"If it's protecting the Earth, why is it coming straight at us?" This looks cool! Samuel Goldwyn Films has revealed an official US trailer for a French adventure movie titled Last Journey of Paul W.R., which originally premiered back in 2020. This is finally getting a US release after two years of waiting. This looks like an epic sci-fi thriller, and the title is an extension of the French version which is just The Last Journey. The red moon threatens our existence on earth. Our only hope is the enigmatic Paul Wr, the most talented astronaut of its generation. But few hours before the start of the Great mission, Paul disappeared. There's all kinds of strange and interesting things going on in this, almost like a dusty, post-apocalyptic Jean-Pierre Jeunet meets Luc Besson kind of film. The cast includes Hugo Becker as Paul W.R., with Jean Reno, Paul Hamy,...

French parable features a ‘red moon’ that provides Earth with fuel, but our last hope refuses a mission to destroy it
This ambitious French sci-fi parable has some quiet moments of beauty and poignancy, but otherwise it’s a long slog – and so bombastic, jejune and ill-considered that it feels far more drawn out than the 87 minutes running time would suggest. In writer-director Romain Quirot’s vision of the future, humanity has worked out how to mine an inexhaustible power supply from an astral object that happens to wander by; it is called, unimaginatively, “the red moon”. This heavenly body appears to be like the living, sentient planet in Stanislaw Lem’s novel Solaris, and our hero Paul Wr (Hugo Becker) can somehow sense that the red moon is quite cross with us earthlings for some reason.
That would appear to be why he refuses to fly a mission to destroy the approaching lunar body,...

If movies and TV are any indication, the future of online dating is very bleak. The streaming service that brought you the “Hang the DJ” episode of “Black Mirror” (which ended up being surprisingly hopeful!) is back with a story about how science and true love maybe weren’t meant to be mixed at all. The French series “Osmosis,” which premieres next month on Netflix, follows a group of participants in a new dating service that uses brainwaves to guarantee finding a soulmate. Some are eager participants, while others remain a little skeptical that a pill and a spot of time in a hallucination dome can bring about magical true love. But, as these things tend to do, it looks like the people in this trial end up giving a little bit more than their personal data when this effort starts to fall apart.

Not only is the “new recruit as audience surrogate” a time-tested method of spy agency stories, but it’s one of the simplest ways to get a literal foot in the door on a TV show. In the case of the French comedy “A Very Secret Service” (released in the United States as a Netflix Original), young counterintelligence newcomer André Merlaux (Hugo Becker) gets to be the doe-eyed conscience of a show where international diplomacy gets tossed around like manila folders full of classified material.

With the issue of suicide never shied away from, Whit Stillman’s Damsels In Distress is set against a backdrop of pain and suffering that is masked by whimsy and social judgment to produce a film that never dwells for longer than it needs to.
With the opening credits reminiscent of a Woody Allen flick alongside the inclusion of chapters and footnotes to the closing credits, the director’s presence is often felt, especially in how suicide is never treated as taboo but as an everyday part of human life. Though the overriding light-hearted humour ensures we are constantly aware this is a comedy first and drama second, Damsels In Distress utilises its comedy and throwaway charm (the tap dancing goes hand in hand with Fred Astaire’s 1937 musical, A Damsel In Distress) as a coping device for the personal – albeit rather frustratingly hidden – dramas at its core.

Director: Whit Stillman Writer: Whit Stillman Starring: Greta Gerwig, Analeigh Tipton, Carrie MacLemore, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Ryan Metcalf, Adam Brody, Billy Magnussen, Jermaine Crawford, Caitlin Fitzgerald, Zach Woods, Domenico D'Ippolito, Nick Blaemire, Aubrey Plaza, Hugo Becker, Meredith Hagner It should say something to us that Seven Oaks College utilizes the Roman alphabet rather than the more commonly accepted Greek alphabet in the naming of their sorority and fraternity houses, as this references the Romans' propensity for crude decadence over the Greeks' philosophical pursuits. Propagated by doofi (the plural of doofus), the fraternities of Seven Oaks have de-evolved into a state of idiocracy; the situation is so grim that two male characters do not even know the names of the basic colors. (Did writer-director Whit Stillman's name of one of these dimwits Thor [Billy Magnussen] as a reference to the Norse god or the Avenger?) We can only assume that this fictional New...

