Ezra Sosa had nothing to lose during “Top 6 Perform” night on “So You Think You Can Dance.” America’s votes had landed him in the bottom two in both of the preceding weeks, so he had to pull out all the stops to have any hope of reaching the final four. And pull out the stops he did. His contemporary duet with all-star Gaby Diaz was one of the night’s best performances, so good that it brought the judges (and Sosa himself) to tears. Scroll down to watch it below.
This contemporary number brought Sosa together with two “Sytycd” all-stars for the price of one. There was season 12 champ Diaz, of course, but also season seven contestant Robert Roldan, who choreographed the routine about a relationship that has become a burden. When Roldan asked Sosa if he could relate to the subject, Sosa alluded to a relationship he had...

Hey, "So You Think You Can Dance" fans. Tonight, September 2,2019, another Live performances/results show did indeed air, and another two unlucky dancers got sent packing at the end of it. The judges: Laurieann Gibson, Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe were all on hand to give their critiques. The final 6 dancers were featured tonight. They danced with returning All-Stars from various seasons. Tonight's Live results show kicked off with the final 6 dancers doing another group routine. It featured them dressed up as zombie's and doing a spooky dance number from choreographers Pharside & Phoenix. Right after that, Bailey Munoz and All-Star Koine Iwasaki hit the stage to perform a Broadway routine by choreographer Al Blackstone. Afterwards, Dominic said, "Bailey is an amazing dancer. So, I believed the character and performance." Laurieann said, "I would buy a ticket to any show that Bailey is in." Nigel said, "Bailey is...

Hey, "So You Think You Can Dance" fans. Tonight, July 29, 2019, another episode for this 16th season did indeed air. It revealed who the top five girls are who made it to the Live shows this season! In tonight's episode, each top ten girl was teamed up with an all-star dancer from a previous season to learn a routine outside their style from a choreographer. After that, they had to perform the routine in front of the judges: Lauriann Gibson, Dominic "D-Trix" Sandoval, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe. The judges then decided who all they needed to cut to come out with our top five girls. Contestant Mariah Russell kicked off the performances in tonight's episode. She was given a Salsa routine by choreographer Oksana Platero. Mariah ended up dancing with all star Jonathan Platero from season 5. After her performance, Mary told Mariah, "Your lifts are stunning. You had some real authentic moves.

Just in case you were craving four hours of so-so ballroom dancing in one week, ABC fulfilled that wish on Tuesday with a second night of Dancing With the Stars‘ Season 27 launch.
Actually, let me amend that statement: Only one hour of Tuesday’s broadcast contained brand-new performances and judges’ scores. The first 60 minutes, meanwhile, were mostly filler, including recaps of Monday’s routines and the cast announcement for DWTS: Juniors. (I’m excited about the pint-sized celebs that will be competing, but I’m more jazzed for the pro roster, which includes Sytycd: The Next Generation runner-up J.T.

Jensen Arnold has been a machine all season on “So You Think You Can Dance,” adapting her Latin ballroom technique to every style imaginable, but letting her guard down on stage was more of a challenge. “This dance is 100% dependent on Jensen being vulnerable,” said choreographer Mandy Moore about the routine she was preparing for Arnold and all-star Robert Roldan. “I don’t go to that place a whole lot,” Arnold admitted, but you wouldn’t know it from the finished product. Watch their dance above.
The judges didn’t think she had any difficulty tapping into her softer side. “I just fell in love with that piece,” said Mary Murphy, who added that “the real strength is in your vulnerability, and that’s what you delivered just now.” Nigel Lythgoe “couldn’t help falling in love” with Arnold’s performance. Vanessa Hudgens echoed those sentiments, pointing out that vulnerability “makes you a fuller person,...

Hannahlei Cabanilla has been a favorite of the judges on “So You Think You Can Dance” throughout the season 15 live shows. But she hasn’t yet risen to the top of our predictions for who will win at the end of the season. Going into Monday night’s show when the Top 6 performed she ranked third in our racetrack odds. That could change after another pair of standout performances, including a contemporary routine where she more than held her own with “Sytycd” all-star Marko Germar. Watch it above.
Germar wasn’t the only all-star involved in the routine. It was also the choreographic debut of fan-favorite Robert Roldan. Set to the song “Welcome Home” by Joy Williams, it was full of loss and longing, and though it was full of difficult lifts and transitions, the dancing duo made them look virtually effortless. “It was a week after Charlottesville and there was a lot of angst in the studio with the dancers and the producers,” explains Travis Wall about the “Strange Fruit” routine he choreographed last summer on “So You Think You Can Dance.” “I felt helpless in a way where I wanted to speak louder than I possibly could.” Now he’s nominated for Best Choreography at the Emmys for the eighth year in a row, for that routine as well as for “Change is Everything,” a duet between “Sytycd” all-star Robert Roldan and season 14 contestant Taylor Sieve. Watch our exclusive video interview with Wall above.

“I don’t know how people keep it so cool when they win because I was freaking out,” choreographer Mandy Moore reveals about the moment she won her first Emmy last year at the 2017 Creative Arts ceremony. She had been nominated six times in nine years for her work on “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Dancing with the Stars.” Last year she was actually nominated for both shows, prevailing for “DWTS.” This year she earned her lucky seventh nomination, this time just for “Sytycd,” but her nominated routines could fill an entire category’s worth of dance shows. Watch our exclusive interview with Moore above.
“I wanted to show that I can choreograph group numbers with 100 dancers on location, but then I also can do a duet,” Moore explains. So for the routines she entered as examples of her work she submitted one of each: “To Make You Feel My Love,...

