Rhys lives in the zombie-infested wasteland. His job is to capture civilians and deliver them to what's left of the military. When Rhys captures a half-zombie-half-human named Grace, he comes to believe she is the key to ending the apocalypse. Well, howdy, this came out of nowhere. A while ago we had a look at Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, the sequel to the breakout zombie hit Wyrmwood from from Kiah Roache-Turner and Tristan Roache-Turner. Then we said things like, holy shit, they did it again, or, it is possible to make something that tops the original. Honestly it was a while ago and we may have been a little drunk on the power of early access at the time. Wyrmwood: Apocalypse went on to have...

I was a huge fan of 2014s Australian zombie gorefest Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead and so I have spent the intervening years awaiting the long-gestating sequel with bated breath… and now, finally, it’s here. Was it worth the wait?
Er… F*ck yes!
Picking up just after where the first film left off, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse shows us what happens to Brooke when she goes full-on zombie. At the same time starting a new story which follows Rhys ((Luke McKenzie), the twin of one the characters from the original film, whose running a weird zombie experiment “camp” where he captures and runs tests on the undead – using them to power his facility, to practice boxing with, you know, the usual; all the while looking for signs of a cure.

‘H is for Happiness.’
For producer, director, writer and distributor Robert Connolly, the clear challenge for Australian filmmakers is to create cinema works that speak to the issues the world is facing.
For writer-director Kiah Roache-Turner and his producer brother Tristan Roache-Turner, the solution to the declining indie market lies partly in developing multiple projects with various producers.
Coupled with that is the brothers’ willingness to spend hundreds of hours working with distributors to sell each film and push for more screens.
Producer Julie Ryan laments the increasing trend by some government agencies to encourage producers to pitch feature projects to streaming services rather than via the traditional sales agent/distributor model.
“I am not against having my film released on a streaming service but there isn’t any incentive for them to invest upfront and replace the market funds that were traditionally covered by the sales agent advance and Australia-New Zealand distribution guarantee,...

‘Nekrotronic.’
Kiah Roache-Turner’s Nekrotronic opened in the Us last weekend as a multi-platform release.
Momentum Pictures launched the sci-fi horror comedy starring Monica Bellucci, Ben O’Toole, David Wenham, Caroline Ford, Tess Haubrich and Bob Epine Savea in cinemas in 10 cities and on VOD and digital HD.
The eOne-owned distributor did not share box office figures, which are typically modest for day-and-date releases. The benefit of the theatrical exposure is that the reviews and publicity give the film a profile which pays off in ancillary revenues.
The director trimmed five minutes of exposition scenes after the world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, resulting in more favourable reviews, particularly from genre websites.
For example, We Are Movie Geek’s Marc Butterfield hailed the film as “hilarious, fun, action packed, and full of gross, splashy, gooey moments; in other words, fantastic.”

Coming from writer and director Kiah Roache-Turner, I was very much looking forward to new Australian horror comedy Nekrotronic. His previous movie Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead was a fantastic all action kick up the ass that the zombie genre needed, so a new movie from him about demons sounded even more intriguing. And we’ve had to wait five long years for it!
It would be too simple to say this is a movie about ghosts. Even if you opened that up a little and said it was a ‘supernatural’ movie, that would be too simple. Because this involves demons, the Internet, zombies (kind of), possession and yes, ghosts.

After taking a unique approach to zombies in 2015's Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, co-writer/director Kiah Roache-Turner and co-writer Tristan Roache-Turner deliver a decidedly new spin on ghosts in their latest effort, Nekrotronic. With the horror comedy looking to haunt theaters, VOD, and digital HD on August 9th from Momentum Pictures, we caught up with the filmmakers in our latest Q&a feature, and they discussed how the screenplay changed drastically over the span of two years, working with a talented cast including Ben O'Toole and Monica Bellucci, reteaming with cinematographer Tim Nagle, and they also talked about their plans for a potential prequel to Nekrotronic.
Let’s start off discussing the story of Nekrotronic. We’ve seen supernatural movies before, but you guys went at this in a very different direction than I have ever seen before with this. What was the inspiration behind the story and the...

