The hotly anticipated match took place at the sold-out Old Trafford stadium in Manchester – welcoming back over 63,000 fans to the same venue that hosted the very first Soccer Aid for Unicef match in 2006. The match ended 4-2 to Soccer Aid World XI, with the team keeping the overall lead with 7-5 wins since the inaugural 2006 match.

Manchester, Feb 24 (Ians) Before this Thursday, Barcelona enjoyed the upper hand in their head-to-head series against Manchester United, winning 6 out of the 15 clashes across all competitions in Europe.
In the Champions League, Manchester United, the dominant force in England a couple of decades back, have met Spanish giants Barcelona 10 times, of which the Red Devils have won just once. That win came way back in 2008 when a Paul Scholes goal in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal put the English club in the final. United went on to win that final in what remains their last Champions League triumph.
They have a better record in Europa League in which the two teams have met twice. The first game ended in a 2-2 draw at Camp Nou and the match set a Europa League attendance record of 90,255 fans in the stadium. In the second leg of the same tie,...

Soccer Aid for Unicef 2020 has, thanks to the generosity of ITV viewers, raised a record £11,552,577 – the most the match has ever raised in the history of the show, which was broadcast exclusively live on ITV and Stv.
For the first time in the match’s history, donations were matched by both the UK government and Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance, meaning every £1 donated becomes £3 – up to £3 million – until Tuesday 6th October 2020.
This year’s teams of celebrities and former professional footballers played for ‘Generation Covid’, and the money raised will help Unicef stop the spread of coronavirus and limit the impact on children’s lives around the world.
The match, which was played behind-closed-doors at Manchester United Fc’s Old Trafford, ended 1-1 and so went to penalties. The game marked a return to the North West following last year’s game at Chelsea Fc’s Stamford Bridge.

Some 3.4 billion people — almost half of the world’s 7.6B population — is expected to watch the FIFA World Cup that starts Thursday, as the soccer tournament, which takes place this year in Russia, remains one of the world’s most popular media events.
Latin America is expected to have the largest number of viewers, according to research company GlobalWebIndex, followed by the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific and Europe. However, thanks to an embarrassing defeat against Trinidad & Tobago, the U.S. won’t be competing in the World Cup for the first time since 1986, a major blow to one of the largest TV markets in the world (albeit one hamstrung by time differences this time around). It’s thought that less than a quarter of the population in the U.S. will tune in to watch any games, and those may be largely expats and those cheering on the Mexican team.

Manchester United unveiled their third signing of the summer transfer window last night after finalising a deal for Sporting Lisbon’s versatile defender Marcos Rojo, who has arrived on a £16 million deal with winger Nani heading to his former club on loan as part of the arrangement.
United were in the market for a new centre-back following the departures of Rio Ferdinand and captain Nemanja Vidic, with Rojo also able to fill in at left-back – another area of concern following the sales of Alexander Buttner and Patrice Evra, as well as the injury sustained by new signing Luke Shaw.
Rojo will hopefully help bring stability to a defence that looks paper thin at present and has the experience to do so, having helped Argentina reach this summer’s World Cup final, playing all six games as his country progressed through the finals in Brazil.

A ferocious, vociferous and venomous rivalry, it matters not where either side are in the table, the only thing that matters when Man Utd and Liverpool face each other is victory during the heated meetings with their bitter north-west counterparts. Whilst both sets of supporters spit absolute venom at each during these crunch matches – with new public enemies having to be found following the departures of Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez – there have been a couple of players who choose to stay perfectly quiet for fear of reminding anyone about how close they came to pulling on the jersey of their most hated rivals.

With just a little over three weeks to go until the summer transfer window clangs shut for four months, Manchester United have been noticeably inactive in recent weeks. The squad that finished a disappointing seventh under David Moyes last season is in obvious need of an overhaul and there isn’t long left to make the required changes.
United have already signed Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw from Athletic Bilbao and Southampton, respectively, but over a month has passed since the Red Devils last dipped into the transfer market, and that has been cause for alarm in some sections of the Red Devils’ support base.
Rivals Liverpool announced their seventh signing of the summer yesterday while Chelsea too have strengthened significantly by bringing in Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa, and unless United sanction at least a couple more transfers, they run the very real risk of...

