Have a yen for the music, style and glamour of ’60s Swinging London? Edgar Wright’s hybrid time capsule / music extravaganza / horror thriller is an audiovisual delight from one end to the other. Young women from different decades seek to conquer London by different means — they meet as soul twins in a ghost world, where bloodsoaked murders haunt their dreams. Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy are the psychic twins; stars Rita Tushingham, Terence Stamp and the late Diana Rigg bring the authenticity. Soho can boast the most creatively ‘alive’ visuals of 2021.

For years we’ve been hearing that writer/director Joe Cornish and actor John Boyega have been talking about making a sequel to their 2011 alien invasion film Attack the Block (watch it Here). The project was officially announced last year – and now Boyega has revealed to the folks at Collider that he and Cornish have been crafting the story for Attack the Block 2 together.
Boyega said,
The story has actually been presented by myself and Joe Cornish. We’ve collaborated heavily on making a story that makes sense for Moses and the other characters, and the new characters that will be coming up in the sequel too. And then, also, there’s different perspectives in writing it, with Joe having his perspective and me having mine. Director Edgar Wright and writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns told the audience at Contenders London today that bringing their own experiences of living in London was integral to the making of their upcoming Focus Features pic Last Night In Soho.
“In the 27 years I lived in London, I spent more time in Soho than any sofa or any flat that I’ve ever lived in,” said Wright, before adding that filming in the London district was a “difficult” area to shoot in.
“It’s the only area of London that is essentially 24/7,” he said. “But we wanted to take the bull by the horns and shoot not just the modern day stuff in Soho but also the 1960s scenes in Soho as well.”
Writer Wilson-Cairns noted that she infused a lot of her own experiences as a woman in London, such as the “horrendous pickup line in the bar” and “the creepy taxi driver” to the script.

Have you ever noticed how the icily dramatic opening strings in “You’re My World,” Cilla Black’s earnest, bawling-on-the-bathroom-floor ballad from 1965, could just as easily be a shivery horror theme by Bernard Herrmann? Edgar Wright has, and uses the likeness to briefly spine-tingling effect early in “Last Night in Soho”: As ’60s-fixated Gen-z fashion student Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie) finds herself somehow transported in time to the Swinging London world of naive party girl and aspiring chanteuse Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy), those strings signal not just the dreamy collision of timelines, but a darkening of tone and genre, as Eloise’s rosy nostalgia for an era she never inhabited is soon invaded by blood-dripping violence and threat.

Leave it to Edgar Wright to play with genre expectations and deliver yet another delightfully off-kilter thriller that also thrills with its undeniably trippy atmosphere and blast to the past of swinging 60’s London. The director of films like Baby Driver, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, The World’s End, and of course the cult classic Shaun Of The Dead has taken the seemingly glamorous and intriguing era of the 60s in Mod London circa ’65 and turned it into an increasingly menacing and dark period, but still fueled by a killer song selection that takes us from Cilla Black to Petula Clark. It is a mix that has you in its first half longing to go back to that period in time like protagonist Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie) , but then maybe rethink that decision. Just like many of Wright’s twisty movies he doesn’t easily let the audience off the hook.

An aspiring fashion designer finds herself trapped in a time-loop in the trailer for Edgar Wright’s upcoming psychological thriller, Last Night in Soho, set to arrive October 22nd.
The film stars Thomasin McKenzie as Eloise, a young student who moves to London to pursue fashion design, but soon finds herself lonely and out of place. After mysteriously traveling back to 1966, however, Eloise finds herself embodying a wannabe singer named Sandy, played by Anya Taylor-Joy.
While the trailer first finds Eloise relishing the glamor of the swinging Sixties, the clip’s tone grows increasingly sinister.

