Deadline reports that Paramount and MGM have teamed for a musical remake 1983's Valley Girl. The original film is a slice of 80's nostalgia with a nice mix of New Wave music and valley talk. It is the film that helped launch Nicolas Cage's acting career. The remake will be helmed by commercial director Clay Weiner.
This version of Valley Girl will still "follow the original story of a punk guy with no money from the wrong side of the tracks who sets his sights on winning the affection of a Valley girl with a loutishly preppy boyfriend." The remake will feature the actors singing songs from bands like The Go Go’s and The Cars. The long-gestating project has now been put on the fast track at MGM. Amy Talkington wrote the first draft of the script that is now being rewritten by Jenny Lumet (Rachel Getting Married...

They're remaking the 1983 Nicolas Cage movie Valley Girl. But it will inevitably be stupid because The Valley practically doesn't even exist anymore.
Valley Girl is set in The Valley (which you probably don't even know where that is unless you live in Los Angeles) in the early '80s and features some of the best alternative and pop music from that era of any film made during the same time. It's one of the few films in which Nicolas Cage is sober and actually not obnoxious; in fact, he's endearing. It's a wonderful film, and I'm so sad to say it's going to be remade with some brand new young people who look like 30-year-old retired models and will be a Musical instead of having good music in it.
Some guy named Clay Weiner (huhuhuhuhuh) is going to be in charge of it, and he got the okay to do it from MGM,...

We’re going to get this out of the way and, like, totally quickly – I love Valley Girl. Unironically. I think it’s hilarious and weirdly romantic and that Nicolas Cage has never, ever looked better (and sexier). And also? The music is phenomenal (Cage’s Randy is really into the underground punk scene). And all that embarrassing praise and all those bizarre personal revelations aside, what made Valley Girl work is that it chronicled a specific lifestyle during the actual period in which it existed – that is, the “for sure, totally, tripendicular” slice of life California life during the 80s. A remake? Well, I worry that a remake is just going to poke fun at the time period, not look back on it with any sort of endearing nostalgia. MGM has been working to get a remake going for awhile now, and apparently Paramount is getting in on the action. According...

MGM has risen from the ashes of bankruptcy to partner with Paramount on a remake of the 1983 Nicolas Cage movie Valley Girl, but there's a twist: this one's going to be a musical. Little-known director Clay Weiner wowed studio executives by producing a self-financed demo reel over the holiday break, which featured choreographed dance numbers to music that will be used in the movie. It impressed the suits so much that they gave him the job over his better-established competition. This is a real life lesson for you up-and-coming filmmakers out there: sometimes all it takes is going the extra mile. More details below! If you've never heard of Clay Weiner, you're not alone. He's built a career mostly directing commercials, and he ventured into features once before with the made-for-tv film Fred: The Movie for Nickelodeon. Deadline says this version of Valley Girl follows the original story of ...

Clay Weiner, a successful director of TV commercials who also directed Nickelodeon.s Fred: The Movie, has been chosen by Paramount and MGM to helm their planned musical remake of the 1983 movie Valley Girl, a largely forgettable dramedy that helped launch Nicolas Cage.s career. Deadline, which breaks the story, says Weiner won the job over .a number of well-established helmers who wanted the job.. Weiner apparently won studio execs over with a three-minute reel he paid for out of his own pocket that showed how he planned to choreograph new dance routines to classic .80s songs from the film (and the era). The site says the remake will follow the plot of the original . with a punk rocker from the city trying to win the heart of a shallow girl from the Valley . and will showcase mash-up tunes from bands like The Go-Gos and The Cars. While everyone was focused on New Jersey passing marriage equality yesterday, in my home state of West Virginia, Del. John Doyle introduced a civil unions bill in the legislature that is an "everything but the name" bill. In all honesty, I'm unsure how I feel about that – we have a statute defining marriage as a man and a woman, not an amendment, and we can't pass a nondiscrimination law. This may not be the attention we want. Still, yay, us!
Also locally, Stephen Skinner, head of Fairness Wv, our only Glbt organization, resigned today to pursue a candidacy for the House of Delegates.

Paramount and MGM are teaming for a musical remake of 1983 romantic comedy "Valley Girl" which commercials director Clay Weiner will make his feature directorial debut on says Deadline.
The original followed a Hollywood punk (Nicolas Cage) with no money who sets his sights on winning the affection of a popular and pretty Valley girl (Deborah Foreman) with a loutishly preppy boyfriend (Michael Bowen) .
This musical version has the actors singing 80's New Wave tunes from bands like The Go Go’s and The Cars. Jenny Lumet ("Rachel Getting Married") is currently re-writing Amy Talkington's script.
Weiner reportedly put together a three-minute demo reel, paid for out of his own pocket, which helped him score the gig.

MGM’s near-bankruptcy from a few years back must have really shook them to their core, because ever since they came roaring (sigh) back they’ve been trying to remake nearly everything in their library from Robocop to Carrie to even the recently announced Death Wish.
Add another cog to the MGM Remake machine; Deadline reports that the studio, in conjunction with Paramount, are unleashing a remake of the 80′s classic Valley Girl, which helped change the lexicon of our country as well as jump started the career of Nicolas Cage. But this isn’t just a straight up remake because that would be too easy; instead MGM is turning Valley Girl into a musical in the same vein as the upcoming Rock of Ages where instead of exerting any creativity, they’re just optioning 80′s songs and having the cast sing them instead. Great. Didn’t we stop caring about the 80′s yet?...

