This week’s streaming picks will have you seeing double. Doppelgangers are inherently terrifying, or at the very least alarming, for a variety of reasons. In mythology, a doppelganger often acts as a foreboding harbinger of bad news or luck. On a biological level, there’s something unsettling about the discovery of an unrelated person or entity sharing your face.
Then there’s the matter of identity theft, something horror exploits when it comes to doppelgangers. It’s eerie enough to see what appears to be your clone in the wild, but it’s a whole new level of scary when they attempt to take over your entire existence as their own.
This week’s streaming picks highlight the perils of doppelgangers.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

‘Anything’s Possible’ Writer Ximena García Lecuona Sets Directorial Debut: ‘No Me Sigas’ (Exclusive)
Chosen as one of Variety’s 10 Screenwriters to Watch 2022, Ximena García Lecuona, the Mexico City-based writer of Billy Porter’s “Anything’s Possible,” has set her directorial debut “No Me Sigas,” a Spanish-language chiller with a shocking final twist.
Also writer of “The Kiss List,” García Lecuona will direct with brother Eduardo Lecuona. The smart genre horror thriller is set up at Mexico City’s Maligno Gorehouse, which co-produced “Huesera,” a double Tribeca winner and XYZ pick-up.
Also written by García Lecuona, “No Me Sigas” turns on Carla, 26, who dreams of becoming a big influencer. To achieve this she decides to fake a haunting in her apartment. However, in playing with these dark forces, she accidentally lets in a real malignant entity.
“Although a horror movie instead of a romantic comedy, ‘No Me Sigas,’ [like ‘Anything’s Possible” and “The Kiss List”] also falls in the Young Adult genre, it has that coming-of-age feel.

Described as a “hugely ambitious feature film slate,” El Estudio and Morbido are launching The Latin House of Horror, and Variety brings us the scoop this afternoon.
The Latin House of Horror will be dedicated to “channeling the voices of a powerful new generation of genre artists emerging in Spain and, most especially, Latin America.”
A six-movie slate was announced out of Cannes this week. Mexico’s Sula Films will produce the series, with Film Factory Entertainment handling world sales.
Variety reports, “The slate is designed to supercharge genre production in Latin America, in ambition, profile and exports, just as Filmax’s Fantastic Factory did a generation ago in Spain.”

El Estudio and Morbido are launching The Latin House of Horror, a hugely ambitious feature film slate channelling the voices of a powerful new generation of genre directors – and indeed writers – emerging in Spain and, most especially, Latin America.
The slate is designed to supercharge genre production in Latin America, in ambition, profile and exports, just as Filmax’s Fantastic Factory did a generation ago in Spain, El Estudio producer Enrique López Lavigne told Variety.
Mexico’s Sula Films, headed by Mexican producer Alejandro Sugich (“Los Hermanos Salvador”), will also produce the series. Vicente Canales’ Film Factory Entertainment is handling world sales.
Announced at Cannes, the House’s first slate of six movies features established talent such as Adrián García Bogliano, a founding figure of modern Argentine scarefare, now based out of Mexico; and Isaac Ezban, who rapidly established a reputation for films wrapped in hauntingly surreal scenarios: Think “The Incident” and “The Similars.

It's not easy to be the sibling of an ill child. You're expected to be more of an adult than you're prepared for, accept less attention from your parents, be brave and kind, when you yourself are still growing up and need the kind of focus that only a mother or father can give. Girls of this early teenage age are on a strange cusp, with a maturity forced upon them, but without the resources to handle it. Add in some witchcraft and an isolated location, and there's more trouble brewing than maybe one girl can handle. While Mexican director Isaac Ezban usually delves in science fiction, there's always a touch of the fairy tale. So it's no wonder that for his...

Director Isaac Ezban (The Similars, The Incident) departs from his usual exploration of science fiction to deliver his first full horror feature, Evil Eye (Mal de Ojo). Ezban uses his sci-fi origins as an entry point into a horror fairy tale that blends Dominican myth and Mexican folklore with modern sensibilities for an emotionally charged, witchy story full of blood.
Parents Rebecca (Samantha Castillo) and Guillermo (Arap Bethke) grow increasingly worried over sickly young daughter Luna (Ivanna Sofia Ferro), who’s becoming increasingly resistant to treatment for her illness. They pack her up along with neglected older sibling Nala (Paola Miguel) and head to the countryside. Isaac Ezban's "Evil Eye" ("Mal de Ojo") welcomes and reassures audiences with grandmotherly comforts like a folkloric horror tale before nap time. Co-writers Junior Rosario and Edgar San Juan help Ezban summon brujas (basically witches) and terrify infirm children with witchy production value fit for the grimmest fairy tale books. "Evil Eye" explores Dominican campfire stories that drip of slime-green goo and adolescent curiosities about the dark arts. Ezban's filmmaking is a warm genre blanket that wraps around viewers, as the soothing bonds of bloodlines turn treacherous the farther we press into whimsically malevolent cultural influences.
Littlest Luna (Ivanna Sofia Ferro) suffers from an affliction that her parents will do anything to cure. Mother Rebecca (Samantha Castillo) and father Guillermo (Arap Bethke) have enough to worry about as their rental complex is ravaged by a sickness that continually infects children — luckily Luna and older sister Nala (Paola Miguel) remain unaffected,...

