Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” which welcomed back Jon Stewart as one of its hosts this year, will continue its election year tradition of taking the show on the road to the national political conventions this summer, Variety can confirm.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has decided on a vice presidential running mate from a short list that includes NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers and former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura. According to his campaign manager, Kennedy is close to announcing his pick.
Other prospective candidates include Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard and motivational speaker Tony Robbins, according to two anonymous people with knowledge of the campaign.
Not everyone on Kennedy’s list has agreed to run with him. Paul said that he would decline an offer to be on the presidential ticket.
“I’m supportive of his ability to have a platform to speak out,” Paul said. “I think he’s saying a lot of good things. But I have no plans to get involved in the campaign.”
Similarly, Gabbard has stopped cooperating with Kennedy’s campaign and has seemingly turned her attention to former President Donald Trump’s.

A consultant for Robert Kennedy Jr.’s 2024 campaign registered the website for Kennedy and his potential vice presidential selection, New York Jets quarterback and fellow vaccine skeptic Aaron Rodgers, according to digital records reviewed by Rolling Stone.
Kennedy recently told The New York Times that Rodgers was on his shortlist for vice president — though he appeared to pop that trial balloon on Friday. “We have an extraordinary person, I can’t tell you who it is, but it’s not any of the people they’ve been talking about,” the candidate told supporters.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) said that Dr. Anthony Fauci should go to prison for his “dishonesty” regarding the Covid-19 pandemic and accused the former U.S. chief medical adviser to the president of lying to Congress.
“For his dishonesty, frankly, he should go to prison,” Paul said on The Cats Roundtable radio show on Wabc. “If you lie to Congress, and you’re dishonest, and you won’t accept responsibility. For his mistake in judgment, he should just be pilloried. He should never be accepted.”
Later, he added, “History should judge him as a deficient person who made one of the worst decisions in public health history — in the entire history of the world.”
He then accused Fauci of working with a lab in China to develop the Covid virus, which killed “somewhere between 10 and 20 million” worldwide.
Paul accused Fauci of deciding to “fund dangerous research — gain-of-function research, where you allow viruses to be combined.

After Midnight finally made its debut January 16 in the timeslot formerly held by James Corden.
Hosted by comedian Taylor Tomlinson, the show is a reboot of the old Comedy Central game show @midnight, which ran for 600 episodes on the sibling Paramount-owned network. For those who didn’t see the original version, imagine a combination of Who’s Line Is It Anyway? and Tosh 2.0: it’s an internet-themed panel game show that challenges comedians to come up with the best yuks during a series of improv games.
For the premiere, Whitney Cummings battled it out against Aparna Nancherla (former writer on Late Night with Seth Meyers) and Kurt Braunohler (former host of IFC’s Bunk) in front of a studio audience for the grand prize of “my father’s approval,” quipped Tomlinson. “It is rare but winnable.”

A top anti-vaxxer has taken over Robert Kennedy Jr.’s campaign communications shop — underscoring the fringe, anti-science thrust of the independent candidate’s presidential bid.

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky) has got a lot of problems with you Congress people. And today, you’re gonna hear about them.
Paul has posted his ninth annual online salute to government waste as part of today’s Festivus celebration. His “Festivus Report” airs his grievances about an alleged “whopping $900 billion of waste” in federal spending.
Festivus, for the uninitiated, was a noncommercial holiday made up by Frank Costanza (played by Jerry Stiller) on the classic Seinfeld sitcom. Each December 23, Costanza, rejecting the crass commercialism that has built up around the Christmas holiday, opted for a Festivus dinner, an unadorned aluminum pole as a substitute Christmas totem, and the annual “Airing of Grievances,” followed by “Feats of Strength.”
The episode refers to the holiday as “a Festivus for the rest of us,” and quickly became part of the cultural zeitgeist.

In a Republican conference lunch at the Capitol on Thursday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) came to the aid of Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) when she started to choke.
Paul reportedly performed the Heimlich maneuver on Ernst.
Ernst later thanked Paul on X where she made a joke about the cause of the incident.

Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-South Dakota), who attended the lunch, clarified to the public that Ernst choked on food, not policies.
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) had posted a picture to X in celebration of that day’s Iowa-inspired meal. The photo of the meal featured dishes such as pork chops and beef sandwiches.
Multiple Republicans expressed their gratitude for Paul’s quick action. Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyoming) praised Paul.

