The 15th annual Black List survey was revealed Monday December 16, and it includes 66 un-produced screenplays from up-and-coming literary talent. Results were pooled from a survey of more than 250 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to 10 favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2019 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year. This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the Black List.
Since 2005, more than a third of the screenplays included in the annual Black List surveys have become produced films, and often to notoriety — such as “Argo,” “American Hustle,” “Juno,” “The King’s Speech,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Spotlight,” “The Revenants,” “The Descendants,” and “Hell or High Water.” Melina Matsoukas’s 2019 film “Queen & Slim,” written by Lena Waithe with a story co-authored by James Frey, was featured on the 2018 Black List.

Years ago, in the pages of Men’s Journal, I confessed to a psychotic obsession with the NFL draft. I dreamed of leaving journalism and being allowed to turn around a wayward team like the Jacksonville Jaguars using ideas like, “Always pick the guy who falls in the draft after a positive weed test.”
But Jaguars owner Shahid Khan never returned my calls. Moreover, I’m beginning to think the NFL won’t exist 20 years from now, because of that minor problem of the sport being physically lethal to its employees.

Updated With Full List Of Scripts, Writers, And Reps: Catherine The Great, about the rise and life of the famous (sometimes notorious) 18th-Century Russian monarch, was the top vote-getter among 70 scripts chosen for the 2014 Black List of the year’s best un-produced scripts. The screenplay, by Los Angeles writer and producer Kristina Lauren Anderson, was announced as part of an hour-plus process on Twitter and YouTube this morning.
Each of the 70 screenplays on this 10th annual list was chosen by a group of 250 development executives, agents and other Hollywood insiders as among the year’s best un-produced scripts in a process overseen by Franklin Leonard of http://www.blcklst.com. Anderson’s screenplay received 51 votes.
Other notables in the list include writer/actor/director Kenneth Lonergan with Manchester-By-The-Sea, which is being produced by Matt Damon and Chris Moore. Randall Green had two scripts make the list, The Swimsuit Issue and Cartoon Girl.

We're more than halfway through No-Shave November (known as Movember to the philanthropically-inclined), and men all over the world have taken this eleventh month to show off their facial hair skills. Personally, I have abandoned my No-Shave attempt, since it was looking less like Harley from Epic Meal Time and more like Adam Morrison. However, if I had known about the new Total Bearding Network web series from IFC, I might have been inspired to keep it up. Total Bearding Network is an animated fake news program that discusses various beard-related stories such a feature on the world's first bearded woman and a look into the beard capital of the world, Brooklyn. The stories are very wacky, but what really shines are the banter segments, where the two hosts--strong-voiced Ken Guntruck and weak-willed Pete Meeker--form a news desk odd couple. Total Bearding Network's style reminded me of Waco Valley, but with more hair.

Buzz Bissinger received a torrent of abuse for saying the NBA's popularity is declining without white superstars. Now comes Jimmer Fredette, who's dominating March Madness chatter not because he's the best-but because he's white.
A couple of weeks ago I wrote a column about the specter of race in the National Basketball Association. I said the league's popularity was being affected because some white fans were turned off to a game in which there was not a single white American superstar.

It was not pretty. Most of the cuts have healed except for the one on my elbow.
I fervently believe what I wrote. There was supporting evidence I should have put in but did not because a column is an opinion and space isn't unlimited at The Daily Beast. I have since discovered more compelling evidence.
