NBC’s “Ordinary Joe” and Fox’s “The Big Leap” are being dropped by their respective networks after airing only one season.
TheWrap has learned that Fox loved “The Big Leap” and saw it as an aspirational story, but it didn’t draw strong viewership numbers with an average 0.4/2 L7 and 2.8 million multiplatform viewers.
Based on a U.K. reality format, the Scott Foley-starring dramedy “The Big Leap” was described as “an innovative show-within-a-show that takes viewers on a journey of self-acceptance, body-positivity and empowerment at any age” and “a modern tale about second chances and chasing your dreams and taking back what’s yours.”
Created by “Deception” mastermind and “Friday Night Lights” alum Liz Heldens, it followed “a group of diverse, down-on-their-luck characters attempting to change their lives by participating in a potentially life-ruining reality dance show that builds to a live production of Swan Lake. The Big Leap has performed for the last time at Fox.
The feel-good dramedy has been canceled after one season, Deadline reports.
The project is inspired by the UK docuseries Big Ballet and follows a group of diverse, down-on-their-luck characters attempting to change their lives by participating in a potentially life-ruining reality dance show that builds to a live production of Swan Lake.
What this group of underdogs lack in dance training, they make up for with their edge, wit, and desire to reimagine an iconic story to fit their own mold.
It was a modern tale about second chances and chasing your dreams and taking back what’s yours.
The cast included Scott Foley, Simone Recasner, Ser’Darius Blain, Jon Rudnitsky, Raymond Cham Jr., Mallory Jansen, Kevin Daniels, Piper Perabo, and Teri Polo.
While the show was one of the most well-received broadcast dramas in years, it failed to catch on in traditional ratings.

The Scott Foley-led drama “The Big Leap” has been canceled after just one season at Fox, Variety has learned.
A modern tale about second chances, chasing your dreams and taking back what’s yours,”The Big Leap” revolves around a group of diverse, down-on-their-luck characters attempting to change their lives by participating in a potentially life-ruining reality dance show featuring a modern reimagining of “Swan Lake.”
“The Big Leap” starred Scott Foley, Teri Polo, Piper Perabo, Simone Recasner, Kevin Daniels, Ser’Darius Blain, Jon Rudnitsky, Mallory Jansen and Anna Grace Barlow.
The drama from creator/executive producer Liz Heldens, director/executive producer Jason Winer and executive producer Sue Naegle premiered as part of Fox’s fall lineup. It averaged a 0.4 rating among the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic and 2.8 million multiplatform viewers throughout its 11-episode run in Nielsen’s Live + Same Day data, which counts a week’s worth of delayed viewing where available.

Fox has opted not to proceed with a second season of The Big Leap. The ballet drama-comedy, starring Scott Foley and Simone Recasner, had an 11-episode freshman run, which ended in December, with the network at the time deferring a decision on the show’s future until the spring.
It is one of two Fox freshman dramas on the bubble after soft limited runs, along with Our Kind Of People, which I hear looks promising for a second season due to a strong showing on Fox’s streamer Tubi.
With its music, stage performances and aspirational themes, The Big Leap was a favorite of Fox brass during the development process and arrived with a strong pre-launch buzz, drawing parallels to Fox’s breakout hit Glee.

The Big Leap wrapped its first season on Fox on Monday night and, despite low ratings, the show's creator/showrunner Liz Heldens is hoping the series will return for a second season. Updated: Fox just released its midseason schedule, and it does not include the network’s new fall 2020 scripted series, dramas The Big Leap and Our Kind of People. The Big Leap will end its freshman run of 11 episodes, while Our Kind Of People’s first season consists of 12 episodes.
Sources indicate that both The Big Leap, starring Scott Foley and Simone Recasner, and Our Kind of People, headlined by Yaya DaCosta, had been designed for shorter runs, which explains the lack of back orders. Fox is expected to make a decision on the series’ future in the spring.
Both The Big Leap and Our Kind of People launched to high expectations, with the ballet drama-comedy drawing parallels to Fox’s breakout hit Glee, and the soapy Our Kind of People, executive produced by Lee Daniels, evoking comparisons to the Lee-co-created Empire, which had a very successful run on the network.

In the perfect world, our favorite angry ballerina would've taken that cane and done unspeakable things to Curtis' dangly bits, but alas, the world is not a perfect place.
We learn the identity of Sam's father on The Big Leap Season 1 Episode 5, and it didn't disappoint, per se, but rather enranged.
But Gabby is strong, resilient, and Simone Recasner is everything.
But first, let's take a moment to appreciate how freaking delightful Simon is as a character. He brings so much joy to everyone around him and is the very definition of good vibes only.
Presumably, we'll get a more centric Simon installment where they open with some pivotal point in his life, and it'll be satisfying. He's shared bits and pieces about his life here and there, but we need more.
What lies behind this proud, upbeat, compassionate, loving man? How does one person exude so much wholesomeness and...