If you ask advocates for abortion rights where the most critical elections will be this November, they’re likely to name four states: Ohio, the site of a high-stakes referendum; Virginia, the last state in the South where abortion remains widely accessible (and where the governor has promised to “gleefully” ban the practice if his party gains control of the legislature); Kentucky, where the most outspoken advocate of the state’s near-total abortion ban is running against a pro-choice Democrat; and Pennsylvania, where a key seat on the Supreme Court is on the line.

Donald Trump got indicted again on Tuesday and, once again, it’s all pretty damning.
The former president is accused of perpetrating an illegal scheme to circumvent the democratic process and stay in power despite losing the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden, leading to, as Special Counsel Jack Smith described it, “an unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy.”
Trump’s lawyers, allies in Congress, and propagandists across right-wing media, however, want you to believe he was indicted merely for voicing concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.

For years, Jesse Watters has signed off his various shows on Fox News with the cringe-inducing catchphrase “I’m Watters, and this is my world.” And as of Monday night, Fox News did indeed become Watters world. Watters — who cut his teeth as a minion to Bill O’Reilly — has officially taken over Fox’s coveted primetime 8 p.m. time slot.
Watters’ ascension takes place almost three months after Fox News unceremoniously fired right-wing kingmaker Tucker Carlson. After weeks of auditioning potential replacements, Fox rearranged their existing primetime lineup – sans Carlson – into a new schedule.

Update: The Senate cleared the debt ceiling bill late on Thursday, the final hurdle for the U.S. to avoid default on its debt with a deadline approaching in just a matter of days.
The bill, which passed 63-36, now goes to President Joe Biden. It ends the most precarious standoff over the debt limit since 2011. Forty four Democrats, 17 Republicans and two independents voted in favor; four Democrats, 31 Republicans and one independent voted against.
“Senators from both parties voted to protect our heard-earned economic progress and prevent a first-ever default,” Biden said. “No one gets everything they want in a negotiation, but make no mistake: this bipartisan agreement is a big win for our economy and the American people.”
The president is planning an Oval Office address at 7 p.m. Et on Friday.
Senate leaders issued a statement saying that the legislation would not limit their ability to appropriate emergency funds for the military.

Frank Capra made James Stewart into the heart of Hollywood. In their second movie together, "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington," Stewart played Jefferson Smith, a "Boy Ranger" leader in an unnamed Western state. Smith is appointed to fill one of the state's Senate seats after its holder dies. When he arrives in DC, his naïveté and kindness turn him into a reformer. After he's framed for corruption, he embarks on a 24-hour filibuster (a speech on the Senate Floor that cannot be interrupted so long as a Senator has something to say), attempting to rally the people's attention and sway the Senate's conscience.
Smith grows more and more exhausted as the scene goes on, so Stewart's performance had to reflect this. In particular, Capra wanted Stewart's voice to be as hoarse as Smith's should be after speaking for 24 hours straight. To make the voice right, Stewart recruited a doctor -- not to safeguard his health,...

Voters in reliably red Kentucky rejected a ballot measure aimed at denying any state constitutional protections for abortion while voters in battleground Michigan enshrined abortion rights in their state’s constitution — joining Democratic California and Vermont in taking that step.
The Kentucky result bucked the state’s Republican-led Legislature, which had imposed a near-total ban on the procedure and put the proposed state constitutional amendment on the ballot. It also mirrored what happened in another red state, Kansas, where voters in August rejected changing that state’s constitution to let lawmakers tighten restrictions or ban abortions.
The Tuesday ballot measures came months after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to abortion it guaranteed to women nationwide. The decision in June has led to near-total bans in a dozen states.

One of the breakout stars of the 2020 election cycle was a young dad from Louisville, Kentucky: progressive representative Charles Booker, who took on the Democratic establishment candidate, Amy McGrath, in the primary. Both McGrath and Booker hoped to unseat Mitch McConnell, who happened to be up for re-election that year, a man whose been in the Senate for as long (37 years) as Charles Booker has been alive.
With McGrath already raking in millions of dollars in donations thanks to a campaign ad highlighting her experience as a fighter pilot, Booker undertook a socially-distanced bus campaign, a journey not just to win the primary, but also to unite Kentuckians across racial boundaries, with the common goal of ending poverty in the state, one of the poorest in the nation.
That journey is depicted in Pat McGee’s documentary “From the Hood to the Holler,” which takes its title from one of Booker’s campaign slogans.

Anthony Fauci, who has been the public face of the U.S. response to the Covid pandemic after a long tenure leading the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Monday that he plans to step down in December. He also will depart as President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser.
“I will be leaving these positions in December of this year to pursue the next chapter of my career,” Fauci said in a statement.
His departure had been expected, as he signaled in July that he planned to retire by the time that Biden’s current term ends.
“It has been the honor of a lifetime to have led the Niaid, an extraordinary institution, for so many years and through so many scientific and public health challenges,” Fauci said. “I am very proud of our many accomplishments. I have worked with — and learned from — countless talented and dedicated people in my own laboratory,...

