Earlier this month, Deadline kicked off its Hollywood Contraction series by checking in with the acting community to see whether opportunities have picked up since the end of the strikes.
The response wasn’t so positive. On top of fewer shows in the works and the disappearance of pilot season, the available acting gigs are paying less than they used to amid rising cost of living, making it hard for many working actors to afford their rent or mortgage and support their families.
So we went to the front lines to the people who would know best — casting directors– to ask about the contraction going on in the industry, and whether the fears are justified. Though just about everybody acknowledges that change is happening, they also remain optimistic about the future.

“Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie” and “The Holdovers” were among the film winners at the 39th annual Casting Society Artios Awards.
The ceremony honors top casting in the year’s films, TV and theater. The celebrations were in person for the first time in three years, taking place in Los Angeles and New York City with hosts Niecy Nash-Betts and comedian Alex Edelman dividing up emcee duties between the cities. There was also a ceremony for casting directors in London.
With the newly added Academy Award for casting, the night certainly was a celebration. Starting in 2026, there will be a prize for best achievement in casting, the culmination of a campaign for recognition that has taken decades.

Charlene Lee and Claire Koonce want actors to succeed. At Clck casting, which they founded in 2019 after working together on various projects, they share similar work ethics and values. “Charlene and I really focus on inclusivity, authenticity and kindness,” says Koonce. “We feel there’s a lot of talent in this town. And the way that every single person is treated throughout the casting process is important to us. We want to cast authentically and inclusively and do quality work, but kindly.”
That skillset came in handy when the pair were tasked with casting “Beef,” Netflix’s heralded limited series starring Ali Wong and Steven Yeun as Amy and Danny, strangers who continue to antagonize each other after a random road rage incident.

Much like his character, George, on the Netflix series “Beef,” actor Joseph Lee is also a fine artist. But that wasn’t necessarily why Lee found playing George so rewarding. “I think him being an artist might have just been another outfit for me,” Lee tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “It could have just been just another cardigan that I wore on the show. That really wasn’t like the priority for me.”
Instead, Lee explains, the fact that George was an artist meant he had some personality traits Lee could understand. “There’s a certain layer of sensitivity, insecurity, and the struggle to be vulnerable that I really connected with on that level,” Lee adds “Those are the kinds of elements that I really wanted to extrapolate with George.”

“I don’t think ‘Beef’ is locked for the win like some do, but it will definitely have been watched by the industry,” says Gold Derby user forwardswill in our forums. That’s part of an ongoing discussion about the Netflix series’s Emmy chances. It received critical acclaim for its story of two strangers (Steven Yeun and Ali Wong) locked in a feud after a road rage incident. But is it the front-runner to win Best Limited Series? If not, what is?
“The ‘Beef’ hype died down a bit but what will even beat it? ‘Dahmer’?” wonders Victor. That’s actually what our odds say. “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” is the odds-on favorite according to the consensus of all Gold Derby users who have placed their bets here in our predictions center. But things look different when you consider Gold Derby’s staff Editors and the Expert journalists...