Welcome to our weekly column Can’t Miss Episode of the Week! Every Saturday we’ll be spotlighting a different episode of television from that week that we thought was exceptional and a must-see. Check back to see if your favorite show got the nod — or to learn about a new one! If Ted Lasso winning all of those Emmys this past Sunday doesn’t prove that we’re all searching for some feel-good TV, then I don’t know what does. One new Fall show that seems to be aiming in this direction is The Big Leap, which premiered on Monday, September 20 on Fox. Centered around a dance-themed reality show, an ensemble of quirky underdogs audition in the hopes that it can be their second chance at joy and success. It’s an undeniably hopeful premise, and the pilot enthusiastically follows through on that set-up. Newcomer Simone Recasner is wonderful as single mom Gabby,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched the series premiere of “The Big Leap.”
“The Big Leap,” the title of Simone Recasner’s new television series, has multiple meanings for the rising star. It is the name of the reality dance competition within the show, on which the main characters are competing, in the Fox dramedy, and it also refers to the chance they are taking in being a part of the show at all. “The Big Leap” is Recasner’s first major acting role, reflecting the way her own life is about to change as she appears on screens in millions of homes across the country.
“Being new to the form of filmmaking, the ebbs and flows of set life has been a big adjustment for me,” Recasner admits.
Her specific role of single mom and aspiring dancer Gabby comes with its own complications, of course.

To borrow a bit from Scott Foley's Nick, you're going to fall in love with The Big Leap, and I'm confident this series won't break our hearts.
If anything, it's just what our hearts and souls need, and that sentiment of what this series can offer as we emerge from bleak times is unmistakable throughout The Big Leap Season 1 Episode 1.
But I'll do you want better. You're going to fall in love with Simone Recasner, too, assuming you haven't already mere minutes into this series. If the pilot hasn't confirmed anything else, it's that she's a gosh damn star.
The series has shades of Glee meets UnReal with a So You Think You Can Dance edge contributed to the inspiration of a British reality series. And the truth is, I don't know what to make or do with any of that, but I will say that it's nothing short of charming,...

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Monday’s series premiere of Fox’s “The Big Leap.”)
“The Big Leap” took a big risk in the closing moments of its first episode Monday, when suspended Detroit Lions player Reggie Sadler (Ser’Darius Blain) lifted aspiring dancer Gabby Lewis (Simone Recasner) over his head in her second-chance audition for “The Big Leap,” the Fox drama’s reality-dance-show-within-a-show that follows contestants putting on a modern reimagining of “Swan Lake.”
A lot was at stake for Gabby and Reggie as she taught him the choreography for the audition in hopes they would both land a slot on the show. For Gabby, this is her second chance at a dance career after her original plan to attend NYU was derailed when she got pregnant right out of high school. Reggie, meanwhile, is bleeding money and desperate to change his image after multiple NFL suspensions due to...

Do a group of underdogs have the presence, perseverance and pirouettes to make it in a televised dance-reality competition?
After the premiere of The Big Leap, which kicked off Monday on Fox, we’re not so sure. The scripted series’ premise: A So You Think You Can Dance-type series called The Big Leap rolls into Detroit, enticing amateur dancers of all ability levels with the chance to audition. Those picked will form an artistic company of 20 who’ll dance in a season-ending performance of Swan Lake.

Fox has lately made its name, and its success, on televised music competitions — everything from “The Masked Singer” and “Dancer” franchises to a revived “Name That Tune” to the amiably strange “I Can See Your Voice.” And so it makes a certain kind of sense that this fall, it launches a new scripted series about … the inner workings of a reality-tv contest.
On “The Big Leap,” various Detroit residents are wooed by a series of the same name, one that aims to find the cast for a televised reimagining of “Swan Lake.” These folks are not necessarily trained ballerinas, just people who have something inside to get out. That “The Big Leap” follows the story of a reality show makes its storytelling economical — we see the big themes of these characters’ lives easily in part because a near-omnipotent producer (Scott Foley) points them out.

During Scott Foley’s 25-year film and television career, he’s gone meta and played someone working in the industry (as Roman Bridger in “Scream 3”), and he’s worked on a competition program (as a host and judge on “Ellen’s Next Great Designer”). But now his latest project, “The Big Leap” for Fox, combines those two elements, creating a wholly different experience for the veteran actor.
Foley stars as Nick Smart, the boss behind the dance show-within-the-show on “The Big Leap” from executive producers Liz Heldens and Jason Winer. (The show-within-the-show is also titled “The Big Leap.”) Nick is a fast-talking producer who never hesitates to let those around him know how urgent his requests are. He also has a keen eye for the genre, innately knowing what characters the audience will want to watch and how to orchestrate the right storytelling around them to make that audience return.