The Senate passed legislation to extend health and disability benefits to millions of veterans exposed to toxic burn pits in Iraq, Afghanistan and other areas of military engagement.
The 86-11 vote came after Republicans blocked the legislation last week, with a number of the lawmakers having previously supported it when it came before the Senate in June.
Jon Stewart, a longtime advocate for the veterans, blasted the opposition, speaking at rallies on Capitol Hill multiple times over the past week and making a series of media appearances on network Sunday shows, Fox News and Newsmax. Stewart was in the chamber for the Senate vote, and hugged veterans after it passed.
The bill, the Honoring Our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act (or the Pact Act), is designed to address the inability of veterans to access healthcare as they reported a range of illnesses. It now goes to President Joe Biden for signing.

The Emmett Till Antilynching Act passed through Congress in March, with all but three Republicans voting for it in the House of Representatives and the Senate approving it unanimously. The bill, which designates lynching as a hate crime punishable by up to 30 years in prison, would have gone into effect sooner if Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) didn’t singlehandedly block its passage in the summer of 2020 — just days after George Floyd was murdered by police in Minnesota.

Conservative media’s coverage of Tuesday’s massacre in Uvalde, Texas, has been filled with gross speculation and calls to transform elementary schools into military-grade compounds patrolled by gun-toting teachers. The response from the Republican politicians was just as sickening.
The GOP has for years been working to stonewall the passage of meaningful gun control legislation, with their obsession with (and misinterpretation of) the Second Amendment only intensifying as mass shootings have become more frequent. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) literally begged his conservative colleagues to take the issue seriously on the floor of Congress.

At the core of Russia’s recent invasion of Ukraine is the notion of sovereignty — and in particular, whether Ukraine deserves it. Ukrainians, and the vast majority of people and governments in the rest of the world, say it does. Russia, which invaded the country in late February in an attempt to overthrow its government and make it into a subservient vassal state, says it doesn’t. Apparently, U.S. Senator Rand Paul also believes Ukraine isn’t a state, based on this head-scratching exchange with Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

The Senate voted to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court on Thursday, clearing the way for her to become the first Black woman to serve on the high court.
The vote was 53-47, reflecting the increasing partisan divisions over recent confirmations of nominees to the bench. Three Republicans — Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Mitt Romney — joined with all members of the Democratic caucus to confirm her.
Vice President Kamala Harris presided over the vote, a rare event in which all members were present in their seats during the roll call. After she announced the final tally, the chamber erupted into sustained applause. Many Republican left the chamber during the ovation, but Romney stayed and clapped.
Major broadcast networks provided special reports of the moment, in addition to cable news networks. There was a moment of some drama, as senators waited for Sen. Rand Paul (R-ky) to show up.

Republicans have plans for after the midterm elections if they retake the Senate: endless bullshit investigations into the Biden administration. When The Hill asked GOP Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) what issues he would scrutinize, Johnson replied, “Like everything? It’s like a mosquito in a nudist colony. It’s a target-rich environment.”
Johnson mentioned the administration’s coronavirus response as one possible area of investigation, telling The Hill, “There’s so much more in terms of what happened with our federal health agencies that we need to explore.” In the middle of the pandemic,...

The House of Representatives on Monday night passed The Emmett Till Antilynching Act, which would make lynching a federal hate crime. The bill received unanimous support save for three Republicans. Reps. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.), Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), and Chip Roy (R-Texas) opposed the bill.
In explaining his “no” vote, Massie wrote in a Twitter thread that designating enhanced penalties “for ‘hate’ tends to endanger other liberties such as freedom of speech.” He also argued that lynching is illegal in all states already.
Roy issued a statement Tuesday explaining his decision.

Republicans, the party that elected President Donald Trump, have recently renewed their call for President Joe Biden to submit to a cognitive exam. For the past 11 days, hundreds of protestors, many of whom are driving big-rig trucks have occupied Canada’s capital city of Ottawa, blocking streets and disrupting the city with raucous demonstrations. These trucker protests, led by the so-called “Freedom Convoy” now besieging Ottawa, began after the Canadian and U.S. government enacted a rule requiring cross-border truckers to be fully vaccinated in order to get into either of the two countries.
The protests, like massive, heavily polarized movements are wont to do, spiraled into a wider, incoherent demonstration against public health measures as a whole.

