It’s a brand new year, and Deep Cuts Rising is back to spotlight less talked about horror movies. The first installment of 2024 features selections reflecting the month of January.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings feature zombies, a killer New Year’s party and more.
Knife of Ice (1972)
Image: All but too late, Ida Galli (as Evelyn Stewart) spots the knife-wielding killer behind her in Knife of Ice.
Directed by Umberto Lenzi.
Giallo fans have designated both January and July as months for celebrating the genre. So it’s a great time to get acquainted with these stylish mysteries. Novices will naturally be drawn to the more popular and acclaimed filmmakers that gialli have to offer — Dario Argento, Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci — but others like Umberto Lenzi shouldn’t be disregarded.

Novak Djokovic played his first match on US soil in two years, and it was a losing effort in the doubles at the 2023 Cincinnati Masters with Nikola Cacic.
Djokovic elected to sign up for the doubles of the Cincinnati Masters presumably to have a light introduction to competitive tennis again. The Serbian hasn't played since the Wimbledon final, and it will take him a while to find his best form.
It was a pretty solid effort overall from the Serbian team, but they were facing a much better doubles pairing in Jamie Murray and Michael Venus, and it showed. Djokovic predictably had some great moments, but overall they couldn't really match their opponents.
It wasn't the first time Djokovic and Cacic played doubles together as they did it for Serbian in the Davis Cup however, this year's team won't feature Cacic. Novak Djokovic is there, hopeful of leading the team...

Novak Djokovic made a surprise decision to play doubles at the Cincinnati Masters next week, and he learned the fate of his draw on Friday.
After taking almost a month off, Djokovic will play for the first time since his Wimbledon final defeat in mid-July , on Monday when he will be in doubles action at the Cincinnati Masters. He entered the singles and doubles draw which will serve as his sole preparatory tournament for the US Open .
Djokovic will partner fellow Serb Nikola Cacic to take on the experienced doubles pair of Jamie Murray and Michael Venus. It's certainly a case of baptism by fire for Djokovic, who is playing doubles for the first time since Adelaide, at the start of the 2023 season.
Former British No. 1 Murray and American Venus have won three titles as a team this season and reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. In the unlikely scenario, Djokovic and Cacic defy the odds,...

Bianca Andreescu and Michael Venus enjoyed a lot of success in mixed doubles together, but they won't add to it at the 2023 Wimbledon .
Only a few weeks ago, Andreescu and Venus teamed up for mixed doubles at the 2023 Roland Garros in what was the Canadian's first experience with mixed doubles. It was a very successful debut as the two made it all the way to the final.
Although they lost in the final to Miyu Kato and Tim Puetz, the pairing was very happy with their performance, and Andreescu expressed the desire to compete in the mixed doubles also at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships .
During the event, the Canadian experienced a lot of 'frustrating' waiting due to rain delays , and also her career-best result at the grass-court Grand Slam . But after the singles exit, Andreescu won't continue in the mixed doubles.
She isn't the reason for the withdrawal as the reason is Michael Venus' elbow injury.

Bianca Andreescu has shared her desire to enter the mixed doubles event at Wimbledon alongside her Roland Garros partner Michael Venus.
Andreescu and Venus entered the mixed doubles tournament at Roland Garros as alternate participants after being paired together by coach Christophe Lambert. Surprisingly, the duo reached the final but were eventually eliminated by Miyu Kato and Tim Putz across three sets.
For Andreescu, it was her first appearance in a doubles event at a Grand Slam since 2019 as the Canadian player has largely focused on her singles career. However, when asked by reporters about the possibility of returning at Wimbledon alongside Venus in the mixed doubles event, Andreescu seemed positive about the idea.
"We haven't spoken about that yet, but if the time comes and I'm ready to play mixed doubles or I want to play mixed doubles and I'm healthy and all that, then I would love to.

Paris, June 8 (Ians) Japan’s Miyu Kato and Germany’s Tim Puetz clinched the French Open mixed doubles title on Thursday, defeating Bianca Andreescu and Michael Venus 4-6, 6-4, [10-6] in the final, here.
The French Open is Kato’s first Grand Slam title and capped off an emotional week for the 28-year-old Japanese doubles specialist, who was disqualified from the women’s doubles competition after inadvertently hitting a ball girl with a ball in the third-round match.
“It has been really challenging for me for the past few days. I want to thank all the players, coaches, everyone for their heartfelt messages of support,” Kato was quoted as saying by Wta.
Andreescu and Venus climbed from a break down to take the opening set (4-6) but Kato and Puetz struck back to level the match, taking the second set 6-4.

Madrid (Spain), May 2 (Ians) Karen Khachanov kept his cool and beat Andrey Rublev 7-6(8), 6-4 in the fourth-round clash to seal a quarterfinal berth at the Madrid Open, here on Tuesday.
The 10th-seeded Khachanov took control of a closely fought encounter by rallying from 4/6 to claim the first-set tie-break and he carried that momentum to a one-hour, 42-minute victory on Manolo Santana Stadium.
“It’s always tricky to play against each other because on one side we know each other’s games perfectly because we’ve been training together for so many years,” Khachanov was quoted as saying by Atp Tour.
“At the same time, we know what to expect, but also of course a bit nervous to play against each other. We are good friends, but on the court we are rivals. It was all a matter of keeping the serve, and if you have any chances on the return,...

Andrey Rublev took part in the first main draw match of the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters and it resulted in a funny situation.
The Russian teamed up with his fellow compatriot Karen Khachanov in doubles to beat Jamie Murray and Michael Venus 7-5, 6-4 but the funnies moment followed after the match. The doubles match was the first match of the main draw at the Court Rainier III and after that, the first singles main draw match followed.
Borna Coric was about to take on Nicolas Jarry but when entering the court, players encountered someone that they wouldn't expect in the tunnel, Andrey Rublev. The first main draw victor of the day was still there and signing autographs for the fans.
The players' paths inevitably crossed, leading to an amusing encounter. Instead of rushing or appearing flustered, Rublev remained calm and collected, effortlessly sidestepping the incoming athletes while continuing to engage with his fans.

What would you do if you learned that the place you keep seeing in your nightmares is real? If your answer is that you would stay far away from it and try to avoid ever seeing or hearing its name again, you're probably not cut out for this film, nor for anything else on the Fantasia 2020 slate. Michael Venus has described his creation in opposition to the Heimatfilm yet it retains some quaint Germanic qualities, folkloric in style and, like many a Grimm tale, full of characters whose salvation or downfall is rooted in their curiosity.
It also follows in the tradition of Psycho and Lost Highway, switching heroines partway through. When Marlene (Sandra Hüller) is left severely traumatised by her visit to the mysterious Stainbach, her daughter, Mona (Gro Swantje Kohlhof), decides to investigate in turn, staying in the same Sonnenhugel Hotel, where she promptly experiences some...

Worried about her mother’s condition, her 19-year-old daughter Mona (Gro Swantje Kohlhof) heads to the psychiatric ward to find her.
