Yash Raj Films has been serious about creating a Spy universe for a long time since the global advent of superhero films. The first two Tiger films, followed by War and Pathaan, were the inception of the crossover films being attempted on a commercial scale for the first time in the Hindi film industry. All these films are headlined by the superstars of the Hindi films and the production house minted money based on their aura and the audience they could draw in.

Tiger 3
Starring Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif , Emraan Hashmi, Revathi, Riddhi Dogra
Directed by Maneesh Sharma
The good news first. Tiger 3 is infinitely better than all his recent films which reeked of self indulgence. As Avinash Singh Rathore, alias Tiger, Salman is more in-character than you will see him being in any film since Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
Now the bad news: Tiger 3 is not half as engaging as the first two instalments of the Franchise. The tactile tension of the first two parts is conspicuously absent this time, as if the heart has gone missing from the action. The overwrought narrative is carpeted with stylish stunts. But they all seem… stunted! There is a lack of spontaneity and, dare I say, vivacity in Salman’s action moves. In contrast, Shah Rukh was discernibly more agile on his feet while decimating his enemies in Pathaan and Jawaan.

Super 30
Starring Hrithik Roshan,Mrunal Thakur, Pankaj Tripathi. Aditya Shrivastava
Directed by Vikah Bahl
Super 30 is magnificent survivor of a film. It survives Hrithik Roshan’s atrocious ‘Bihari’ accent, probably picked from one of the many Lalu Yadav skits on the internet. It not only survives the verbal abomination, it also stakes it claim among the most inspiring and kindred films on the empowerment of the underprivileged through education.
Mathematician par excellence Anand Kumar couldn’t have hoped for a better showcasing of his remarkable work in the field of education. Of course, the original endeavour to give the dis empowered students a chance to make a place in the sun, has been substantially amplified and dramatized. The climax specially, shot in a hospital premise with the protagonist’s students taking on a gang of professional goons, is a hoot.
But then, this film survives the onslaught of the outrageous,...

Qaidi Band
Starring Aadar Jain, Anya Singh
Written & Directed by Habib Faisal
Just days before I saw the very real and gripping Qaidi Band, a vegetable seller in my locality whom I saw regularly on the street, disappeared. When I asked his wife about him she said he had been taken to jail after getting in a street brawl where he tried to save a friend from a knife attack. Now, sobbed the wife, they can’t afford a lawyer who can bail him out.
Blessedly in Qaidi Band there is a hotshot lawyer played by Ram Kapoor, who agrees to help innocent undertrials free of cost. Such miracles don’t happen in real life. But when they do in this film we sigh in relief.
In Habib Faisal’s fast-flowing anthem to imprisoned angst Sanju (played with bridled vigour by debutant Aadar Jain) tells Bindu (Anya Singh, a prized...

Starring – Tabu, Katrina Kaif, Aditya Roy Kapoor and above all, Kashmir
Directed by Abhishek Kapoor
There is only one hero in Abhishek Kapoor’s massively disappointing and bogus adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations. And it’s not Aditya Roy Kapoor. It’s Kashmir. The film, purported to be a romance between the bewitching Katrina Kaif and the besotted Aditya Roy Kapoor, romances just the Kashmir Valley. The rest is all mystery.
I recommend Fitoor be used to promote tourism in the Valley. As for Charles Dickens and Great Expectations, thankfully the author is not around to see how far his novel about forbidden love has been taken away from its roots.
Dickens’ title, as it turns out, proves prophetically ironic. You enter director Abhishek Kapoor’s snow-swept stunning world of stillness and turbulence, with a whole lot of expectations. You come away feeling cheated, betrayed and also angry for...

Avinash Arun’s “Killa”
Avinash Arun’s debut film Killa, won the Crystal Bear at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival in the Generation KPlus section. Killa is about an 11 year old child who is coping with the death of his father and finds it difficult to adapt to a new place he has migrated to. Director Avinash Arun tells us more about the film.
You’ve been describing Killa as autobiographical. In what sense is it so?
I come from a small town called Solapur in Maharashtra. My father kept getting transferred from one place to another. It was very difficult for me to make friends in one place and suddenly, do it all over again. This went on and on. Later, I realized that it is necessary to explore. So this nostalgia resulted in the genesis of the idea of Killa while I was still at the Ftii.

There are two fantastic recent books, both of which were adapted for the screen. One was “The Silver Linings Playbook”, which is now an Oscar nominated film starring Bradley Cooper and our very own Anupam Kher. The other book was Chetan Bhagat’s “The 3 Mistakes of My Life”. First published in 2008 and easily one of Chetan’s best, many of us never contemplated that it would become a feature length film. For those who may not have read the book, you may be equally anticipating director Abhishek Kapoor’s follow up to Rock On!!, which coincidentally was also released in 2008. So our review will focus on the book’s adaptation and director’s performance in parallel.

Imagine your first feature film, and not only is it with an award winning director, but it is based on a novel by a best selling author. That is what happened to Sushant Singh Rajput and he is very excited. The young actor is starring as one of the leads in Abhishek Kapoor’s Kai Po Che, which based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel The 3 Mistakes of my Life. The film tells the story of best friends Ishaan, Omi and Govind – young, ambitious and restless, who are trying to make a mark in the India of the early 2000’s. In a country where cricket is religion, they hit upon a brilliant plan – to start a training academy that could produce India’s next sporting superstars! What follows is without doubt the greatest adventure of their lives, as they attempt to navigate the big hurdles in the path of fulfilling their dreams.

The Japanese Wife
Aparna Sen has made several memorable films, starting with 36, Chowringhee Lane. Like her mentor Satyajit Ray, she too has this rare ability to take the simplest-looking story and turn it into a cinematic piece de resistance. But in The Japanese Wife, she has done something she has not done ever before. That is, to create an ode to love so poetic that it stays on with you for a long, long time.
The story of The Japanese Wife is quite straightforward at the first glance, and those who have read it, already know its flavour. Author Kunal Basu (who makes a one-scene appearance in the film) conjured up this long-distance love story set at a time when the world used to write letters and trans-continental phone calls were exorbitantly costly. Sen adapts this story to the big screen with a rare, lyrical elegance.
Set in the Sunderbans in West Bengal and Japan,...