“So You Think You Can Dance” choreographer Mandy Moore has made stars out of countless contestants with her award-winning routines. But when Emmys season rolls around, the question becomes “So You Think You Can Choreograph”?
Since the show began in 2005, it has scored 38 choreography nominations between 15 choreographers. Six of them are Moore’s, including one this year for the contemporary number “To Make You Feel My Love,” featuring Robert Roldan and Taylor Sieve.
What was special about “To Make You Feel My Love”?
I had Robert and Taylor — both incredibly accomplished, beautiful dancers — and it was one of those songs that people know and like, and it was an acoustic version of it, and I was feeling the flow that week. I was emotional that week, and it was the right trifecta of artists and song and moment for me.
Does it get competitive between the choreographers on the show?...

“So You Think You Can Dance” announced its top 20 dancers at the end of “Academy Week” last week, and the 10 men and 10 women who made the cut were overjoyed to be on their way to the live shows … except they weren’t going to the live shows yet. The judges blindsided them by announcing yet another round of cuts that would reduce the top 20 down to the top 10. So the remaining women performed one last time in episode seven on July 23 for a spot in the live shows. So which five advanced, and which five were Thanos-snapped out of existence?
The 10 women who made it this far were Genessy Castillo, Magda Fialek, Jensen Arnold, Stephanie Sosa, Dayna Madison, Sydney Moss, Brianna Penrose, Chelsea Hough, Emily Carr and Hannahlei Cabanilla. For their final challenge to qualify for the live shows, each of them were paired with a “Sytycd” all-star for a...

I don’t think anyone would mistake So You Think You Can Dance‘s 12th season as its strongest — aside from viewers who were trapped in some sort of Footloose-esque, no-grooving-allowed nightmare for its first 11.
But while the Great Stage-Vs.-Street/Jason Derulo-Vs.-Descriptive-Adjectives Experiment of 2015 lacked something in diversity (whatever happened to ballroom and disco?), gut-busting emotional concepts (what I wouldn’t have given for one routine on par with “Addiction Dance“) and insightful critique (Mary Murphy and Misty Copeland, I missed you!), I’d be lying if I said summer TV still wasn’t the better for it.

There've been complaints that last night's American Idol, themed around the hits and performances of past Idol winners, was old-fashioned and schmaltzy. Hey, morons: That's why I watchAmerican Idol. I want ancient, Wayne Newton-y performances from Mormon teenagers in pain. I want the new Rosemary Clooney to woo me in a collared denim dress that her great-grandmother weaved. I want singers who pick songs by Kenny Rogers or Alannah Myles to feel "naughty." Bring me the home-schooled!
I loved last night's episode, even when truly awful songs like Ruben Studdard's "Flying Without Wings" threatened to curbstomp us with hopelessness. For me, ranking the top 10 was a cinch -- though apparently I disagree with most of you about how interesting Angela Miller is. Guys, her emotions range from "happy" to "happy, but quiet sometimes." Choreographer Spencer Liff may be adding Emmy Winner to his resume soon.
Watching the multitude of dances in each season of So You Think You Can Dance, it’s easy to take for granted the amount of work that goes into each routine. Thankfully, many of the choreographers from the Fox series have been recognized with Emmy nominations for their often jaw-dropping routines. One of the show’s regular choreographers, Spencer Liff, was nominated in the Best Choreography category and will find out next month if he'll be taking home one of the gold statues. (Christopher Scott and Stacey Tookey are the other choreographers currently nominated)
We grabbed a few minutes recently with the out Liff to talk about the career he’s been at for 20 years (he’s only 27), why being out and proud is important to him and how he has a definite plan with where he wants his career to take him.

After a groan-inducing two-week hiatus, the glorious So You Think You Can Dance returns tonight for its Top 14 week. This season, the terpsichorean series lost its Thursday night results show, forcing major format changes that include 1) performances and eliminations within the same episode, 2) new "bottom three" rules, and 3) a finale that will crown two winners, one male and one female. And you know what? I think it's working out great so far. Here are the five biggest perks of the new system.
1. Cat Deeley works best under this pressure.
Why is Cat Deeley the greatest host on TV (besides, perhaps, RuPaul)? Because she has that natural Dick Clark-ian awareness of pacing, timing, humor, seriousness, and contestant sympathy. All The Right Moves is basically like So You Think You Can Dance: The College Years. Except, unlike the defunct Saved By The Bell spin-off, Oxygen's new reality show is really good. And for more reasons than simply seeing many of your favorite Sytycd alums (Travis Wall, Nick Lazzarini, Allison Holker, Robert Roldan, Melanie Moore, Jaimie Goodwin and Channing Cooke for starters) dancing in the newly formed Shaping Sounds company.
At its core, Atrm is a story of friendship and watching those bonds strengthen through adversity. A tribulation which plays heavily into tonight's episode as the fallout from last week's Travis-gate (let's call it) is a major centerpiece. I caught up with Nick Lazzarini to talk about that bombshell, what it means for the boys moving forward and what it's been like to live his life in front of the cameras once again!