Was there something in the air? Maybe. While the 1983 flick "Valley Girl" was (until now) a relic of particular kind of movie, from a particular era, the film is not without its legion of fans and is know for being an early breakout role for a young Nicolas Cage. Last summer, Kevin Smith hit the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York to screen the film and host a talk afterward with the film's director Martha Coolidge. It was a surprisingly fascinating talk, full of many revelations (read our recap here) and so it seems that in the power corridors of Hollywood, there are some fans as well, as the movie is headed for remake. Paramount and MGM have dusted off the movie and tasked Clay Weiner to helm to the redo. Huh? As Deadline reveals, the helmer is a commercials director whose best known credits are that Super...

Exclusive: Paramount has joined MGM’s effort to mount a musical film remake of 1983′s Valley Girl, the film that helped launch the career of Nicolas Cage. The remake will launch a new feature directing career, as the studios chose Clay Weiner over a number of well-established helmers who wanted the job. Who is Clay Weiner and how did this happen? Weiner is a prolific commercials director — he helmed the Super Bowl spot for Time Warner Cable with Ricky Gervais and Mary Louise Parker — but his only real credit is the Nickelodeon film Fred: The Movie. He was determined to win the Valley Girl job, and his reps were able to include him among a bunch of helmers who met with studio executives before the holiday. Weiner was the only one who spent the two-week holiday break putting together a three-minute demo reel, paid for out of his own pocket,...

Usually when a movie is remade into a musical on the big screen, it has already gone through an evolutionary step on stage (see: Hairspray). But Paramount and MGM have decided to skip the theatre part of the equation, shoving a tune-filled version of the 1983 comedy Valley Girl into development. And now it has a director, with Clay Weiner winning the job.Weiner doesn’t exactly have the greatest cinematic CV – his one credit is 2010’s Fred: The Movie, based off of the YouTube videos created by Lucas Cruikshank, which is an object lesson in why some ‘net sensations really shouldn’t make the leap to film. But the director also boasts a lengthy and successful commercials credit list, and he was willing to go the extra mile to snag the Valley Girl job ahead of other, more experienced filmmakers. When given the chance to present his ideas, he self-funded...

Tron: Legacy (PG)
(Joseph Kosinski, 2010, Us) Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde. 125 mins
Less a brand-new vision of the future than an upgrade of the old one, this reboot delivers digital thrills beyond your wildest electric dreams, but ties itself in knots with an analogue-era plot. There's sleek, sexy design, gladiatorial arcade game action and Daft Punk-scored retro styling, but questions pile up as Hedlund seeks to rescue his long-lost Zen-spouting dad (old Jeff Bridges) from Tron-world and its evil techno-führer (young Jeff Bridges).

A rags-to-riches showbiz fable that makes Mariah Carey's Glitter look self-effacing and Showgirls avant garde. The mask of Cher presides over a bitchy La club where Aguilera's talent for warbling while modelling frilly lingerie eventually shines through.

Back in March, we reported that 20th Century Fox was working on a film based on the E-Trade talking babies that have been appearing in the company's marketing campaign. THR has now learned that the story will follow a group of babies that break out of their day-care room to find another infant before he makes it outside. A similar storyline to Pixar's "Toy Story 3." The script that Katie Dippold ("Parks and Recreation") wrote is being thrown out and the studio is now looking for a new screenwriter to take the movie in a more G-rated direction. Meanwhile, Clay Weiner (Fred: The Movie) will be directing.

Any kid in daycare knows that, at some point, you want to escape. 20th Century Fox will give kids a little satisfaction with their baby breakout of daycare movie. Inspired by the E-Trade commercials that stars a talking baby, "Parks and Recreation" writer Katie Dippold's take has the babies escaping their daycare room to retrieve another crawler before he gets outside of the facility. Former Fox exec Peter Chernin is producing and "Fred: The Movie" director Clay Weiner will direct.

Fred is the biggest star on YouTube. His channel was the first in the site's history to hit a million subscribers. One of his videos, "Fred Tries to Ride a Bike," has been viewed 14.5 million times; that's a million more viewers than HBO had for the premiere of "Boardwalk Empire."
And until last week, I had never heard of this guy.
Why? Because Fred is a phenomenon amongst kids and I am a very, very old man (at least by their standards). So how's it play for a fogie who doesn't "get" Fred?

More news today in the ever evolving saga of web series star Fred and his Hollywood exploits as Fred: The Movie has been picked up by Nickelodeon. 16 year-old Fred creator and star Lucas Cruikshank is the titular protag in the comedy now headed for cable as a TV movie. Speculation of a theatrical release ended as this deal was announced, though as Variety reports, a sequel could head to theaters if it performs well on Nick. Our coverage of this YouTuber Movie began as curiosity, as we caught their casting notice sneaking out on Breakdowns. As the story spread, then came speculation over which “cameo name” is playing Fred’s dad. And then somehow we found ourselves bargain hunting in Silver Lake with the film’s Art Department at 7 on a Sunday morning. For the record, we scored a bunch of props from this movie that we’ll give away at some point.
