Twenty-five years after Mike Tyson’s infamous bite of Evander Holyfield’s ear, boxing saw history repeat itself during a super middleweight bout on ESPN on Saturday night.
During the seventh round of a 10-round match at Madison Square Garden, boxer Edgar Berlanga bit into the shoulder and ear of his opponent, Alexis Angulo, while the two were clinched together. The bite was immediately noticed by the ESPN commentators, and Angulo protested to the referee; but Berlanga was not disciplined. Berlanga would go on to win the fight by unanimous decision, keeping him undefeated at 20-0.
After the fight, Berlanga said he bit into Angulo as payback for getting hit with illegal elbows. “He was throwing elbows. I was about to do a Mike Tyson on him,” Berlanga told ESPN. “He kept throwing his elbows, and I didn’t want to get cut.”

The days are numbered for when we find out who “Money” Mayweather will be fighting in this next bout.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has continued to lead us on time and time again over who he will be fighting on May 4. There have been speculations that he will be fighting undefeated Mexican superstar and Wbc Light Middleweight Champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Mayweather has also stated on Twitter that he was close to securing a unification fight with Ibf Light Welterweight Champion Devon Alexander.
According to sources close to Mayweather, however, it is neither of those two who will be sharing the ring with the pound for pound king. The leading candidate at this moment seems to be none other than interim Wbc Welterweight Champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. Guerrero has been calling out Floyd for the past few years, and it appears that it has finally gone through to him.

Undefeated boxing champ Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has begun his 90-day prison sentence in Nevada.
The sports star surrendered to authorities in a Clark County courtroom on Friday afternoon and was led away in handcuffs to start serving time for a domestic violence charge.
The count is the result of Mayweather, Jr.'s arrest in September, 2010, after his ex-girlfriend, Josie Harris, accused him of striking her "multiple times in the head with his fist" in front of their two children, who were aged nine and 10 at the time of the attack.
He was initially due to begin the three-month sentence in January, but appealed to a judge to delay the punishment until after his big money bout with Miguel Cotto last month. He was given until Friday to turn himself in.

Floyd Mayweather took the super welterweight championship from Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 5. He grabbed his 43rd win while dealing with a jail sentence and a younger, stronger fighter in Cotto.
Mayweather still managed to protect his 42-0 record against his opponent in 12 rounds and 36 minutes. Mayweather's signature moves were effective against Cotto in the first few rounds, but the younger fighter got smart and stayed around the outside, causing Mayweather to falter a bit. He came back in the end and won with a unanimous decision. Now? Off to jail to serve an 87-day sentence in a domestic case, which may be reduced to 57 days with good behavior.
"When I'm gone away, I can sit down and write down a lot of my ideas," Mayweather tells MLive. "Come up with some more amazing ideas for my company and for the sport of boxing.

Bieber and 50 Cent carried Mayweather's championship belts to the ring in pre-fight introductions and sat ringside to take in the festivities, in which Mayweather defeated Cotto in a 12-round unanimous decision. After the fight, they took to the ring again to celebrate with the bruised champ.
Bieber, an avowed boxing fan who's struck up an unlikely friendship with the brash and outspoken Mayweather, congratulated the champ after the fight.
@FloydMayweather Hard Work & Dedication . congrats champ. glad i could be a part of it

Of course Floyd Mayweather took care of business last night against Miguel Cotto -- he had the dreaded masters of intimidation in his corner, like Lil Wayne, 50 Cent and ... Justin Bieber?Bieber walked out with Mayweather before the fight and was in the ring with him after to celebrate the victory. It's unclear how the two hooked up, though Bieber did once compare himself to Mayweather in an interview. Earlier in the day, Bieber tweeted,...

