But the real Simcoe also passed the 'Act Against Slavery' in 1793, leading to the abolition of slavery in Upper Canada (Ontario) by 1810 and founded the city of York, now known as Toronto:

The first season of AMC’s Turn wasn’t exactly the shot heard ’round the world. Facing a slate of popular Sunday-night competition like Game of Thrones and The Good Wife, Craig Silverstein’s Revolutionary War drama had to fight for respect—something it ultimately won with a riveting finale that helped secure a second season. Jamie Bell stars as Abraham Woodhull, a Long Island cabbage farmer initially straddling the fence as the American uprising turns into a full-fledged war. His father (Kevin McNally) and wife (Meegan Warner) are staunch Tory loyalists; his childhood friends, including the love of his...

Revolutionary War era drama Turn has been renewed for a second season by AMC despite modest ratings for its debut season.
AMC Renews 'Turn'
AMC has ordered 10 episodes for Turn's sophomore season, reported Entertainment Weekly. The renewal comes as somewhat of a surprise, considering the show's ratings. Only about 2 million viewers tuned in each week, including DVR payback. However, the network has had success in the past – most notably with Breaking Bad – in slowly building up a show's audience.
“Craig Silverstein, Barry Josephson and a talented cast and crew delivered a truly distinctive and engaging premiere season. We look forward to continuing this revolutionary journey into season two,” said Charlie Collier, AMC president, in a statement. “AMC and its creative partners have a track record of nurturing programs we collectively believe in, patiently growing viewership and engagement over time. When we first met Abraham Woodhull, the saddest cabbage farmer in all of 1776 Long Island, earlier this year, he was suffering through the psychological discomfort of sitting on the political fence while his childhood friends took up arms for the patriot cause against the garrison of British soldiers in his hometown of Setauket. Ben Talmadge was a Connecticut Dragoon officer. Caleb Brewster had gone underground to disrupt British operations. And Anna Strong, the woman Abe gave up to marry his dead brother’s fiancée, was likely spitting in the redcoats’ whiskey as she served them at her husband’s pub.

Two of the biggest genre guarantees in television history are spy stories – everything from the loopy comic brilliance of Get Smart to the intrigue of FX’s terrific The Americans – and historical dramas, including celebrated miniseries like Roots and, recently, Hatfields & McCoys. However, bridge the two genres together and the results do not bustle with as much promise.
AMC’s newest drama, Turn, brims with intrigue but is subpar with its execution for the first hour. It tells the true story of America’s first spy ring in Revolution-era America. Rebel farmers in the Northeastern U.S. organized the Culper Ring to monitor the occupying British, later relaying this intel to Gen. George Washington’s army. (As the brief opening text explains, Washington’s rebels retreated into the wilderness, with much of New York and Brooklyn Harbor under British control.) The Culper Ring is already in action as the episode begins,...

I’m not sure how this one snuck past me, but apparently AMC is prepping a period drama about the American Revolutionary War. Now, that’s not exactly a subject I find entirely interesting (a Canadian not interested in American wars, go figure), but there is an idea behind this I find intriguing. Turn is supposedly the untold story of America’s first spy ring. There’s some truth to this story, but how I much I cannot say. Still, the idea of the first American spies is something I can get behind even if I don’t have the biggest love for American history. Just take a look at this trailer from AMC and tell me if you think there’s something worth watching here.
