As the actors’ and writers’ strikes against Hollywood studios grind on in the summer’s heat, there’s more time for famous actors, writers (Chuck Lorre) and reality stars (who are not striking anything) to hit the party scene from Hollywood to New York to the Napa Valley, helping raise money for good causes and have some fun along the way.

For the first time in 75 years, one of golf’s four major tournaments has returned to the city of Los Angeles.
The United States Open championship, now in its 123rd year, is taking place on the Los Angeles Country Club’s North Course for the very first time (also making it the first time a major championship has been held at the club in general). This lack of major championship presence at the 126-year-old course – some 325 acres in the middle of Beverly Hills — is largely by design; infamous for its discriminatory exclusivity (the club had no Jewish members until 1977, and the first Black member was admitted in 1991), the club has opened its gates to the public to host the Los Angeles Open four times (most recently in 1940) and the 2017 Walker Cup.

George Michael and Clayton Kershaw agree on one thing: “Ya gotta have faith.”
The Los Angeles Dodgers and Kershaw have announced what’s termed a “relaunch” of the team’s “Christian Faith and Family Day” event.
News of the resurrected faith event comes shortly after the team enmeshed itself in a controversy over its Pride Night celebration. The team invited – then disinvited – then reinvited the controversial Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence group to take part in Pride Night’s events. Church leaders and their supporters complained that the group mocks main tenets of the faith and the service of nuns.
The Dodgers created a public relations nightmare with its back-and-forth with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. The Los Angeles LGBT Center pulled out of Pride Night and asked the Dodgers to either reinvite the Sisters or cancel the event. Marianne Tombaugh, the mother of Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw and the person who instilled a love of baseball in the all-star, has died.
Tombaugh died on Saturday, according to Ellen Kershaw, the pitcher’s wife. She revealed the death during the dedication of a refurbished youth baseball field in Inglewood which his charity foundation supported. No age or cause of death was given.
Kershaw was raised by his mother in suburban Dallas after his parents’ divorce.
“Clayton grew up with a baseball in his hand ready to play a game in a sandlot or on a ballfield just like this one on a moment’s notice,” Ellen Kershaw said at the dedication.
“One person in particular cultivated that love in Clayton, his dear momma Marianne, who moved mountains to get him to baseball practice and games. She sat front row cheering him on not so subtly and kept...

Vin Scully, the longtime Dodgers play-by-play announcer considered by many to be the king of his profession, died Tuesday. He was 94.
The Los Angeles Dodgers confirmed Scully’s death through its official social media.

Vin Scully, the velvet-tongued sports broadcaster known to generations of baseball fans as the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers, has died, the team announced Tuesday. He was 94.
Scully’s mark on Los Angeles, baseball and broadcasting history will never be matched. To say he was beloved is a colossal understatement — while most baseball fans could scarcely name a close rival’s play-by-play man, every decent baseball fan gets wistful at the mere mention of Scully.

Hulu has debuted a new trailer for its upcoming limited series “Mike,” starring Trevante Rhodes (“Moonlight”) as iconic and polarizing heavyweight champion boxer Mike Tyson. The eight-episode series will launch on Aug. 25 with two episodes; two additional episodes will stream weekly from there.
From creator and screenwriter Steven Rogers and the team behind “I, Tonya” and showrunner Karin Gist (“Our Kind of People” executive producer), “Mike” explores the dynamic and controversial story of Tyson throughout the tumultuous ups and downs of his career and personal life.
Over the last 30 years in the public eye, Tyson has infamously swung from a beloved global athlete to a pariah and back again. Through its brutal and towering central figure, “Mike” looks to examine class and race in America, fame and the power of media, misogyny, the promise of the American Dream and ultimately society’s own role in shaping Tyson’s story. “Baseball is a game for fathers and sons,” someone once said.
Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw learned that again tonight when he rose to leave his All-Star Game press conference and a member of the media told him, “Clayton, I think there’s a kid who’s trying to ask you [something].”
“Oh, dude, sorry,” Kershaw said as 10-year-old Blake Grice approached him. “Whatcha got?”
Grice, who according to Fox11’s Geraud Moncuré, got into the press conference because he “has a media Instragram,” approached the Dodgers legend and told him a story about his grandfather, Graham, who died from brain cancer seven years ago.
In front of the assembled media, Grice told Kershaw that when his grandpa was sick, he made a bucket list with his two grandchildren of everything they were going to do together once he beat cancer: go to the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, meet Vin Scully.
It also included meeting Kershaw.

The Boston Red Sox are the 2018 World Series champions, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 5 to 1 Sunday night at Dodgers Stadium and wrapping up an impressive 4-1 takedown.
The championship is the fourth by Boston in this century after a 20th century drought that dated to 1918. It is their first championship since 2013 and caps a year that saw Boston win 108 games in the regular season and triumph over the New York Yankees and Houston Astros in earlier playoff competition.
Boston’s only loss of the series came in Game 3’s 18-inning affair, and tonight they got over the hump by beating Dodgers ace pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who now faces a decision on whether he will opt-out of the remaining years on his contract and test the free agency waters or stay with the team.

The Los Angeles Dodgers World Series ticket-punching 5-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series outslugged all others on TV on Saturday, scoring a 4.9 overnight rating on Fox Sports 1.
The game — highlighted by stellar pitching from rookie starter Walker Buehler, homers by Cody Bellinger and Yasiel Puig, and a ninth-inning close by Clayton Kershaw — ended up being the highest-rated cable broadcast of any Mlb game in Los Angeles since 1998, Fox Sports says. It drew a 15.9 metered market rating in L.A., easily best ever for an FS1 broadcast.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are going back to the World Series, knocking off the upstart Milwaukee Brewers tonight 5-1 in a sudden-death Game 7 in the National League Championship Series. That victory gives them the right to face the Boston Red Sox in the World Series, which starts Tuesday.

This news isn’t likely to cheer Clayton Kershaw up, but ESPN said today that Thursday’s 2018 Mlb opener for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants drew the sports net’s best opening-day numbers in six years.
The 1-0 victory by the hated Giants at Dodger Stadium was seen by 1.67 million viewers, also making it the most-watched regular-season weekday Major League Baseball game since opening day 2012, per Nielsen. The game marked the debut of the Worldwide Leader’s new Sunday Night Baseball team of Matt Vasgersian, Alex Rodriguez, and Jessica Mendoza.
For the Dodgers, it was the first game that counted since the team’s disappointing Game 7 of last year’s World Series — a plodding 5-1 loss that capped an otherwise ferocious Fall Classic that saw the Houston Astros captures the first world championship in franchise history.
Thursday’s game also ushered in the era of new Mlb...
