"Can't stop now, it's the role of a lifetime." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Playing God, a film from writer / director Scott Brignac. It's debuting in August despite not showing up at any festivals before. A brother & sister con-artist duo find themselves scamming a grieving billionaire by convincing him they can introduce him to God, face-to-face. They recruit their mentor, and together the three of them attempt the biggest con of their lives. The film stars Hannah Kasulka & Luke Benward as the con siblings, also joined by Michael McKean, Jude Demorest, Marc Menchaca, plus Alan Tudyk. This actually looks like a great heist film, might be an undiscovered gem. Especially with the tease when he finally sits down with "God" - yeah this film seems much more clever and grand than I was expecting at first. Here's the official trailer (+ posters) for Scott Brignac's Playing God,...

Canceled Fox musical drama “Star” appears to be making a comeback – as a televised movie, according to co-creator Lee Daniels.
“The bad news is that ‘Star’ is not getting picked up for series,” said Daniels in a video post on Instagram, calling the explanation “too long of a story to cry about.”
“The good news is: we’re doing a movie of the week to wrap things up for you all,” he said, adding, “We’re going to make something real special for you to scream about, with all of our cast members – even the dead ones.”

Co-created by Daniels and Tom Donaghy, the show was produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Lee Daniels Entertainment. A drama series, Star follows the story of three talented young female singers and their rise to fame. The cast includes Queen Latifah, Brandy Norwood, Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, and Brittany O’Grady. Meanwhile, Lethal Weapon is a series adaptation of the film franchise and stars Damon Wayans and Seann William Scott as two very different kinds of detectives who are paired together by the Lapd.

The cancellation of musical drama Star was a “tough choice” for Fox but came as it wanted to give Empire the “send-off it deserves”.
Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier told Deadline that the Star cancellation was tied in to the fact that it wanted to prioritize Empire as it moves into its sixth and final season.
Speaking on Fox’s upfronts press call, Collier said, “We looked at our priorities and were trying to prioritize giving Empire the send-off it deserves. The move [of Empire] to 9pm, made it a challenge because Star was always the lead-out from Empire and obviously we don’t have the 10pm hour, so it was another tough choice in a year where we were prioritizing Empire and obviously some of the other shows that we’ve put on the schedule.”

“Star” has been canceled after three seasons at Fox.
The musical drama from Lee Daniels and Tom Donaghy told the story of three girls’ rise to fame. It starred Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, Brittany O’Grady, Queen Latifah, Quincy Brown and Amiyah Scott.
Daniels, Pamela Oas Williams and Karin Gist were executive producers; Gist was also the showrunner. The series was a production of 20th Century Fox Television in association with Lee Daniels Entertainment.
The show was one of two Daniels had at Fox, the other being “Empire.” “Empire” was recently renewed for a sixth season despite the controversy surrounding series star Jussie Smollett. Smollet’s contract with the show has been extended but there are currently no plans for him to return for the show’s new season.
Earlier today, Fox also canceled freshman drama “The Passage” and comedy “The Cool Kids,” while “Lethal Weapon” was also canceled after three seasons.

Fox no longer has Star in its eyes: The network has cancelled the Empire companion series after three seasons, TVLine has learned.
In its third season, the Atlanta-based drama — which starred Queen Latifah, Brandy Norwood, Jude Demorest, Brittany O’Grady, Ryan Destiny, Amiyah Scott, Quincy Brown and Luke James — averaged 3.5 million viewers and a 1.06 demo rating (in Live+Same Day numbers). That’s down from Season 2’s 4.1 mil/1.3 average, while the show hit series lows as recently as May 1.
The Season 3 finale — which aired on Wednesday — ended on a major cliffhanger, with multiple lives hanging in the balance.

Fox’s music drama Star has been canceled after three seasons. Its producing studio, former Fox sibling 20th Century Fox TV, is already shopping it to other platforms.
Star’s cancellation is not unexpected. As we noted in our story yesterday on Fox’s decision to pick up four new drama series, with a fifth pending, the move did not bode well for the network’s bubble dramas Star, Lethal Weapon and The Passage. All of them were canceled today.
Created by Lee Daniels and Tom Donaghy, Star followed three talented singers – running from their pasts and desperate for a new start – with ambitions of stardom, as they navigate the cutthroat music business.
The series spent most of its run paired with Fox’s hip-hop family drama Empire. Family soap pilot Filthy Rich, whose series pickup at Fox is pending, is being eyed as a companion for Empire.