Manchester United face another season of transition in 2014-15. They are about to start a Premier League campaign with a new manager with new ideas for the second time in as many years, while the ‘old guard’ in Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Ryan Giggs and captain Nemanja Vidic have all left the club.
David Moyes has been sacked after just 10 months into his position following a bitterly disappointing season that saw the Red Devils finish seventh, and in his place has been appointed successor Louis van Gaal. van Gaal has just guided the Netherlands team to a 3rd place finish at the World Cup finals and has now taken over at Old Trafford.
The Dutchman will be expected to guide United back to the top of English football where their fans believe they belong, and the ambitions will be to qualify for the Champions...

This summer is set to be a very exciting one for Manchester United fans, not only because of the arrival of charismatic new manager Louis van Gaal, but because he is set to lead the recruitment drive that United have needed since Cristiano Ronaldo left for Real Madrid in 2009.
After enduring their worst ever Premier League campaign last season which culminated in a seventh placed finish, United are set for a summer of upheaval as first team players move through the door in both directions. Losing the experienced quartet of Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra from the first team over the summer so far means that United are going to need to add quality in several departments.
The main issue is the central midfield area, which has long been considered the weakness of the 13 time Premier League champions. Whilst Ander...

The festival that is the World Cup may be over but don’t despair football fans – the Premier League will be back on our TV screens in a little under a month and for Manchester United supporters that couldn’t come soon enough.
United endured a miserable campaign under David Moyes last time round but with Louis van Gaal in charge there’s every reason for optimism as we prepare ourselves for the opening round of fixtures on August 16, when the Red Devils take on Swansea.
By then, United’s starting XI could look vastly different to the one we’ve grown accustomed to down the years with this summer set to be one of change for the Old Trafford giants. Club captain Nemanja Vidic has gone, as have fellow stalwarts Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand, while Ryan Giggs has finally stepped into retirement.

Patrice Evra has finally completed his move to Juventus, ending his eight-year association with Manchester United, according to the bbc. The Frenchman announced his intentions to move to Italy earlier this month, and the move has now gone through for £1.2 million.
Evra had signed a one-year contract extension to stay at Old Trafford for another season back in May, and was expected to deputise for new signing Luke Shaw, who arrived from Southampton this summer. However, he has now left the club, leaving United with just one recognised left-back following the departure of Alexander Buttner last month.
Evra made 273 appearances for the Red Devils after moving from Monaco in January 2006, and won five Premier League titles, three League Cups and the Champions League. In October 2011, he was at the centre of a racism row after being abused by former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who was subsequently banned for eight matches.

Manchester United may only have signed Luke Shaw from Southampton this summer, but they are now in search of another left-back following Patrice Evra’s decision to move to Juventus. The veteran fullback has told club officials he wants to join the Italian side, but has stopped short of handing in a transfer request.
Shaw became the world’s fourth-most expensive defender when United paid £27 million for his services at the end of June, but, following the departure of Alexander Buttner to Dynamo Moscow, is set to be the Red Devil’s only available option in the left-back position.
It’s a headache for incoming manager Louis van Gaal, who must have thought he had consolidated the left-side of his defence by acquiring a player who has been tipped by many to go on and become one of the world’s best in his position. However, now...

Juventus are set to make a shock bid for Manchester United’s veteran left-back Patrice Evra, according to talkSPORT.
Evra only signed a one-year contract extension at Old Trafford in May but the Italian giants are refusing to give up hope of landing their man, and have taken encouragement from the fact the Premier League side have recently signed Luke Shaw from Southampton.
That means Evra could face limited playing time at the club next season, and Juve want to use that to their advantage by luring the fullback to Italy with the promise of regular playing time.
However, having sold Alexander Buttner to Dynamo Moscow already this summer, United will be desperate not to lose Evra, and would be left with no cover at left-back should the Frenchman move to Italy. Manager Louis van Gaal has very few defensive options as it is, having also allowed...

Luis Suarez’s exit from Liverpool appears to be moving ever closer. Barcelona are seen as the frontrunners for his signature with numerous national newspapers claiming that the striker is the Catalan club’s top transfer target.
After biting Giorgio Chiellini in Uruguay’s final World Cup group game, Suarez was handed a four-month ban from all football related activity. It means he cannot play, train or even step foot in a stadium. However this has clearly not deterred potential buyers.
A transfer fee of £80 million has been reported by The Daily Mail, while others believe that Barcelona are looking to pay half that amount but with the makeweight of Alexis Sanchez. Either way, Suarez’s actions have had little effect on his price tag.
Suarez has now also apologised for the biting of Chiellini, an act Barcelona would have undoubtedly been eager for him to do.