Evil Eye is a creepy tale that blends modern horror with classic folktales. When her sister Luna’s (Ivana Sofia Ferro) illness takes a turn for the worse, Nala's (Paula Miguel) parents decide on a last resort strategy and take the family out to the countryside to stay with their estranged grandmother. Nala’s mother Rebecca (Samantha Castillo) has kept her relationship with her mother somewhat mysterious. This is the first time the girls and their father are meeting the woman.
As the parents take off to investigate treatment options, they leave the girls in the care of Grandmother Josefa (Ofelia Medina). Luna largely seems fine with it. As a younger child, she is fairly easy to please and there is plenty of nature to explore on the grounds of the large home. Nala, on the other hand, immediately hates it. No wifi, no friends, nothing to do. Added...

In our humble opinion, the best thing that a regional film festival can do for its program is include a block of films devoted to genre and fantastic cinema. Hola Mexico Film Festival, the largest Mexican Film Festival outside of Mexico, does exactly that. Their Nocturna program may be a small part of the overall program but they have programmed the best that the Mexican genre scene has to offer. The program includes Satanic Hispanics, Huesera (Michelle Garza Cervera) and Mal de ojo (Isaac Ezban). On top of that, there is the Batman movie that you didn't know you needed until now: La Mujer Murcielago (Batwoman). Batwoman is called to...

The Elderly, a film I rather enjoyed this Summer, will open the festival while the much anticipated horror flick, Evil Eye, from our friend Isaac Ezban is slated to close out the festival. Other Spanish-language films include The Passenger, the first film from the duo behind The Elderly, Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez, and Huesera, the Tribeca award winner from Michelle Garza Cervera. Other festival faves include The Harbinger, Something in the Dirt, Watcher and Holy Shit! There are a couple rep screenings worth noting - Bubba Ho-tep and Evil Dead 2 - but what really has our attention is the Ghostwatch: A 30th Anniversary...

Here's the international trailer for Isaac Ezban's first foray into full on horror, Mal de ojo (Evil Eye), and he's done and a gone a full header into the pool. Nala, a 13-year-old girl from the city, travels with her family to her grandmother´s home in the countryside, to try to find a cure for her little sister´s mysterious illness… But she´ll soon find her granny is not exactly what she seems... Mal de ojo producer Cinepolis debuted the poster for Isaac Ezban's upcoming horror flick last night. With the pandemic still impeding world travel, the Cannes Film Festival chose five key cities for its satellite events, with Mexico City, Beijing, Melbourne, Seoul and Tokyo screening a selection of titles world premiering at the French event.
From July 8 to 16, Mexico City’s Diana arthouse cinema, of giant exhibition circuit Cinepolis, has hosted a dozen Cannes titles that were not available online.

“That lady is wearing a wig!” is the first thought that comes to me at the start of Parallel… Shortly thereafter, the film throws up an interesting conceit and, aside from the wig, this film is extremely professionally made. It is a sci-fi mind bender with similar ambition to Looper.
A group of friends have created a parking app, and they are trying to seal the big deal, but it all goes wrong, and they lose out. The banter among the gang is believable and funny. The characters are likable and believable as people. There is a bouncy, fun, Ocean’s 11 vibe to a lot of the gang’s hijinks.

We're just over a week away from the kick-off of a Summer of Chills over at Shudder. Here is a reminder of what is coming in June, and let us tell you it will be a great month for horror fans. First of all, the originals premiering this month are all top shelf. June kicks off with Caveat then the recovered Romero film The Amusement Park, followed by Superdeep, An Unquiet Grave and ending with Canadian horror comedy Vicious Fun. But do not discount the additions to the Shudder library this month either. There's Refn's Neon Deamon, the daddy of all zombie movies Night of the Living Dead, Clint Howard in Evilspeak, the awesome Kiwi horror comedy Housebound, Isaac Ezban's sci-fi horror The Similars, our...

Netflix is about to introduce one of Mexico’s most legendary fictional families to the English-speaking world with “We Are the Nobles,” a new U.S. film adaptation of Mexican sensation “Nosotros los Nobles” (The Noble Family).
Eight years ago, Gaz Alazraki’s family comedy became a certified blockbuster, and still ranks as the second highest-grossing Mexican film of all time, behind “Instructions Not Included.” When Netflix was getting into original production outside of the U.S., its first effort was the series “Club of Crows,” created by Alazraki and inspired by his cinema super-hit.
Netflix is co-producing with Alazraki, who produced and directed the original, and Chris Columbus, Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe from 26th Street Pictures, with whom the streamer has a larger overall deal, which also includes an untitled Chupacabra film with Jonas Cuarón, son and frequent collaborator of Alfonso Cuarón. Parallel is a new sci-fi from Mexican filmmaker Isaac Ezban, and features Swedish actor Martin Wallström in the leading role, and to we had the pleasure of speaking to the actor to mark the film’s release. Wallström talks to us on Zoom about the project and what lured him in, and compares himself to his character and how vital it is that he is able to understand the motives (some of which are questionable to say the least). We also ask him about his time spent on Mr. Robot alongside Academy Award winner Rami Malek, and ow sad he was for that experience to end – though he admits it was the right time. We also chat about Stellan Skarsgard, who he loves, and we love, and basically this turns into a Stellan love-in. Enjoy!