A shotgun blast of fresh air, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead was a buoyant survival tale about zombies and the possible end of the world. At least, that's what our exclusive clip teases, and, based on Wyrmwood, I'm inclined to believe the film will deliver a roaring good time when it opens in theaters and on VOD platforms next Friday, August 9. Here's the official synopsis, for those who read such things: "Howard North, a down on his luck sewage worker, gets dragged into a global conflict between the Nekromancers, a family of badass demon hunters, and...

“Nekrotronic feels like Quentin Tarantino had been watching a lot of Edgar Wright and Wachowski movies, and then decided to make a Ghostbusters film. [It] is one wild, funny, gory combo.” – Nerdist

Following its crowd-pleasing premiere at Tiff last year, the supernatural cyber-centric horror thriller Nekrotronic will be unleashed this August from Momentum Pictures, and ahead of its release, the film's official trailer teases plenty of high-tech, demonic carnage in the latest movie from Kiah Roache-Turner (Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead).

‘Nekrotronic.’
Kiah Roache-Turner’s sci-fi horror comedy Nekrotronic will be released in the Us in select cinemas and on VOD and digital HD on August 9 by Momentum Pictures.
“I’m really excited: I think day-and-date is the future for most independent films in the Us,” Kiah tells If. “Some say it is the end of cinema but it’s not: it’s a different way of delivering films to eyeballs.”
One advantage of the day-and-date strategy is limiting the potential for piracy. The Roache-Turner brothers’ Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead was available on iTunes in the Us before the Australian release. “Piracy killed us,” he says.
Produced by Andrew Mason and Troy Lum for Hopscotch Features and Tristan Roache-Turner for Guerrilla Films, Nekrotronic stars Monica Bellucci as Finnegan, CEO of the sinister Daemokon corporation, who is determined to feast on every human soul on the planet via a new smartphone app.

A high-tech and stylish homage to Ghostbusters and 80s/90s action films, Nekrotronic premiered at Tiff last year and was definitely an indie crowd-pleaser so it's no surprise to hear that it will be getting a theatrical and VOD release later this year from Momentum Pictures.

The good news for Australian cinema: Last year ranks as the third biggest ever for Oz films and feature docs released theatrically in the home market.
Another encouraging trend: Eight of the top 30 grossing titles were feature docs, led by Paul Damien Williams’ Gurrumul, Mark Joffe’s Jimmy Barnes: Working Class Boy, Ray Argall’s Midnight Oil 1984, Naina Sen’s The Song Keepers and Catherine Scott’s Backtrack Boys.
The not-so-good news: The top two films, Will Gluck’s Peter Rabbit and Bruce Beresford’s Ladies in Black accounted for nearly 70 per cent of total revenues, while 39 of the 61 new releases each made less than $100,000.
Collectively, local titles including holdovers racked up $57.4 million in 2018, trailing the 2001 total of $63.1 million, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia (Mpdaa)

Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner have parlayed their 2015 cult hit Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead into a digitally animated, interactive virtual reality experience and are developing a TV series spin-off and a video game.
The Wyrmwood Vr experience developed around their online teaser Wyrmwood: Chronicles of the Dead will premiere at Create Nsw’s 360 Vision at Carriageworks in November.
Co-produced by the brothers’ Guerilla Films and Spectre Studios, the 15-minute Vr work places the viewer into a photo-realistic digital reconstruction of the Wyrmwood world based around a captive’s escape from an underground military bunker.
Asked how they planned to monetise the production, which was supported by Screen Australia and Create Nsw, Tristan Roache-Turner tells If: “We will release it on the digital platform Steam. As the Vr market grows we aim to have a Wyrmwood Vr experience, Vr game and console game available on all of the major platforms.

The Australian titles released in cinemas this year including holdovers will overtake the calendar 2017 total in the next week or so, boosted by Bruce Beresford’s Ladies in Black.
Through the end of September the Oz films and feature docs had grossed $47.8 million, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia (Mpdaa), within spitting distance of last year’s $49.4 million.
After a second weekend drop of just 10 per cent Ladies in Black’s takings have increased by nearly $800,000 to $5.97 million, including $361,000 on Tuesday, so the 1950s-set comedy-drama distributed by Sony is on course to surpass $12 million.
Distributed by Universal Pictures as an alternate content release, Mark Joffe’s biopic Jimmy Barnes: Working Class Boy rang up $823,000, ranking as the year’s second biggest feature doc behind Paul Damian Williams’ Gurrumul, which made $984,000.

