Wild Honey Orchestra: Buffalo Springfield tribute Alex Theatre, Glendale CA February 17, 2018
The Wild Honey Foundation started putting on themed benefit concerts a quarter century ago and was revived a few years back, now benefitting the Autism Think Tank. A collection of superb Los Angeles-based musicians with extensive résumés comes together, led by guitarist Rob Laufer (Johnny Cash, George Martin, Cheap Trick, etc.) as The Wild Honey Orchestra to back special guest stars (many, but not all, also L.A.-based) and augment existing bands, this year performing songs of Buffalo Springfield, the band that shot Stephen Stills, Neil Young, and Richie Furay (Poco, Souther-Hillman-Furay Band) -- along with bassist Bruce Palmer (later Jim Messina) and drummer Dewey Martin -- to fame in the late '60s.
Thanks to my Wild Honey pal Michael Ackerman, I got to attend both the show and two rehearsals, which even after decades of listening...

Los Angeles band Beachwood Sparks has been gearing up for the release of forthcoming album Desert Skies, a full-length compiled of unmastered, unreleased tracks recorded years ago with their original six-member lineup. These recordings were born at The Space Shed, the Sierra Madre studio of band guitarist/vocalist Josh Schwartz, and is a flashback to the band’s beginnings. Watch the video for “Make It Together” in the player below. Desert Skies is set for release on Nov. 26 via Alive Naturalsound Recordings....

The key to any voyage into the twangy depths of this weekend's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival is planning.
San Francisco's annual free celebration of bluegrass (and also not bluegrass) in Golden Gate Park, now in its 12th consecutive year, has gotten so popular that shuttling between stages to see all of your favorite bands can prove virtually impossible. Instead, the best idea is often just to get there early, pick a spot near the stage you're most interested in and stay there for the long haul.
(Scroll Down For Playlist And Lineup)
While the lineup was announced months ago, the actual full schedule, complete with set times, was only released recently. Essential planning's gotta all be done Right This Very Second.
Our top recommendations are Ben Kweller, Buddy Miller, Robert Earl Keen, The Dirty Three, the Heartless Bastards, Son Volt and Les Claypool's Duo De Twang. If you're curious as to why this is exciting,...

Music has the power to do many things: create harmony, inspire others and, recently, save kittens. Burger Records hopes to achieve the latter with its latest release, The Kitty Comp. The California-based record company discovered an abandoned kitten near an overpass and put together a 2-cassette release to cover about $2,200 in medical fees for surgery. The cassette features previously unreleased songs from 50 different artists including Ryan Adams, Mikal Cronin and members of Beachwood Sparks....

The four soft-rocking Californians of Sub Pop’s Beachwood Sparks have been credited with launching, if not quite creating, the early-aughts rise of easy-to-listen-to, easier-to-nap-to, alt-country West Coast crooner rock—the very same variety that artists like Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver proceeded to popularize and then polarize. And since the release of 2002’s Make the Cowboy Roots Cry Ep, they’ve mostly left it alone. But they haven’t left it behind: A decade later, The Tarnished Gold presents a comforting, if occasionally too comfortable, return to form. Ever-present are the looping choruses, lazy melodies and gentle, diluted vocals of Beachwood Sparks’ early...

While our managing editor Steve Holtje has done a bang-up job sharing phenomenal Jazz and Classical reviews, I thought I'd share some of my favorite new rock, pop, and soul picks for Summer 2012. It's time for BBQs and beach blanket bingo parties. Time to get your swag on, peoples.
"Radiator Sister" - The Mynabirds Generals (Saddle Creek) - Infectious, bubble-gum snappin' tunes abound on this sophomore long player from singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn. All aptly produced by Richard Swift, but for my limited ducats this iPod-friendly ditty is the bees-ness. Equal parts Bow Wow Wow and T.Rex, with its two-note piano hook.
"Among the Leaves" Sun Kil Moon Among the Leaves (Caldo Verde) - Mark Kozelek remains steadfast in his musical offerings; familiar turf, but still so damn compelling. Alt tunings, heartfelt ballads, and lyrical dexterity all remain firmly in place. The gentle tug of his band behind him keep...

Much of this past year was spent talking about the visual aspect of movies, what with the whole 3-D revolution (or plague, depending on your perspective) and the increased sophistication of CGI effects. But let’s not forget the other half of the audio/visual equation.
There were plenty of musical moments to celebrate at the theater in 2010, and fans of film soundtracks had plenty to hang their hats on.
Here are our picks for the best of the bunch, and whether your tastes run to hip-hop, rock, or just a big, ol’ “Bonnnnng” sound, there’s something here for your ears.
9. ‘Grown Ups’
There wasn’t much to celebrate about the latest Happy Madison production (unless you were one of the film’s stars and got to hang out with your comedian buddies for a couple months on the company dime), but if there’s one thing every Adam Sandler movie knows,...

A film packed with plenty of solid tunes as well as pop culture references, we celebrate the eclectic soundtrack of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World...
The recipient of two excellent four star reviews on this very site, courtesy of Michael and James, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World is, without doubt, the geekiest film of the year. And while it's not a film without faults, it's as close to a perfect an adaptation of the source as I could have hoped for.
I had a lot of fun with the film and it blended everything I'm geeky about in a 110 minute film. Given the nature of my weekly column, it's no surprise that music, and specifically movie music, is something I'm quite passionate about and, as more news about the soundtrack surfaced, I got more and more excited.
The wait for the UK release of the soundtrack was rather excruciating, but it was worth it.
