With the 2024 Oscars in the rearview mirror, it’s time to start looking toward 2025. It’s early, but not too early to start making predictions about what movies might contend for the Oscars next year.
The 97th Academy Awards may wind up dominated by an unusual number of blockbuster sequels to films that won big previously. There are also some period pieces, some comeback vehicles, and some movies that were featured on last year’s list that got held back for this year.
Here are 20 films to know for the 2025 Oscars. Some of them are locks, some of them are long shots, and all of them are worth keeping an eye on throughout 2024 as their Academy Awards chances rise and fall.
“A Real Pain”
One of three films on this list that have screened publicly as of publication time, road dramedy “A Real Pain” was the buzziest title out of Sundance this year.

For years, Keith Powers and Ryan Destiny were the ultimate couple goals. They first crossed paths at a Teen Vogue party in 2015 but initially played coy about their relationship. It wasn't until 2019 that they finally confirmed their romance in a WeTheUrban digital cover that July (via People). At the time, Powers opened up about his feelings on keeping his personal life to himself, explaining, "The more you keep private the happier you'll be. It's not easy being in a public relationship, so you try to keep as much as you can private. Control your own narrative, don't give people too much because they make up stuff from the outside looking in."
Destiny echoed similar sentiments, adding that making sure she's still seen as an individual is key for her. "We try to find a balance," she shared. "I'm already a private person and very career driven so reminding people that...

Every Oscar season brings a perfect blend of unexpected movies joining into the race, films falling out and lots of other last-minute decisions. Our 2024 Oscars predictions center launched in early July with the eight top categories. Since then, we’ve received alerts and notices that 13 movies will be eligible instead for 2024 (and the 2025 Academy Awards competition).
More changes will certainly be made in the upcoming months with news from festivals, premieres, red carpet events and critical response. But for now, here are the 13 films that were initially available for 2024 prediction but have been removed. Keep in mind that the reasons for changes could be more editing/technical work needs to be done on these movies, quality level is low, getting away from the strikes timeframce, and/or holding to have more product in 2024 since production has been slowed down.
Also, any film listed below could be reconsidered and shifted back...

In just a short amount of time, actor Keith Powers has already had several notable performances on screen. He's starred in "Straight Outta Compton," BET's "The New Edition Story," and "The Tomorrow War." The actor shows no signs of slowing down, either. He is now starring alongside Gabrielle Union in the new Netflix rom-com "The Perfect Find" and is set to appear in an upcoming film titled "The Uglies" with Joey King, Chase Stokes, and Laverne Cox.
When he isn't working, Powers prefers to stay out of the spotlight and maintains a private personal life, which applies to the people he dates. It's unclear if he's currently single or taken, but he has been linked to two people in the public eye: rapper Saweetie and fellow actor Ryan Destiny.
Keep reading to find out everything we know about Powers's love life!

Picking up an Oscar nomination (or better yet a win) can often lead to subsequent nominations in the following years. After Eddie Redmayne won Best Actor for “The Theory of Everything” in 2015, he picked up a second nomination the year later for “The Danish Girl.” And Willem Dafoe earned consecutive nominations in 2018 and 2019 for his work on”The Florida Project” and “At Eternity’s Gate.”
The Oscars afterglow is a real thing. So which of this year’s nominated stars could theoretically feel the benefit of this trend? We’ve combed through each of the 20 nominees’ next projects to see who could follow up their bid this year with a potential nomination next year. After all, it’s never too late to start thinking about the next Academy Awards, right?

Two years ago, cinematographer Rachel Morrison began shooting her directorial debut, "Flint Strong" — a boxing drama starring Ryan Destiny, Oluniké Adeliye, and Ice Cube — for Universal Pictures. Two days into principal photography, the pandemic forced the project to shut down. While Universal would eventually resume production on most of its greenlit films, they chose not to continue with "Flint Strong."
The film appeared to be an unfortunate casualty of an unforeseen crisis, but producers Michael De Luca and Elisha Holmes, who left Universal for MGM, kept the faith. And though De Luca is currently on his...

Justin Bieber teamed up with Chance The Rapper to create a new gospel-inspired track filled with positive vibes and love. The Biebs dropped the music video to his new single "Holy" at midnight on Sept 18. In just the first few hours, the video gained millions of views from fans online. However, it's almost unfair to call the new visual "a music video" as it's realistically a five-minute movie, according to the singer himself. In the visual, the Grammy winner and his love interest, singer and actress Ryan Destiny, are making ends meet as he works as a construction worker and she works in a nursing home in a small town. The young couple, though having a difficult time, find a way to...

