Teenagers are confusing as it is, but their depiction in the film “Spork” makes them even more bewildering. Spork (Savannah Stehlin) is a 14-year-old hermaphrodite with an overly passive personality that makes her difficult for viewers to relate to or sympathize with. Raised as a girl by her older brother after their mother died and father left, Spork has all the opportunities to grow into an interesting character with an original story — yet the film doesn’t quite capture it that way.
Spork is an awkward young girl easily labeled an outcast. Her family is so poor and bizarre that they buried her mom in the backyard, ironically overgrown with weeds that Spork is deathly allergic to. She also kept and stuffed their pet dog Buster after his death. She...

Fox, Michael William Arnold, Oana Gregory, Kevin Chung, Keith David, Rodney Eastman Sure, there’s no harm in getting a laugh out of the classic tasteless poop and penis jokes once in a while, but ultimately, they’re thoughtless cheap shots. Spork on the other hand, is quite the opposite, a film that earns its giggles through very calculated efforts including a unique story, equally innovative and appropriate production techniques and, most importantly, a main character who’s incredibly odd, yet wildly endearing all at the same time.