Manchester United are expected to confirm the signing of Southampton’s 18 year old left back Luke Shaw later today, with a reported fee of £30 million, according to Sky Sports News.
Shaw is a long term United target and offers the attributes of defending and attacking from his position. United’s own Patrice Evra has performed admirably in that role over the years, but with the Frenchman now aged 33, Shaw is expected to replace him. The price tag will instantly elevate Shaw into being the world’s most expensive teenager, although given his young age United will expect that investment to pay for itself over potentially a very long time with the club. Shaw is an astute young player, honoured in the left back position for the 2013/2014 Pfa team of the year. He earned that award after an impressive season with Southampton, pushing the club to an 8th place Premier League finish.

FIFA have handed Uruguay and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez a four month ban from football, in addition to a nine match international ban which ends his World Cup immediately, after he bit Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini in Uruguay’s third World Cup group stage match on Tuesday. The independent disciplinary committee who reviewed the incident decided that the 27 year old Suarez was guilty of misconduct.
The four month ban now throws into question Suarez’s future with Liverpool: he had been widely tipped for a big summer transfer to Barcelona or Real Madrid, but the terms of his ‘ban from footballing activity or administration’ could put a halt to that move. Conflicting sources are reporting that Suarez may or may not be able to transfer.
What we do know for certain is that Suarez will be unable to attend any football stadium or training session,...

Southampton starlet Luke Shaw will become the first signing of the Louis van Gaal era with Manchester United on the verge of agreeing a £30 million deal, according to the Daily Star.
Van Gaal has been handed a £200 million warchest by United this summer and will waste no time in spending it, having only been appointed David Moyes’s permanent successor on Monday.
The Dutchman looks set to shake things up at Old Trafford, with the move for Shaw likely meaning the end of Patrice Evra’s career at the Theatre of Dreams.
Evra has been tipped to follow fellow defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic out of the club and has been linked with a move to Juventus recently.
The deal for Shaw also means van Gaal has instantly achieved what predecessor Moyes tried so unsuccessfully to do during his 10 month reign – replace the Frenchman.

With Ashley Cole set to part company with Chelsea this summer, and Patrice Evra set to join Juventus, could our search for a new left-back take a surprising twist?
Since the end of the season, the Red Devils have stepped up their pursuit for a new fullback with some reports claiming we have tabled a huge £27 million bid for Southampton starlet Luke Shaw.
However, the club’s board may now think twice with Cole set to become a free agent this summer when his contract at Stamford Bridge runs down.
Cole wrote on Twitter: “I am weighing up my options for playing next season with my agent.”
“Sadly, it does not look like Chelsea will be one of them.”
There’s no questioning Cole would bring a wealth of experience to our side, having won three Premier League titles, (two with Arsenal, one with Chelsea) as well...

Rio Ferdinand will not be handed a new contract at Manchester United and will be replaced by Germany international Mats Hummels next season.
Ferdinand, who joined from Leeds in August 2002 for a then-British-transfer-record £30 million, had been hoping for a fresh deal, but both the player and club have decided to go in a new direction.
“After 12 fantastic years, I have decided the time is right for me to move on,” Ferdinand has been quoted by the BBC.
And now, Hummels of Borussia Dortmund has been tipped with a move to the Theatre of Dreams as the veteran’s long-term replacement, the Express are reporting this morning.
Hummels, 25, is a right-footed left centre-back and can also slot into defensive midfield. An attacking centre-half, fans will enjoy his adventurous style of play.

Our season ended in underwhelming fashion on Sunday with the 1-1 draw against Southampton underlining the sort of disappointment we’ve all felt throughout the past ten months.
But don’t despair; now is the time to look forward with Louis van Gaal expected to be announced as David Moyes’s successor any day now, while this summer will provide a much-needed opportunity to take stock and re-build.
Watching our neighbours in Blue lift the Premier League yesterday wasn’t easy, but there is still plenty to be optimistic about, with new faces set to make their way to Old Trafford in the coming weeks and months.
Surely the debacle of the last transfer window – in which our only acquisition was Marouane Fellaini – will not be repeated, with van Gaal all set to ring the changes as he looks to take us back to the glory days.