Check out the song lyrics of Holy by Justin Bieber ft. Chance The Rapper
I hear a lot about sinners
Don't think that I'll be a saint
But I might go down to the river
'Cause the way that the sky opens up when we touch
Yeah, it's making me say
That the way you hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me
Feels so holy, holy, holy, holy, holy
On God
Runnin' to the altar like a track star
Can't wait another second

Check out the song lyrics of Holy by Justin Bieber ft. Chance The Rapper
I hear a lot about sinners
Don't think that I'll be a saint
But I might go down to the river
'Cause the way that the sky opens up when we touch
Yeah, it's making me say
That the way you hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me
Feels so holy, holy, holy, holy, holy
On God
Runnin' to the altar like a track star
Can't wait another second
'Cause the way you hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me feels so holy

Justin Bieber and Chance the Rapper surprised fans with a new song.
The 26-year-old singer has collaborated with Chance the Rapper for their latest single 'Holy,' and they both appear in its accompanying video.
Justin Bieber and Chance the Rapper dropped the music video on Thursday night, which is directed by Colin Tilley, who also helmed Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's 'Wap' video.
In the video, Bieber plays an oil rig worker whose plant gets shut down due to a “global situation," but love and spirituality sustains him.
“The way you hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me/feels so holy, holy, holy, holy, holy,” he sings on the chorus.
“I know I ain’t leaving you, like I know he ain’t leaving us,” Chance raps, with Justin Bieber nearby. “I know we believe in God and I know God believe in us.

Teyana Taylor is set to release “The Album” on Friday, coinciding with Juneteenth, the day marking word of emancipation reaching enslaved African-Americans in the outermost territories in 1865.
To preview the project — featuring such music elites as Erykah Badu, Missy Elliott, Lauryn Hill, Future, Kehlani, Quavo, Rick Ross and Davido, among others — Taylor threw a listening party at a private mansion in Beverly Hills on Wednesday, June 17. Variety was among the guests in attendance — many gathered in yellow protective gear and noting it was their first time at an event since going into isolation due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The event was hosted by Karrueche and Terrence J, the latter who declared at the start: “Teyana doesn’t f–k with a lot of people. Congrats on being a real one, you made the list.”

After Netflix and Disney shuttered all live-action productions, Universal has decided to do the same with “Jurassic World: Dominion,” “Flint Strong” and the untitled Billy Eichner project all going on hiatus effective Friday.
The studio continues to monitor the situation closely and will make a determination on when to restart production in the coming weeks.
“Jurassic World: Dominon” had been shooting in London since February but in light of the coronavirus pandemic, execs felt it was the best move for the safety of all involved to delay the shoot indefinitely.
Like all the other productions being closed around the world, it is unknown when the shoot was going to end and if it will impact the June 2021 release date at this time.
Colin Trevorrow also wrote the script with Emily Carmichael (“Pacific Rim: Uprising”) from a story by Derek Connolly. Trevorrow is exec producing with Steven Spielberg, with Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley producing.

Production on all of Universal’s live action films including “Jurassic World: Dominion” will go on hiatus starting this weekend as a precautionary measure amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the studio said on Friday night.
Along with the “Jurassic World” sequel, Universal also paused filming on the upcoming boxing biopic “Flint Strong,” starring Ice Cube and Ryan Destiny. Universal previously delayed the start of production on the romantic comedy “Bros” starring Billy Eichner.
The moves come amid a wave of production suspensions, cancellations and postponements as Hollywood reacts to the spread of the virus that causes the illness covid-19. The moves include the closure of major studio-affiliated theme parks, including Universal Studios Hollywood and Orlando.

“The good news is: we’re doing a movie of the week to wrap things up for you all,” he said, adding, “We’re going to make something real special for you to scream about, with all of our cast members – even the dead ones.”
“Star,” a drama series about three girls’ rise to fame, was canceled in May after three seasons on the air. Co-created by Daniels and Tom Donaghy, the show was produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Lee Daniels Entertainment. Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny, Brittany O’Grady, Queen Latifah, Quincy Brown and Amiyah Scott starred in the series.

Lee Daniels says his canceled Fox drama “Star” will be getting a proper send off, of sorts, in the form of what he called “movie of the week.”
“I wanted to share some and news and good news. The bad news is that star is not getting picked up for series. To long of a story to cry about. But the good news is that we’re doing a movie of the week to wrap things up for y’all,” Daniels said in video posted Friday to his Instagram, which you can watch below. “We’re gonna make something real special for you to scream about with all of our cast members, even the dead ones.”
The “Empire” creator did not say where the two-hour “Star” movie would air. Reps for Fox TV and 20th Century Fox did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Daniels did not reveal any details about where the Star finale would appear. An obvious assumption would be that a telefilm would be on Fox, which also is wrapping up Daniels’ Empire next year. Of course, one has to take into account Daniels is a Class A hype man,...
