Dark Winds, AMC'scritically acclaimed crime drama, recently returned with its highly anticipated third season in March 2025. Based on the Leaphorn & Chee novel series by Tony Hillerman, the television series follows the lives of Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and his fellow officers in the Navajo Police Force. The television series is an exciting amalgamation of the Western and detective genres, using the archetypes and tropes of each style in fresh new ways. Most importantly, Dark Winds gives Native Americans, specifically the Navajo, a unique and comprehensive voice to express their stories.
Taking place in the Navajo nation in the 1970s, Dark Winds unapologetically shows the United States' mistreatment of the Navajo people while also portraying the joyous elements of Indigenous lives and culture. Instead of taking the sidekick role common in Westerns, the story centers on Indigenous protagonists and stories. By creating a cast of Native American characters in addition to the entirely Indigenous writer's room,...

Dark Winds takes place in the early 1970s in the Four Corners area of America, primarily on the Navajo Nation Reservation in New Mexico. The series features a mainly Indigenous American cast led by Zahn McClarnon as Joe Leaphorn, a lieutenant of the Navajo Tribal Police. Beside Joe are Bernadette "Bern" Manuelito and Jim Chee, who help Joe investigate mysterious deaths and disappearances. The AMC series has a small, tight-knit cast but nonetheless features supporting actors and guest stars who add more complexity than what Joe, Bern and Jim already have.
The first two seasons of Dark Winds feature characters from all walks of life, even those who have only ever lived in the same town. From clear antagonists to nuanced heroes, it's difficult to say that Dark Winds has a black-and-white worldview. There may be clear "good guys" and "bad guys," but this is a gray world in which Joe is battling demons.

If you were roped into a high-stakes hostage situation at a retro diner out in the desert, which character would you want to assume? The heroic waitress? The badass bank robber? The Last Stop in Yuma County centers on just that very idea, with these two characters in mind as a tense thriller plays out in real time against a throwback-Arizona backdrop. Veteran character actor Richard Brake (Game of Thrones) plays one of the robbers, and horror queen Jocelin Donahue (Insidious: Chapter 2) tackles the challenging role of the ever-so-traumatized hostess who runs the Yuma County rest stop.
We recently caught up with Brake and Donahue in separate interviews to learn more about their darkly comedic Western thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County, directed by Francis Galluppi and also starring Jim Cummings, plus a handful of other household names.

There's a rare type of film that breaks halfway through or so, where the story we've been following suddenly shifts into something totally unexpected, or outright cuts to new characters completely. Of course, Alfred Hitchock's Psycho is famous for this, and it seems to be most prominent in horror films like that Audition, One Cut of the Dead, From Dusk Till Dawn, The Empty Man, and Zach Cregger's recent film, Barbarian. There's a trend brewing in Hollywood these days among promising indie filmmakers. Actually, it's been happening for decades, come to think of it, but two recent examples are worthy of note due to their sort of parallel journeys. First came actor-turned-filmmaker Zach Cregger, whose hit film Barbarian paved the way for a reportedly outrageous bidding war for his next project, an ensemble feature called Weapons. More recently, indie filmmaker Francis Galluppi, in his feature film directing debut, has been turning heads with his deliciously tense thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County, which has finally hit the masses this week. Its success thus far has surely led to his helming of an upcoming high-profile film installment in the timeless Evil Dead franchise.

A Western crime thriller with a a cup of Coen, a slice of Tarantino, and a side of Peckinpah/Lumet, the debut feature film of writer-director Francis Galluppi is as sharp as it is stunning. Starring Jim Cummings and a murderers row of talent, Yuma County is one this year’s best films and signals the arrival of a new voice.
To celebrate, Halloweenies executive producer and co-host Michael Roffman sits down with Galluppi and Cummings to discuss the making of the film. They also chew on the timeless quality of one-location movies, why we love a good freak out, the energy surrounding Galluppi’s new Evil Dead, and their favorite moral dilemma films.

Thirty years ago, Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and cinema was never the same. Tarantino’s 1994 epic-crime-pretzel-meets-pop-monologue masterpiece smashed open one door after another, and an inevitable result is that we saw a great many movies in the ’90s that were Tarantino knockoffs — underworld capers of baroque violence and exuberant scuzz, movies that not only bent the dirty hedonism of film noir into new shapes but did it with a special brand of self-consciousness, a “Look at what we’re up to!” effrontery.
That attitude became part of the landscape, though you could also say that after a while, as a literal genre, the Tarantino knockoff faded away. But “The Last Stop in Yuma County,” a real-time, single-location crime thriller set at a gas-food-lodging stop in sunbaked Arizona, is what you might call an exercise in Tarantino knockoff nostalgia. It’s a lean,...

First things first: Yes, Francis Galluppi is going to be directing a new movie in the “Evil Dead” franchise. And no, he can’t tell you anything about it. He can, however, prove his bona fides as a horror and suspense fan in our Zoom interview by pointing to the “Evil Dead” poster in his office and the “three Necronomicons on my desk.”