Floyd Mayweather won the super welterweight championship title on Saturday (May 5) in Las Vegas, defeating defender Miguel Cotto. That's not shocking. What is shocking is who flanked Mayweather as he walked to the ring: Justin Bieber and 50 Cent.
The Bieb, whose "Boyfriend" video just dropped on Thursday, carried the Mayweather's previous title belts to the ring and both stayed in his corner as he went 12 rounds against Cotto before he was unanimously declared the winner.
The Twitterverse exploded with the news of Mayweather's surprising companions. Most comments mirrored this tweeter, who wrote, "50 Cent and Justin Bieber in this bit! lmfaoooooo."
Also on hand in Las Vegas for the fight were Lil' Wayne and Mary J. Blige,
Next up for Mayweather: A possible three-month jail sentence on domestic violence charges.

After yesterday’s weigh in, we are now only hours away from the most anticipated fight of the year, as HBO pay per view presents Floyd Mayweather (43-0, 26 ko) vs Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30 ko).
Mayweather weighed in yesterday at 151 lbs, 3 pounds lighter than his Puerto Rican opponent. The face off went on a little longer than it might have, with Mayweather managing to get his first response out of Cotto for the entirety of the promotion campaign. ‘I just told him when your facing Floyd Mayweather, your facing the best…I’m different from all the opponents he’s faced, I’m a boxer, a puncher…I do everything good.’
In response Cotto answered ‘He’s never faced anyone like Miguel Cotto before, thats the reason he’s undefeated and thats the reason tomorrow, I’m going to be in charge’.

Old sports writers (mainly Pardon the Interruption host and professional crank Tony Kornheiser) like to remind anybody listening that for most of the pre-World War II era, the biggest sports in America were baseball, boxing, and horse racing.

For these two iconic talisman of the sport, the Thrilla in Manila cemented Frazier’s reputation as a giant among men; Ali’s as the greatest of all time. It also marked the inception of Pay Per View sports technology, giving viewers across the globe a simultaneous screening of events. In our weekly "Love Of The Game" series, HuffPost Black Voices talks sports with a person of note. This week New York Times best-selling author and 'CSI: NY' star Hill Harper shares his thoughts on Floyd Mayweather’s upcoming fight against Miguel Cotto.
"I’m watching my man Floyd Mayweather coming up to fight on May 5th and I’m really sad that he’s not fighting Manny Pacquiao. That’s a fight that should’ve been made, but instead he’s fighting somebody else. And also, he’s fighting a fight before he’s about to go serve some time, and I wonder how’s that wearing on his mind. He’s been a mentally strong fighter, and I think that has led to his success. So you have to be very mentally strong to know that you’re fighting a fight and then soon there afterwards...

While he postured and taunted as only he can, when it came down to Floyd Mayweather actually fighting Manny Pacquiao, the boxer took a pass. Instead Mayweather's next match will be against Miguel Cotto on May 5 in Las Vegas.
The boxer announced his plans on Wednesday (Feb. 1) for the bout at the MGM Grand. The match will determine the title holder for the Wba super welterweight belt.
The date had long been reserved for a Mayweather fight, but the match came into doubt when he was convicted of domestic violence and harassment. He was to begin a 90-day sentence on Jan. 6, but Mayweather was granted a six-month delay so that he could train for and meet these obligations.
"I'm just happy to be fighting May 5," Mayweather tells the Associated Press. "They granted me one fight. I need to conduct myself like a gentleman and do everything that the court ordered...

Here's a grat collection of screenshots and a few trailers from the new boxing video game Fight Night: Champion show you the detailed realistic damage that you can inflict on your boxing oponent. I've always been a big fan of these Fight Night games, and it looks like they've once again taken it to a whole new level bloody boxing carnage.
The single-player mode is intended to recreate the dramatic and emotional aspects of the sport.
A new mode called "Champion Mode" will be featured in the game. It revolves around a storyline which follows a boxer named Andre Bishop. Most other modes, such as Legacy Mode (the career mode of the series) are expected to return.
EA is promising a refined physics-based animation system and a new "Full Spectrum Punch Control" scheme. There will also be a demo launching on both Xbox Live and Psn on the 1st of February.
