Our favorite hedgehog is going Hollywood! Sega CEO Hajime Satomi has announced that the company is developing a live action hybrid movie! Come inside to find out what that means.
In an age where childhood tv shows, comic books, and even video games are being adapted for film, on a frequent basis, Sega has announced that Sonic the Hedgehog will be added to that list.
Speaking with The Worldfolio, CEO of Sega Hajime Satomi had this to say about the speedy hedgehog's future:
"Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved."
The move is a smart one for Sega. Sonic the Hedgehog doesn't have the popularity it once had. Sega has...

Sonic The Hedgehog is finally being brought up to speed with the other popular comic book properties that have been given a shot at being adapted for big-screen adventure. That's right... Sonic The Hedgehog is being primed for his very own movie. Remember back when Sonic was the cool, edgy version of Mario? Back when his games were good and Sega could do no wrong? Well, the blue blur has seen better days since then. His games are selling less and less with each release, and even worse, the quality seems only to diminish even more with each iteration.
But you're not here to hear about my gripes with old-school video game mascot characters, are you? Well, word has it that Sonic may be hitting the big screen soon. In a recent interview with The World Folio, Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. President and CEO Hajime Satomi said the company was working on a film featuring the world-famous character.

Last year, it was announced that Sonic the Hedgehog would be getting the feature film treatment. Sega is teaming up with Sony Pictures to bring it to the big screen. We learned at the time that the film would help be developed by Sega's CG animation film company, so I just assumed that it would be a full CG animated film, which would have been great!
Unfortunately, in this latest update by Sega CEO Hajime Satomi, we learn that the film is going to be a live-action-animation hybrid film, which isn't appealing at all. These CG animated and live-action hybrid films never work, and it breaks my heart that this is the direction Sony and Sega are taking the production. During an interview with The Worldfolio, Satomi said:

Back in 2014 came word that Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sega Sammy Group's Marza Animation Planet were teaming up to develop "Sonic the Hedgehog," a live-action and animation hybrid cinematic feature based on the iconic video game franchise.
Nothing much has been heard since, but Sega CEO Hajime Satomi revealed to Worldfolio (via io9) this week that the project is still on the way and is being fast-tracked for a 2018 release.
The film aims to capture Sonic's irreverent tone and will incorporate iconic characters from the franchise including the evil Dr. Eggman. Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are penning this feature which is being produced by Neal H. Moritz, Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi.
The "Sonic" franchise has sold over 140 million games and the character previously headlined several animated series.

Sega mascot Sonic The Hedgehog is to get his first feature film, with Sony Pictures aiming for a 2018 release...
We might have expected that Sega would have something major planned for the 26th anniversary of its mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog. Well, here's one pretty huge announcement: Sega and Sony are joining forces to make a "live-action and animation hybrid" feature film, which is due for release in 2018.
The news was confirmed by Sega president and CEO Hajime Satomi, who had the following to say:

It seems as though the disappointment surrounding Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric wasn’t exclusive to consumers, after Sega Company CEO and President Hajime Satomi has pledged to regain the trust of its audience following a string of middling console releases.
As a matter of fact, the executive even went so far as to say that the Japanese company – once an industry giant across both hardware and software – has “betrayed” the fanbase, and that the overriding goal now is to return to winning ways as soon as possible. Speaking in an interview with Japanese video game magazine Famitsu (via Siliconera), Satomi offered a candid mea culpa to fans on the current status of Sega, all the while hinting that a new console title may be revealed during Tokyo Game Show in September.