Exclusive: Olivia Nuzzi, the Washington correspondent for New York magazine who wrote some of the wildest stories about President Donald Trump during his four years in office, is turning her attention to television.
Nuzzi is working on a pitch-black satirical drama set in Washington, DC for AMC. She has teamed up with Killing Eve exec producer Gina Mingacci on the project, A Message From the State.
Although the logline is under wraps, Deadline understands it follows a young reporter in DC who defects from the mainstream media.
Nuzzi will write and exec produce with Mingacci, who struck an overall deal with AMC Studios in 2020.
Nuzzi said, “To stop myself from walking directly into the Potomac while covering the White House and presidential campaign, I started a writing exercise for my own amusement: could this be any funnier and more f*cked up than it already is? The result is the least factual,...

Jimmy Kimmel offered an impassioned defense of Dr. Anthony Fauci during his opening monologue on Tuesday evening’s episode of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
“If you’ve been watching Fox News, you know that the real enemy isn’t the virus or the do-my-own-research geniuses who refuse to get the vaccine. Major conservative voices, such as Tucker Carlson, Sen. Rand Paul and Sen. Ted Cruz, took issue with Fauci’s recent declaration that he “represents science” on CBS’ Nov. 28 episode of “Face the Nation.”

YouTube has suspended Rand Paul for one week for spreading Covid misinformation after the Kentucky Senator said in a now-expunged video that “most of the masks you get over the counter don’t work,” and reiterated that "cloth masks don’t work."
This marks the first strike on Paul’s channel, YouTube said -- which has amassed 19 million lifetime views (though his subscriber count appears to have been privated).
On social media, Paul -- a former opthamologist -- referred to the YouTube strike as a “badge of honor.” He continued, the “leftwing cretins at YouTube bann[ed] me for seven days for a video that quotes two peer-reviewed articles saying cloth masks don’t work.”

Rand Paul, a United States senator and Republican Party figure of considerable stature, was suspended by YouTube on Wednesday for violating the platform’s policy about spreading Covid-19 misinformation.
Paul has long been a vocal opponent of measures to prevent the spread of the disease, sparring often with Dr. Anthony Fauci while calling for supporters to “resist” the government’s “anti-science” mandates. In the video that triggered the week-long suspension, he claimed that “most of the masks you get over the counter don’t work,” that masks “don’t prevent infection,...

Sen. Rand Paul’s YouTube account was suspended Tuesday after he posted a video questioning the effectiveness of masks in stopping the spread of Covid-19. This is the second coronavirus video of the senator’s that YouTube has removed in keeping with its guidelines: “YouTube doesn’t allow content about Covid-19 that poses a serious risk of egregious harm. YouTube doesn’t allow content that spreads medical misinformation that contradicts local health authorities’ or the World Health Organization’s (Who) medical information about Covid-19.”
On Twitter, Paul confirmed his suspension, writing, “A badge of honor . . . leftwing cretins at Youtube banning me for 7 days for a video that quotes 2 peer reviewed articles saying cloth masks don’t work.”
He told his followers they could find the “banned video” at Liberty Tree, a libertarian website. Paul announced the creation of Liberty Tree earlier this month, urging conservatives to flock there but promising...

John Oliver opened Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight” by briefly talking about a problem with the American military’s ongoing withdrawal from Afghanistan, which is scheduled to be completed by August 31. Afghan translators who assisted American troops throughout the war were promised visas to come to the United States, and the Biden administration is coming up short on that assurance. The translators are calling on the president to cut through the red tape and grant them special visas quickly because the Taliban has killed more than 300 of them or their family members for “treason.”
Oliver criticized Biden for a recent speech in which the president didn’t take enough responsibility for the translators’ fates. “There is a home for you in the United States, if you so choose, and we will stand with you, just as you stood with us,” Biden said.
“It’s clearly not so much their choice as it is ours,...

John Oliver continued to take shots at Biden’s failed promises on this week’s episode of Last Week Tonight.
Though the United States has moved most of their troops out of Afghanistan well ahead of the Aug. 31 deadline Biden set, thousands of Afghan translators who aided American troops during the war have yet to be granted visas to move their families to the United States. A majority of them are being constantly threatened with death by the Taliban for their treasonous actions. As of June 2021, more than 300 translators or their family members have been killed.
Though Biden has vocalized support for the translators saying, “there is a home for you in the United States… we’ll stand with you as you have stood with us,” Oliver reminded the President no one controls their destiny more than Americans do.
“Putting the choice on the applicants is basically a surgeon handing you a scalpel saying,...
