Hello and welcome to the Scene 2 Seen podcast, and I am your host, Valerie Complex. Sorry for not posting last week, but the Sundance Film Festival was brutal and couldn’t get an episode out in time.
Today’s guest is Till star Jalyn Hall.
At 15 years old, Hall has already developed a following as fan favorite on the uber-popular CW series All American, where he has played Dillon James since 2018. Segueing into film, he turned in a groundbreaking performance portraying civil rights icon Emmett Till in MGM/Orion Pictures’ Till, which hit theaters in October. The film, an biographical drama written and directed by Chinonye Chukwu, also stars Danielle Deadwyler and Whoopi Goldberg, who also produced the film. It tells the real-life story of Mamie Till-Mobley (Deadwyler), an educator and activist who pursues justice after the 1955 lynching of her 14-year-old son Emmett.

Exclusive: Jalyn Hall (All American) has signed on to play Emmett Till in Chinonye Chukwu’s Till, MGM’s Orion Pictures announced today.
The 14-year-old actor will appear in the film alongside previously announced cast members Danielle Deadwyler and Whoopi Goldberg.
Till tells the story of Mamie Till-Mobley (Deadwyler), whose pursuit of justice for her 14-year-old son Emmett Louis Till became a galvanizing moment that helped lead to the creation of the civil rights movement. Mamie’s decision to have an open casket at Emmett’s funeral, and to have Jet magazine publish David Jackson’s funeral photos, was driven by her motivation to ensure people everywhere knew what had happened to her son.
The feature is based in part on the original research of Keith Beauchamp for his award-winning 2005 doc The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till.
Chukwu wrote the screenplay, based on a previous draft by Keith Beauchamp and Michael J P Reilly.

The housebound edition of the 18th finale show of “American Idol” was more subdued than usual given that the final five hopefuls announced at the top of the show — Arthur Gunn, Dillon James, Just Sam, Francisco Martin and Johnny West — had no live audience cheering them on save for judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan and a coterie of family and friends at remote locales. Usually they can feed off the electricity of a packed auditorium of “Idol” fans, swaybots included. But the restrictions of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic muffled what is usually a rather boisterous celebration of music and talent that ends with the season’s competitors hugging each other and honoring the new “American Idol” with an explosion of confetti and good wishes.
Alas, because of the country’s continued need to shelter in place, this last show of the year was not being broadcast live nationwide.

The first order of business was trimming the remaining seven contestants down to five, which meant the elimination of two more fan favorites. This left the Top 5 — Dillon James, Jonny West, Arthur Gunn, Francisco Martin and Just Sam — to sing for America’s real-time votes.

“American Idol” has been renewed for a 19th season and its 4th on ABC. There is no news yet if host Ryan Seacrest or judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan will return to the singing competition, but we can expect a new batch of hopeful pop stars to compete for the title in 2021.
During its three-month run to date, “American Idol” is Sunday’s #1 broadcast series with adults 18-49. Despite having to adjust their format throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, the series has actually increased delayed viewing across linear and digital platforms by 23%. ABC has renewed “American Idol” for a fourth season.
The singing competition series, like the rest of the television industry, has faced production shutdowns due to the coronavirus. But instead of going off the air, the show has been airing episodes filmed remotely since April 26, with judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, as well as host Ryan Seacrest, mentor Bobby Bones, and all top 20 contestants shooting their segments from home.
The Season 3 finale airs Sunday, May 17 at 8 p.m. Et, at which point viewers will first vote to narrow the talent pool down from seven to five and then later crown the winner.

“American Idol” has been renewed for a fourth season at ABC.
The news comes just days ahead of the Season 3 finale, which will air on the broadcast network on May 17. Among the performances scheduled for the finale are: Luke Bryan performing his new single “One Margarita;” Katy Perry performing her new single “Daisies;” and Lionel Richie performing “We Are the World” along with his fellow “Idol” judges, the top 11 contestants, and several past “American Idol” winners.
The top 7 going into the finale are Arthur Gunn, Dillon James, Francisco Martin, Jonny West, Julia Gargano, Just Sam, and Louis Knight.
The show would typically end with a splashy live finale, but the coronavirus pandemic forced the storied singing competition series to begin filming remote episodes for the first time in its history.
The judges to date in the ABC incarnation of the show have been Bryan, Perry, and Richie, as well as host Ryan Seacrest.

On the May 10 episode of “American Idol,” the Top 7 sang two songs apiece: one in honor of Mother’s Day and another from the Disney catalog. Only five of the seven contestants will make it through to Sunday’s finale based on their votes from the public. We asked for your predictions as to which of these finalists will go all the way to win season 18 on May 17.
“American Idol” fans remain divided between two of the artists: Arthur Gunn has 31% of the viewers vote as of this writing and Just Sam is at 21%. Each is up by four points from last week, as they split the support for the four eliminated contestants: Sophia James, Grace Leer, Makayla Phillips and Jovin Webb.

Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, “American Idol” had to understandably scrap some of its plans for Season 18. Since the finale of the long-running reality TV show isn’t airing live coast-to-coast as it has the past two seasons, when Maddie Poppe (2018) and Laine Hardy (2019) prevailed, viewers on the West Coast won’t be able to vote for the winner after watching the performances on their television screens. By the time the season finale airs in the western part of the country, the winner will have already been crowned by fans in the east. Have no fear, West Coast viewers: ABC has provided Gold Derby with an infographic (see below) to explain how You can still vote for your favorite finalist in real time.

The 18th season finale of “American Idol” — and its third on ABC — will be done as a live remote for the first time ever starting at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on Sunday, May 17. Despite having to deal with piecing together a show with performers from countless locales because of the coronavirus epidemic, the show will feature past “Idol” winners and fan favorites as well as actress-singer Cynthia Erivo, the country band Rascal Flatts and more.
However, important business will come first as the Top 7 contenders — Arthur Gunn, Dillon James, Francisco Martin, Jonny West, Julia Gargano, Just Sam and Louis Knight — shrink to the Top 5. Once that is announced, the quintet of hopefuls will each perform two songs, one to celebrate being in the Top 5 and another tune that they sang previously.

There were several highlight moments on Sunday’s episode of “American Idol” as the Top 20 performed in the safety of their own homes and the judges provided critiques from their somewhat more upscale domiciles. Not even a worldwide epidemic can stop these talented singers from giving it their all. Among my favorites were Dillon James aka the spiritual cowboy with his ready-for-a-music-video Western backdrop as he sang Ray Lamontagne‘s “Let it Be Me” and Just Sam in a red gown while doing justice to Fantasia‘s “Believe.”
But the performance that really got to me was Jonny West, the 23-year-old piano teacher from Murrieta, California, who went through to the Hollywood rounds with his sweetheart and returning auditioner Margie Mays. Alas, Margie did not make the top 40. But last night, she gladly filled in as her honey’s stage crew and got some camera time herself on the show as well.

“American Idol” wasn’t about to let the Covid-19 pandemic stop America from voting for the season 18 winner. The producers have sent the same set of camera equipment and lighting to each of the Top 20 contestants. Just as the artists are housebound, so are the three judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — who will weigh in with their thoughts live. You can have your say too by voting in the poll below.
The Top 20 will compete in a special episode slated to air on April 26. The Top 10 will perform on May 3 in the first of three live shows (all branded “Live Coast to Coast Feed”) hosted, as ever, by Ryan Seacrest. The season 18 “American Idol” winner will be crowned on the May 17 finale.
We were originally supposed to have six live shows, starting with a Top 14 on April 12. The Top 10 were to take to the stage on April...