Reports this week have surfaced that Manchester United are planning a £27 million bid for Southampton left-back Luke Shaw.
Shaw has been a long-term target for the club, and is touted as the heir apparent for Patrice Evra, who is out of contract this summer with no guarantees on his future.
The Frenchman may already have played his last game for us, in yesterday’s 1-1 draw with the Saints, and his successor may well have been on the field that day.
Shaw has been impressive for Mauricio Pochettino’s men this season, helping them to a top-10 finish, though there are concerns about the 18-year-old’s valuation.
£27 million is what we paid for Marouane Fellaini last summer, with the midfielder nearly 10 years Shaw’s senior, though the fee does represent the faith we have that the starlet can go on to great things.

Manchester United are in the unusual position of already knowing that current captain Nemanja Vidic won’t be at the club next season. Therefore, David Moyes must decide one who would be the best man to lead the team next season. It’s also likely that a number of other senior players may also move on such as Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and even Robin van Persie.
It’s also reasonably likely that the squad will look quite different next season as Moyes looks to do a rebuilding job of sorts. One player that we all know will be integral to United’s plans next season and beyond is Wayne Rooney, especially now he has signed a new long-term deal – but it remains to be seen if he is seen as having right character for the role.

Manchester United manager David Moyes made up for the disappointments of last summer’s transfer window by signing Juan Mata from Chelsea last week.
Mata is a superb addition – twice named Chelsea Player of the Year, he is expected to revitalise United’s midfield and reverse their ill-fortunes out on the pitch.
And though his acquisition solves some of Moyes’s problems at Old Trafford, his arrival is by no stretch of the imagination an instant fix, and there are still more areas in need of addressing.
Like left-back, for instance, where Patrice Evra is nearing the end of his United career with a summer move back to Monaco reportedly in the pipeline.
The Red Devil’s need for a new full-back has been further emphasised by Fabio’s sale to Cardiff City, following a difficult spell at the Theatre of Dreams for the Brazilian.

Samuel Eto’o became the first Chelsea player since 1954 to hit a hat-trick against Manchester United. A heavy defeat at Stamford Bridge despite Javier Hernandez’s consolation left David Moyes and the Red Devils 14 points off the pace, effectively ending their bid to defend the Premier League title.
Ashley Young drew a low early stop from Petr Cech as United made the better start. Despite that hosts Chelsea went ahead after a quarter of an hour through Eto’o. The veteran African saw his near post shot loop off Michael Carrick and over David De Gea in the opposite corner.
Goalmouth action scarcely followed in this tight, cagey contest. Danny Welbeck scuffed a close range effort straight at Petr Cech late on in the first half after. Cesar Azpilicueta did just enough to put the Red Devils frontman off.

Manchester United travel to Chelsea on Sunday hoping for better than the bore draw the sides produced in August. David Moyes also knows that Jose Mourinho has never lost a home Premier League game in English football. No pressure then.
The Red Devils ship was steadied in their last outing as Moyes ended a run of three successive defeats by being injury-hit Swansea. Mourinho’s Blues meanwhile recorded five straight wins since another tepid goalless draw with Arsenal before Christmas.
United have only one victory in their last six against Chelsea, coincidentally a 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge in October 2012. Sendings off for Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres proved pivotal as the Blues had comeback from 2-0 down to equalize before Javier Hernandez sunk the nine men.

Premier League champions Manchester United steadied the ship with a 2-0 win over Swansea at Old Trafford to end a run of three straight defeats in all competitions.
David Moyes’s first season in charge of the Red Devils so far has made a compelling case for the club needing to reshape its squad. A report in the Mail on Sunday suggests this process will begin in the January transfer window.
Brazilian midfield flop Anderson will be the first to go in a clearout as he nears a reported transfer to Italian Serie A side Fiorentina. Moyes may also send winger Nani back to his native Portugal and former club Sporting Lisbon on loan.
Wilfried Zaha – the last signing made at United by Moyes’s predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson – could leave Old Trafford temporarily too with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looking to take him to Cardiff City.

Second half goals from Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck helped Manchester United end their run of three games without victory and return to winning ways at Old Trafford.
A loss here would have been United’s fourth consecutive defeat for the first time in over 50 years but Valencia’s tap in and Welbeck’s skillful flick ended the champion’s slump under David Moyes.
The game started in slow fashion with Swansea’s Jonjo Shelvey seeing his fourth-minute speculative shot from the edge of the United box easily saved by David de Gea.
A minute later, Shelvey upended Adnan Januzaj and Nemanja Vidic’s connection with the resulting free-kick rose over Gerhard Tremmel’s goal.
United were beginning to show signs of menace and, after Jordi Amat brought Welbeck down on the edge of the box, the scheming Januzaj saw his freekick rebound off the crossbar.