The long-awaited trailer for Edgar Wright’s “Last Night in Soho” is here, and it’s a delirious, colorful and nightmarish journey that follows “The Queen’s Gambit” star Anya Taylor-Joy through 1960s London.
This is Wright’s first departure away from comedy and action and into the realm of neo-noir, psychological thrills and horror. The first look at the film already hints at a stylized head trip — Wright fans have noticed that “Last Night in Soho’s” stark colored lighting, glistening effects and spiraling camera pay homage to Henri-Georges Clouzot’s 1964 French art house film “Inferno.”

Edgar Wright is currently working on a psychological horror-thriller called Last Night in Soho. The plot of the film has been shrouded in secrecy, but little bits and pieces have teased a little of what we can expect.
What we have known is that the story is set in London’s Soho district during the 1960s. There are also parts of the film that will be set in modern day. We now know how the past and the present will collide thanks to the director. During an interview with Empire, Wright revealed that there’s a time travel element in the story.
When talking about the modern day character played by Thomasin McKenzie, the filmmaker said: “There’s something I have in common with the lead character in that I’m afflicted with nostalgia for a decade I didn’t live in.” The period McKenzie is nostalgic for is obviously the 1960s,...

Edgar Wright announced in September he had wrapped production on his upcoming new movie “Last Night in Soho,” but to this day the film remains something of a mystery. Both Wright and distributor Focus Features have been incredibly tight-lipped about the movie’s plot. Only a London setting and a cast list has been confirmed, with “The Witch” favorite Anya Taylor-Joy, “The Crown” and “Doctor Who” veteran Matt Smith, and “Leave No Trace” breakout Thomasin McKenzie heading the ensemble. Fortunately, Wright has pulled back the curtain on the “Last Night in Soho” plot in the new issue of Empire magazine.
Empire reporter Ben Travis writes that “much of Wright’s movie takes place in the London of the Swinging Sixties; a time period with which his lead character, Thomasin McKenzie’s Eloise, is obsessed and, through a mysterious connection with Taylor-Joy’s character, gets to experience.”

Director Edgar Wright has shared a photo giving us a first look at his upcoming psychological horror-thriller Last Night in Solo. We don’t know much about the film, but we do know that it’s set in London’s Soho district and will also take place in the 1960s and modern day.
The photo features actress Thomasin McKenzie, one of two female leads in the film, and she looks absolutely horrified by something. The photo also comes with the announcement that the film has wrapped production.
The movie also stars Anya Taylor-Joy (Split), who will play a character in the 1960s set part of the film. McKenzie, is said to star in the modern-day scenes as a fashion student. We don’t know how these characters are connected or what the reason is behind the story being set in two different time periods.

Attack The Block Blu-RaySony Home Entertainment2011/Rated R/Running Time 88 minsList Price: $35.99 -- Available October 25, 2011John Carpenter once said that when a filmmaker has limited resources, the more creative they are. In an age where most films that stand a chance of making an impact at the box-office have already been backed by millions upon millions of dollars, its rare to see low budget features at all, let alone a good one. It remains to be seen whether or not Joe Cornish's Attack the Block will make an impact at the box-office, but it definitely has the makings of a cult classic. His incredibly funny, exciting and inspiring action-horror-comedy features a simple story with performances that go above and beyond most big budget f/x pictures. At times one can feel the budget restraints of the production, yet they are not flaws, just enjoyable quirks that work surprisingly well in service of the experience.

Chicago – Here’s a directorial debut made with such an assured sense of style and craft that one wishes it were more fun. All the ingredients are here for a splendid cult classic: deadpan gags, live-action aliens, a fresh-faced ensemble and R-rated violence all wrapped in the blessings of Edgar Wright and Nick Frost. Yet “Attack the Block” sounds a lot more fun on paper that it is in execution.
For all of its considerable charms, the picture is irrevocably marred by the least likable protagonists in recent memory. The blame cannot be placed on the young actors, who are all game and energetic. It’s the script by first-time feature director Joe Cornish that lets them down. As a cinematic rule of thumb, it’s generally a bad sign when viewers start growing impatient over waiting for the so-called heroes to get killed off.