Whit Stillman is a name that has not been seen on a cinema screen for sometime. His latest, the delightful Damsels in Distress, is his first film since The Last Days of Disco in 1998.
I have a lot of affection for Whit Stillman’s films and was overjoyed to discover, upon viewing Damsels in Distress at a surprise screening last year, that his return to filmmaking after 14 years away is up to the high standard I have come to expect. Also, rather excitingly, Damsels is something of a new direction for Stillman and one that I was more than happy to follow him in.
I therefore leapt at the chance to speak to Stillman when the opportunity arose and managed to speak to him about a number of topics, including Damsels, his previous work and future possibilities. You can read the first part of this interview below, which focuses on Damsels in Distress.

Chicago – The sly satires of Whit Stillman have cultivated a fan base that appears to consist largely of his fellow peers. Manhattan-based filmmakers such as Wes Anderson, Noah Baumbach and Lena Dunham have cited his subdued comedies as an influence on their own similarly mannerist yet considerably more accessible work. For many moviegoers, Stillman’s brilliantly constructed, emotionally distant pictures are easy to admire but difficult to like.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The young, upwardly mobile “urban haute bourgeoisie” that populate his films serve as the target for Stillman’s observational, deeply affectionate humor. These characters may have big vocabularies and even bigger egos, but they are ultimately no less vulnerable and naive than their fellow peers in the lower social classes. I’ll never forget the hilarious scene in Stillman’s best film, 1998’s “The Last Days of Disco,” where a group of twentysomethings utilize their long-winded skills of analyses to pick...

Chicago – It takes a special kind of talent to appear wholly natural on-camera. Delivering dialogue with dramatic inflection is easy. But the ability to say scripted words as if they are emanating from your soul is profoundly tricky, especially when the words are written by an instantly recognizable stylist the likes of Woody Allen or Whit Stillman.

Freeing Blair from her royal ties was too big of a task for Georgina Sparks to handle -- she had to bring Chuck into the picture. A few episodes back Georgina Sparks (Michelle Tractenberg) was set out on a mission: end the marriage of Blair (Leighton Meester) and Prince Louis' (Hugo Becker). And that she did, but she wasn't alone. She had the help of Blair's ex/true love Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick). Yes, that's right Gossipers - Chuck paid Blair's dowry! Exactly what she didn't want him to do, but he did -- selflessly -- because he just wants her to be happy. Now, that is true love. But -- of course -- Blair is so blinded by who knows what that she couldn't see that Chuck didn't have any ulterior motives by paying her dowry -- he just wanted to do something nice for her. So, when Dan...

The likable Adam Brody and Hugo Becker supply the male support in the new femme-centric film "Damsels in Distress," from writer-director Whit Stillman. HitFix caught up with the duo, who spend a large chunk of the interview discussing the film's somewhat enigmatic auteur. "Damsels" is the indie filmmaking icon's first film in more than a decade, although Brody says that Stillman wasn't very forthcoming with his reasons for his long break from making movies. Becker elucidates (sort of) by saying that the perfectionist writer-director spend years in Europe honing multiple scripts and trying to raise capital for "Damsels" and future films. ...

So “The Hunger Games” is still doing quite well, “Wrath of the Titans” is performing tolerably, but looking to ripple the waters this weekend is the behemoth of behemoth blockbuster movies, “Titanic (in 3D),” which (re)opened on Wednesday. It will again make James Cameron a boatload of money (Ha) so he can buy another submarine or whatever he uses his money for. Not a bad life, Cameron, not bad at all. Oh, and some other movies opened as well, in the event that you’re in the mood for something other than a large-budget epic with sick CGI. Thrillers, indie comedies, and dramedies set in Vatican City abound this week: sit back, relax, and “never let go, Jack.” (I'm so sorry for that. I just couldn’t resist.)
As summer creeps closer, so do the blockbusters, and “American Reunion,” fourth in the “American Pie” series, is here to help ring in the season.