Sunderland have not beaten Manchester United since they last met in the League Cup over 13 years ago. Kevin Phillips’s extra time penalty took the Black Cats into quarter-finals in November 2000 with Red Devils goalscorer Dwight Yorke being sent off.
United have since won 16 of the 20 subsequent encounters that have all come in the Premier League and the other four were drawn. The Black Cats will have home advantage first in this two-legged tie with the winners to face either West Ham United or Manchester City at Wembley.
Gus Poyet has had defensive injuries worrying him, but despite Sunderland’s struggle in the league they remain in both domestic cup competitions. The basement club of the English top flight will be targeting an upset in this first leg similar to their shock win over City in November.

Swansea made history by winning at Old Trafford thanks to Wayne Routledge’s early chip and a late Wilfried Bony header. Manchester United fell at the first Fa Cup hurdle despite Javier Hernandez scoring as substitute Fabio was sent off.
Defeat for the Red Devils – their fifth at home in all competitions this term – increases the pressure on David Moyes. United are still in the Capital One Cup, but look short of strength to defend their Premier League title and make a big splash in the Champions League.
Wayne Rooney joined a lengthy injury list for the hosts as Moyes made six changes from the home loss to Tottenham Hotspur on New Year’s Day. Defenders Nemnaja Vidic and Patrice Evra were rested completely whilst Michael Carrick, David De Gea and Adnan Janzuaj dropped to the bench.
The Red Devils handed rare starts to Anders Lindegaard,...

Manchester United take on Swansea in the Fa Cup third round knowing they have never lost a home meeting with the South Wales side.
A 4-1 away victory for the Red Devils at the Liberty Stadium on the opening day of the Premier League season ensured David Moyes won his first competitive game in charge. Both he and Michael Laudrup have depleted squads for this encounter as United and the Swans are missing players from their attacks.
The Red Devils saw a run of six straight wins in all competitions stopped by Tottenham Hotspur on New Year’s Day. Home form is a concern for Moyes as his team have only record victory in two of the last five at Old Trafford.
Swansea meanwhile are on seven-match winless streak and picked up just a single Premier League point during the festive period.

Last transfer window, there was plenty of talk around various players that David Moyes would look to add to his Manchester United squad, but it was very much a case of plenty of talk, but not enough action – at least not the type of action that ended with a positive result.
The situation ended up being so bad that the lack of players that Man Utd signed proved to be the story rather than the ones they did. One of those stories that never really materialized was the proposed deal to bring Leighton Baines in from Everton, which dominated the media for a good deal of the window.
The Toffees have done superbly this season under Roberto Martinez against the odds – so the chance of them selling Baines is probably considerably lessened – especially since Man Utd would now be seen as a European or Champions League rival to them.

Premier League champions Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have drawn their last two meetings. They start 2014 level on points and next to one another in the table both looking to close the gap on the top four.
David Moyes’s Red Devils have hit fine form in their festive fixtures by recording six successive victories after failing to win the first three matches in December. Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood meanwhile got the second win of his reign against Stoke on Sunday.
Spurs are also buoyed by the fact they won on their last visit to Old Trafford in September 2012. Clint Dempsey netted the winner then, but has re-joined former club Fulham on loan from Mls franchise Seattle Sounders.

United will assess Wayne Rooney’s groin injury that kept him out of the away victory at Norwich last time out. The England talisman has been unable to train and remains doubtful.

A Wayne Rooney-inspired Manchester United came from two goals down to beat Hull City at the Kc Stadium. The Tigers went ahead early through James Chester’s first Premier League goal and extended it through David Meyler.
Chris Smalling pulled one back for the Red Devils nodding in a Rooney set piece. The England talisman then scored the pick of the goals to restore parity. Rooney then started and finished a move that saw Chester put through his own net midway through the second half.
Hosts Hull went ahead with three and a half minutes played from a controversially awarded corner. Replays showed Ahmed Elmohamady’s cross never touched Tom Cleverley. Chester profited nonetheless as he fired home against his former club when fellow defender Alex Bruce knocked down to him.
United’s poor start continued as they were two down inside 15 minutes after some pinball in the penalty area.