Newcomer Simone Recasner is proud to represent body diversity in the upcoming Fox comedy The Big Leap, something she wishes she’d seen on TV growing up.
“Playing Gabby, she’s somebody who I can relate to on such a profoundly deep level,” Recasner shared during the show’s TCA press day on Wednesday. “We’re meeting her at a time where she’s decided to do the exact opposite of what the world and her brain and everybody really have told her how to act her whole life. And so, having this chance to represent somebody that frankly, I didn’t have growing up… .”
She continued: “I couldn’t ever see myself being on network television as an actor because I didn’t see myself represented. So when this story came around and they were real about having a big, curvy, plus-size body dance — because there are amazing curvy...

On Saturday, a number of key creatives behind The Big Leap appeared for a virtual Atx panel, teasing the first season of their ballet-themed dramedy, which was just picked up to series in April.
Actress Teri Polo described the show as “this happy, good, hopeful thing”—an underdog story representing the kind of “feel-good” entertainment we all need a bit of right now.
“This show [is one] that doubled down on hope, that was funny, that was about dancing,” added creator-ep Liz Heldens. “I think it’s doing what we wanted it to do.”

Fox gave a particularly animated Upfronts presentation this year.
The network used its virtual event for ad buyers to tout its subscription-less services. Kicking off with an amusing video that featured Leslie Jordan talking to a slew of Fox stars such as Rob Lowe (as well as some former stars such as 24’s Kiefer Sutherland) and Charlie Collier, CEO of Fox Entertainment getting a ride from You Bet Your Life host Jay Leno, the presentation moved into a Bento Box-animated portion (see above).
Collier and his team, sometimes under the cover of cartoon, gently slammed the other networks and media conglomerates for the arms race in the subscription video on demand world, highlighting that this is a space that isn’t kind to advertisers.

This week, broadcast networks and their streaming counterparts are showing advertisers and the general public what they’ve got for the upcoming season. While it’s far too early to judge the actual shows, a sense of promise — or of doubt — can be picked up from these early looks out of the upfronts presentations.

Fox announced its fall schedule Monday, revealing that “9-1-1” universe fans will no longer be enjoying the shows back to back in the first half of the 2021-22 season, as spinoff “9-1-1: Lone Star” has been pushed to midseason.
Mondays this fall will still be anchored by “9-1-1” at 8 p.m., but will lead into the new Scott Foley-led drama “The Big Leap” in the 9 o’clock slot. However, that freshman series will wrap by midseason, when “Lone Star” will take over the “9-1-1” slot. Then the “9-1-1” series will be reunited, airing back to back once more, come March.
Fox’s Tuesdays are also seeing a change in pairings, following the recent cancellation of “Prodigal Son.” The now-renewed “The Resident” will keep its 8 o’clock hour, with the first season of Lee Daniels’ drama “Our Kind of People” closing primetime from 9-10.

Scott Foley and Teri Polo are taking a big leap to Fox.
Fox on Wednesday ordered to series a one-hour drama called The Big Leap.
The series was originally ordered to pilot last year, but it was scuppered due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

What this group of underdogs lack in dance training, they make up for with their edge, wit, and desire to reimagine an iconic story to fit their own mold.

Fox has given a series order to hourlong pilot The Big Leap, starring Scott Foley, Teri Polo and Piper Perabo, from Liz Heldens, Jason Winer, Sue Naegle, 20th Television and Fox Entertainment.
The ballet-themed dramedy, which I hear has received a 10-episode order, had been an internal favorite. The pilot was met with enthusiastic reception by Fox executives which has been compared to the reaction at the network to the Glee pilot more than a decade ago. The pickup completes The Big Leap‘s six-year journey to the screen.

Filming on the Fox ballet-themed dramedy pilot The Big Leap was suspended two days ago following confirmed positive Covid-19 cases in a zone of the production that includes the cast as well as crew members who interact with the actors.
The positive test results came in through a routine screening, part of the strict health and safety protocols adopted by Disney TV Studios, whose unit 20th Television is producing The Big Leap.
Production in Chicago continues to be paused and will not resume today. No further decision has been made about the remaining approximately four days left to shoot. The pilot had completed 11 days of filming when the positive tests shut it down.

Fox’s ballet-themed comedy-drama pilot The Big Leap is taking the somewhat unusual step of recasting multiple roles at the 11th hour. And, yes, Covid is to blame.
According to Deadline, Covert Affairs vet Piper Perabo is replacing Laura Benanti (Supergirl, Nashville), while Kevin Daniels (Council of Dads) will be stepping in for Little Britain alum Matt Lucas. Additionally, Galavant‘s Mallory Jansen is also joining the cast in a lead role.