Horror-action-comedy hash “Nekrotronic” has mankind menaced by soul-sucking demons who’ve invaded the internet. A little bit “Tron” meets “Blade,” with a whole lot of other stuff thrown in, this cartoonish Aussie fanboy missive from the brothers Roache-Turner mashes together high energy, lowbrow humor, and a barrage of visual effects to enjoyable but rather numbing effect. Villainness Monica Bellucci may give a lift in some offshore quarters to a hybrid genre exercise whose lack of other star wattage — and excess of every other shiny or explosive thing — suggests target-audience access will be primarily via home formats.
A surfeit of doo-doo jokes start things off unpromisingly as average dude Howie (Ben O’Toole) and space-case sidekick Rangi (Epine Bob Savea) attend the former’s family business of sewage removal, their slogan being “We Take Your Shit.” But it turns out this is both our first and last glimpse of open-air calm...

Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner’s sci-fi horror-comedy Nekrotronic seems to have nearly as many detractors as ardent admirers judging by the reviews after the world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The pro-camp lauded the film, one of 10 titles which screened in the Midnight Madness section, as insane fun with fantastical story elements and tongue-in-cheek humour. The naysayers derided the plot as over-the-top, silly and formulaic.
Produced by Andrew Mason and Troy Lum for Hopscotch Features and Tristan Roache-Turner for Guerrilla Films, the film stars Monica Bellucci as Finnegan, CEO of the sinister Daemokon corporation, who is determined to feast on every human soul on the planet via a new smartphone app.

Stop everything you are doing and watch this gore-filled promo for Wyrmwood: Chronicles of the Dead, the proposed tv show based on the hit zombie flick from brothers Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner. Calling this gore-filled is an understatement. Holy. Hell. Is there a lot of blood and gore in this thing. There are so many words. Gratuitous. Copious. Disgusting. It is also funny as fuck, dipped with the same humor that made the movie such an equal delight of violence and laughs. Even the camera direction and its nods to a filmmaker like Raimi add to the flavor. And if you thought Bianca Bradey was bad as fuck in the movie then you need to check out these mad skills of Australian...

In the Us Jennifer Kent.s The Babadook has raked in more than $US950,000 at cinemas and been viewed online, legally, more than 360,000 times. The horror movie starting Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman thus ranks as the most successful title ever for the Us distributor IFC Midnight, which typically releases films in a handful of cinemas day-and-date with VOD, or straight to VOD.

We’ve been through many cycles of cinematic history now, reached many milestones and have given birth to many cliche’s as well, but as time draws forth, where does film take hold to ensure a continued future of innovation? Certainly, technology does, and will always have its part in the creative endeavor of filmmaking, but when it comes to story, are we beginning to see the long, slow death of originality? On some levels, I fear this may be a temporary reality, but much like life and energy itself, never truly dies and will always find a way.
It will come as no surprise that many a studio film is churned out in formulaic fear of stirring the pot, rousing the dormant interest of adventurous viewers, but we still have our independence. Indie filmmakers, the experimenters, the explorers, the balls-to-the-wall, no excuses, just make it happen and make it yours pioneers.

It's been a long apocalypse — who can blame you if you're zombied out? Yet Australian filmmakers Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner remind us why we love these bloody movies in the first place, evincing Raimi-esque glee at twisting the rules of zombiehood like so much taffy. Their debut feature, Wyrmwood, sheds the dour suspicion that suffuses The Walking Dead; instead of circling each other warily, characters of good heart recognize their kind and welcome them with a shrug and a beer. Freshly widowed Barry (Jay Gallagher) is trying to reunite with his sister, Brooke (Bianca Bradley). He and some new friends (Leon Burchill and Keith Agius) discover that gasoline no longer combusts; zombie breath, on the other hand, does, prompting the construct...

A new dawn of artificial intelligence, a truck that’s literally fueled by zombies, neck-chomping co-workers, and much more. We’re back with another trio of trailers, this time featuring Chappie, Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead, and Bloodsucking Bastards.
“Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.”
Directed by Neill Blomkamp off a screenplay he wrote with Terri Tatchell,...