This is a reprint of our review from Tiff.
From the moment the Sony Pictures Classics logo pops up not in the usual blue -- but in cupcake frosting pink -- you know that Whit Stillman's first film in 13 years (!) is going to be something special. While word from Venice -- where the film closed the festival before heading to Tiff -- was good, the question to be answered was whether or not Stillman's style and cinematic persona would stand up in a filmmaking landscape that has changed immensely since "Last Days of Disco." Well, let there be no doubt: Stillman is just as enjoyable as when we last met him those many years ago, and "Damsels In Distress" finds the director with lots (and lots and lots) left to say.

Greta Gerwig keeps getting to mark names off of her director checklist. And it’s a pretty good list. There’s the Duplass Brothers, Noah Baumbach and, most recently, Whit Stillman and Woody Allen. To the surprise of some fans, Gerwig also recently branched out into larger budget studio fare with “No Strings Attached” and “Arthur.” But not to worry. The actress says she’s learned the bigger movies are a way to keep the smaller movies coming, at least as soon as studios figure out a way to best position her unique acting attributes.
In “Damsels in Distress,” Gerwig plays the hopelessly hopeful Violet Wister, the leader of a group of beautiful damsels who hope to raise the level of an East Coast College’s social standards. Oh, and Violet also hopes to launch a worldwide dance craze while she’s at it. Directed and written by Stillman, 'Damsels'...

Yes, it’s been a while since Whit Stillman released a film. But that story has already been done to death. The important fact is that Stillman is back, rejuvenated, and from the sound of our recent interview, looking to get back in the saddle again soon.
While “Damsels in Distress” may appear on the surface to share similarities with the likes of “Heathers” or “Mean Girls,” as has been the case with Stillman’s past films, it’s best not to approach his work with any preconceived notions. The only assurance is that it will be distinctly Stillman. As Violet Wister, Greta Gerwig leads a group of sophisticated female do-gooders at an East Coast College. Their goals are simply to elevate the lives of those around them, both in terms of their scholarly and social ambitions. 'Gossip Girl' fans, don't give up hope yet! Executive Producer Joshua Safran and Jake Coburn reveal in this new video that next week's episode will give Chair And Dair fans a lot to talk about! Perhaps Blair will have a change of heart for good? The only obstacle keeping Blair (Leighton Meester) from moving forward with Dan-- or back to Chuck -- is her prenup with Louis (Hugo Becker). And in this new preview her beloved stepdad Cyrus (Wallace Shawn) may have found a way around it! This, of course, is good news because it means Blair's feelings for Dan (Penn Badgley) and Chuck (Ed Westwick) will truly be tested because there will finally be nothing to stop her. And even though on the Feb. 20 episode Blair chose Dan and even received Serena's (Blake Lively) blessing, Chuck is not out of the picture. Jake Coburn, Gossip Girl co-producer,...

Gossip Girl, you know I love you but we have to talk. I've been a longtime fan of yours but the current fifth season really isn't your gossipy best. I say this with all my Xoxo but it's hard to change without talking about the problems.
So let's talk about the issues plaguing the fifth season of this scandalous CW favorite. I want to put in my disclaimer here and note that I actually have loved and continue to love Gossip Girl a great deal. I went into the show in the first season entirely because my roommates were excited to watch it. By the end of that season I was the one obsessed with the show, buying headbands and referring to my friends only by their first initials. Needless to say, they really regretted getting me hooked on Gossip Girl.

Here's the first trailer to a new film written and directed by Whit Stillman called Damsels in Distress. The movie is a quirky kind of indie comedy that stars Greta Gerwig, Adam Brody, Analeigh Tipton, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Carrie MacLemore, Hugo Becker, Billy Magnussen, Ryan Metcalf, Jermaine Crawford, and Aubrey Plaza.

Anyone who remembers the 1990 indie comedy/drama Metropolitan can recall the dry humor and charm that began writer-director Whit Stillman's storied, yet not very prolific, career. Metropolitan was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay, and his following two movies — 1994's Barcelona and 1998's The Last Days of Disco — seemed to herald that Stillman was going to continue to be one of the more intelligent independent filmmakers for years to come. However, Stillman's latest movie, Damsels in Distress, is his first in 14 years.
