; he's joined by his empathic and darkly elegant partner Vanessa Ives (Green), his ominously quiet valet Sembène (Danny Sapani), and an American cowboy named Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), a lost soul with amazing gunfighting skills who...

Psychosexual horror drama Penny Dreadful weaves together the origin stories of (in)famous literary characters while reimagining them in Victorian London. It’s kind of like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but with Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, and Josh Hartnett leading the charge to understand the weird, unnatural world around them.
Dalton and Green play mysterious explorer Sir Malcolm Murray and supernaturally-in-touch sidekick Vanessa Ives respectively; in the first episode, the pair attempt to recruit sharpshooting American Ethan Chandler (Hartnett) in their quest.
Here’s what else you should know before the premiere:

“There is only one worthy goal for scientific exploration: Piercing the tissue that separates life from death.” So says a young scientist in the first episode of Showtime's magnificent new drama, “Penny Dreadful.” He is addressing Timothy Dalton, who plays Sir Malcolm Murray, an explorer plumbing London's depths in search of his lost daughter. See video: A ‘Penny Dreadful’ Sex Tour: Where Victorians Picked Up Hookers and Bought Porn The quest parallels one in Bram Stoker's “Dracula,” and it's just one of the ways the show's new characters intermingle with ones from Victorian literature. Eva Green plays Vanessa Ives,...

1.1 Night Work
With the rising popularity of series like American Horror Story, Hannibal and Bates Motel, modern gothic is very much in the murky spotlight on television at the moment. Returning to Victorian literature for inspiration, Penny Dreadful takes the gothic back into the past, pitching its intrepid supernatural fighters Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) and Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) into a world full of vampires and men playing with other undead things. There’s a considerable pedigree behind it with Skyfall’s John Logan and Sam Mendes as Executive Producers, Logan on screenwriting duties and directors such as J.A. Bayona and Coky Giedroyc on board during the series’ eight episode run.
The opening episode is largely about establishing the world...

Los Angeles (AP) — A big reason film actors are drawn to TV is that it offers the sort of character-driven projects found less and less in a movie world tilted toward blockbusters. That's partly why Josh Hartnett jumped into "Penny Dreadful," an eight-part series debuting Sunday on Showtime (10 p.m. Edt) as part of a free preview weekend. He plays a troubled American, a gun for hire, ensnared by Victorian London's dark side in the horror drama-cum-psychological study. Hartnett also appreciated the guarantee that the project would be marketed and presented to an audience, something he's become painfully aware isn't always the case with independent films. "I've had worthy films not get a correct release, and have people come up to me later and say how much they enjoyed the film," seen after the fact online or on DVD, he said. "It's gratifying to know that people go back and see stuff,...
