What is a TV “comedy” in 2023? In an era of blurred genres, it’s not so cut and dry anymore. Opening Variety’s “A Night in the Writer’s Room,” Variety’s Michael Schneider asked the nine comedy writers on stage to raise their hand if their show features a death. Most did. He followed up by asking, how many of those deaths were murders?
Many kept their hands up high — but holding his hand the highest was “Only Murders in the Building” co-creator John Hoffman “I feel like that’s the beauty of [comedy], that you can kind of do anything … pick a world, be specific about it, be stupid about it, and then you’re good,” Hoffman said of the ability now on television to stretch the definition of comedy.
“It takes a lot of work to subtract comedy from real life,” echoed Boots Riley (“I’m a Virgo”) in...

This post contains spoilers for “Wahoo!,” this week’s episode of Reservation Dogs, which is now streaming on Hulu.
Among the great things about Reservation Dogs is that there are no strict storytelling rules. Anything goes in a series which easily toggles between kitchen sink drama, magical realism, and broad comedy, sometimes within the same scene. If an idea fits both the needs of a given story and the series’ larger themes about Indigenous culture, then it’s in, no fuss, no muss. So nobody really worries about why, say,...

Exclusive: One day after the Season 1 finale of Reservation Dogs launched on FX on Hulu, the dramady opened up its writers room for Season 2 – and they’re going large.
Almost doubling in size, the all-Indigenous staffed room will also see star Devery Jacobs stepping behind the camera too for the next season.
“She’s made films and it’s something that she’s always wanted,” Reservation Dogs creator Sterlin Harjo told Deadline about the actress, who portrays Elora Danan on the acclaimed dramedy. “I found myself on set, sometimes we would lean on her, like there would be something that Elora Danan was going through and we would go to Devery for the answer and she would give us this very thoughtful answer,” the showrunner said.
“Sometimes she would even bring the issue up to us, like you know, something that she felt like Elora wouldn’t do or needed to do,...

“Everything in the city is better, everyone sticks to themselves, nobody fucks with anybody else,” says former turf rival Jackie (Elva Guerra) to Elora (Devery Jacobs) in the Season 1 finale of Reservation Dogs as the duo head to a new life in California. “Sounds dope,” replies Elora with an almost total lack of conviction.
Renewed earlier this month for a second season on FX on Hulu, the Sterlin Harjo created and Taika Waititi executive produced Indigenous dramady certainly left a number of cliffhangers of sorts out there in its Migizi Pensoneau penned “Satvrday” finale – and not just did Uncle Brownie (Gary Farmer) really beat off a tornado hitting Okmulgee, Oklahoma
What’s next for Elora down the road? What happens to Bear (D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai), Cheese (Lane Factor) and Willie Jack (Paulina Alexis) after the trio stayed behind and left the Golden State as a mere dream?

“The Simpsons” boss explains the major death: “We’re not the kind of show that does these really horrific things to its characters" "It was something that would be a good exploration of the characters," says exec producer Al Jean. "I thought it’d be good to say, 'This is what people think of heaven but it’s not exactly what you’re going to get—it’s more what you do on Earth that matters.'…. If you look back at the clues we gave, everything adds up, so I would find that satisfying. I wouldn’t feel like I was misled.” He adds: "We didn’t want a crazy death, or anything shocking, just true human emotion.” Plus: Some fans were disappointed, Krusty the Clown isn’t a strong enough character to warrant an entire episode, and in defense of the major death. “The Simpsons”/“Family Guy” crossover:...

It turns out that the Daily Show's recent segment addressing the debate over the Washington Redskins' name was a bad experience for participants on both sides. Migizi Pensoneau, a Native American who appeared in the face-off with Redskins fans, wrote in an essay for the Missoula Independent that he felt threatened when he and other Native Americans attended a Redskins Nation tailgate for the show. "There were points during that hourlong experience where I actually was afraid for my life," Pensoneau wrote. "I have never been so blatantly threatened, mocked or jeered. It was so intense, so full of vitriol
