So you’re tired of all the news reports and headlines about those campaigning for the president, in an election that’s still over a year away? Well, why not take in a movie at the multiplex? Here’s Sandra Bullock’s latest all about…a presidential campaign. Ah, but Sandy’s not in the running, although she’s dashing around quite a bit. She’s a campaign strategist who’s working for a candidate all the way south, very south, in Bolivia. So are presidential races there the same as up here, with sound bites, negative ads,and other ways to manipulate the media? You bet your ballot! So what does she come up with, how will her hopeful break away from the ‘pack’? Just one way, as Ms. B explains in the film’s first act, Our Brand Is Crisis.

In Our Brand Is Crisis, Anthony Mackie trades in his Captain America superhero tights to play Ben, the leader of a political management team that is brought to Bolivia to assist a presidential candidate who is failing in the polls.
Ben ends up working very closely with Jane Bodine (Sandra Bullock), who uses every tool at her disposal to make this candidate a winner regardless of whether or not she buys into that man’s politics. What makes Ben stand out is that, while the other characters constantly question their own motives and agendas, he has a strong perspective throughout the movie about how politics can and should work for the people. Ben has a strong moral center from start to finish, and Mackie makes sure you never forget that.

It’s probably because I know little about politics and care even less that I find most film’s dealing with the subject matter enjoyable. George Clooney‘s The Ides of March is one—the actor taking on the director’s chair, a co-screenwriting credit, and co-lead in front of the lens. Highly political himself with the media, it’s no surprise he’d gravitate towards a play based on an actual campaign (“Farragut North”) or a documentary doing much the same. The latter is Rachel Boynton‘s film centered on the 2002 Bolivian presidential election overseen by Us firm Greenberg Carville Shrum’s marketing team of which the narrative Our Brand Is Crisis took both name and plot. Clooney was set to star here, too, before Sandra Bullock took a shine to the script.