A certain odd feeling probably crossed your mind as you’re dashing past a building. You might still experience this occasionally. That is if the building sports a glass front entrance or window. Catching your reflection, you might first think,” Ugh, bad hair day” or “ I’d better just have a salad for lunch.”. But if you’re not in a mad hurry you may wonder if you’ve got an exact twin somewhere. Or taking it further, what if there’s another “me” in an almost identical “now”. And is this reflection a window into that duplicate world? That’s an idea that’s been explored in many fantasy anthology TV shows, though an even more famous use of that idea was on the original “Star Trek” TV show, you know the one with an evil Spock sporting a sinister goatee. Now that notion is taken up a few...

"This is the biggest unfair advantage in human history." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for a sci-fi thriller titled Parallel, from filmmaker Isaac Ezban. This originally premiered in 2018 at all the fall genre fests: FrightFest, Morbido, Sitges, Utopia, and a few others including Fantasia in Montreal. A group of friends stumble upon a mirror that serves as a portal to a "multiverse", but soon discover that importing knowledge from the other side in order to better their lives brings increasingly dangerous consequences. Whod've thought?! The film stars Aml Ameen, Martin Wallström, Georgia King, Mark O’Brien, Alyssa Diaz, with David Harewood and Kathleen Quinlan. I dig the setup and the intro to the parallel universe, but I'm worried it will get really cheesy when bad things start happening. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Isaac Ezban's Parallel, direct from Vertical's YouTube: A group of friends stumble upon...

The movie will release in theaters and on demand on Dec. 11.
“Parallel” follows four friends who find a mirror that serves as a portal to a “multiverse.” But they quickly find out that getting information from the other side to better their lives can have lethal consequences. The cast includes Martin Wallström (“Mr. Robot”), Aml Ameen (“I May Destroy You”), Georgia King (“Devs”) and Mark O’Brien (“Ready or Not”).
The movie marks the English-language feature debut for Ezaban, a Mexican director known for “The Incident” and “The Similars.”

Ahead of the UK premiere screening of Parallel at Arrow Video FrightFest Halloween – which takes place at Cineworld, Leicester Square on November 3rd 2018, director Isaac Ezban discusses the film, making his first English-language feature and directing from someone else’s script.
Parallel is the first film you didn’t write yourself (Scott Blaszak did) but it feels so like one from your heart – dealing with the ramifications of identity, life-shattering decision-making and the possibilities of an endless universe as also explored in The Incident and The Similars?
Yes, that its right, I had many firsts on this one: first movie in English, first movie outside of my country with a completely new crew, first studio film, first film in Canada, and first film I didn´t write, and all those firsts added up to an amazing experience. Mexican filmmaker Isaac Ezban definitely has a type. After impressing festival audiences with his debut feature The Incident, a film about people stuck in an eternal moment, and The Similars, in which identities being to shift when a group of strangers find themselves stuck waiting at a bus stop, it's pretty clear where his interests lay. Ezban's fascination with the ramifications of identity, decision making, and the possibilities of an endless universe makes another, perhaps more coherent appearance in his newest film, Parallel. Ezban's first English language feature, Parallel is the story of four friends who stumble upon a passage to infinite dimensions in their attic, and how they utilize this new, unnatural power. The short take? Not well. More an exploration of the ethics...

Yesterday, Deadline reported that our friend Isaac Ezban (The Similars and the upcoming Parrallel) will direct the adaptation of Dan Simmons' 1991 novel Summer of Night for Sony Pictures. The book revolves around a series of hauntingly sinister events that threaten a Midwestern town as a group of young teens unearths a centuries-old evil prophecy of biblical proportions. As far as trends go we of the Amblin vintage are happy to see this resurgence in horror films with young casts. Where there is success the gravitational pull on greenlighting projects reaches out to anything remotely related. The new sci-fi horror film “The Similars” takes audiences onto a mysterious journey where paranoia runs rampant. Set on a rainy night in a Mexico City bus station in October, 1968, eight people start experiencing a strange phenomenon. Threatened by fear and unexplained seizures, the strangers show the best and worst of themselves as they try to unravel the condition that’s invading each of them like a virus. It has garnered comparisons to “The Twilight Zone” and “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” The film stars Gustavo Sánchez Parra (“Amores Perros”), Fernando Becerril (“The Mask of Zorro”), Cassandra Ciangherotti (“Even the Rain”), Luis Alberti (“The Golden Dream”), Humberto Busto (“Never on a Sunday”) and more.