A roadside diner. Not just a place to see peeling upholstery and rodent traps, and indulge in the occasional sugary slice, but a genuine icon of Americana from Edward Hopper to “Frasier.” A diner is the great, anxiety-drenched stage where most of first-time feature director Francis Galluppi’s “The Last Stop in Yuma County” takes place, and, though this thriller is packed with memorable characters, the diner itself might be its greatest.
“The Petrified Forest” meets Tarantino and the Coen brothers, “The Last Stop in Yuma County” revels in its Americana like few films in recent memory. There’s an olive green Ford Pinto, Roy Orbison’s “Crying” played from a jukebox, a sheriff with ’70s sideburns, and, of course, a couple of bank robbers on the run. There’s the oafish Travis (Nicholas Logan), who inquires about the location of the facilities with a repeated “Where’s the shitter?...

Jim Cummings both stars in and executive produces The Last Stop in Yuma County, diving into a tense hostage situation. Cummings embraced the challenge of playing a cowardly character in the film and enjoyed the camaraderie with the cast members. Though drawn to directing, Cummings found acting in a project he didn't create to be liberating, acknowledging the challenges in indie filmmaking.
Acclaimed indie filmmaker Jim Cummings is stepping in front of the camera for the crime thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County. It’s easy to see why writer/director Francis Galluppi is already set to helm a new Evil Dead movie in the wake of his feature debut, The Last Stop in Yuma County. There’s a savage sense of humor and mean streak to Galluppi’s tense, dusty neo-noir western, even as it escalates the pressure cooker scenario. It helps that the film’s charismatic ensemble cast is filled with horror stalwarts, one that Galluppi fearlessly culls through with raucous glee, making for an insanely fun single-location thriller.

Richard Brake shines as a calm and calculating villain in The Last Stop in Yuma County. The movie's script captivated Brake similarly to his hit 2022 film Barbarian, keeping him engrossed as he read it like a novel. Brake loved working with Jocelin Donahue again and shared his emotions about Brad Dourif's retirement.
Richard Brake continues his terrifying villainous reign on screen with The Last Stop in Yuma County. Since making his breakout turns in Batman Begins as Wayne family killer Joe Chill and the 2005 Doom movie adaptation as Portman, the Welsh actor has steadily built an impressive filmography, largely comprised of antagonistic characters. Some of his more notable include Rob Zombie's 31, in which he starred as Doom-Head, Game of Thrones, in which he was the original Night King actor, and the breakout 2022 horror hit Barbarian.

Francis Galluppi’s tense and darkly funny The Last Stop in Yuma County begins with an unnamed traveling knife salesman (Jim Cummings) rolling up at the titular Arizona rest stop, looking to fill his tank. The place is nothing more than a couple of gas pumps, a tiny motel, and an old-school diner, complete with red leather booths and an infinite supply of strong black coffee. Despite the locale’s humble appearance, it’s about to become the site of a thrilling showdown that finds a fascinating mix of misfit characters caught in the crossfire.
The attendant, Vernon (Faizon Love), gives our protagonist the bad news first: They don’t have a drop of gas left to sell and the next stop isn’t for a hundred miles. There’s no way the salesman’s car will make it that far, so he’s stuck here until the next delivery arrives.

"Take him out! Make a show of it." Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for a crime action thriller film titled Red Right Hand, which is not connected with the video game series Red Dead Redemption. The film is now set to open soon in late February, without any festival premieres or any other appearances before. Orlando Bloom stars as Cash, who is trying to live an honest and quiet life, but when the small town crime kingpin "Big Cat" forces him back into her services, he proves capable of anything to protect the town and the only family he has left. Andie MacDowell co-stars as the big boss "Big Cat", which seems like some intriguing casting. Also with Garret Dillahunt, Brian Geraghty, James Lafferty, Jeremy Ratchford, Nicholas Logan, Scott Haze, and Alexandra Park. This looks like another standard gritty Appalachia crime thriller, with plenty of shoot outs and arguments and backcountry rendezvous and more.

AMC is heading into more Dark Winds.
The cable network has renewed the crime drama for a third season, coming a couple of weeks after season two finished its run.
The series is planned to premiere in early 2025, a noticeable shift from the summer premiere of its first two seasons, but understandable given the writers and actors strike.
It comes after Dark Winds made its debut on Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max service as part of a two-month pop-up.
Dark Winds stars Zahn McClarnon, Kiowa Gordon and Jessica Matten.
The first season of the series, which is produced by AMC Studios, drew 2.2M viewers on AMC for its June 2022 launch in Live+3 ratings. The company said that the second season averaged 1.7M viewers each week in Live+3, per Nielsen and saw “significant” viewership and acquisition gains from season one on AMC+.
