“King of the Monsters—Savior of Our City?” This is what a news channel chyron at the end of 2014’s Godzilla asks. The question appears on a television set in a San Francisco stadium that has been converted into a Fema camp for survivors of Godzilla’s attack on the Bay Area, which climaxed with a battle between the Big G and two Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms (MUTOs). The scale of suffering caused by these creatures, and the shrieks of terror the survivors let out when they see Godzilla rise after defeating the MUTOs and walk to the sea, tell us that the answer is “no.”
To anyone wondering who, then, is the savior of the city, the same scene provides an answer. In a sequence that mirrors countless feel-good videos shared on social media, we follow protagonist Lt. Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) in his tattered fatigues as he carries...

Legendary’s MonsterVerse is something of a miracle in the realm of modern franchises. America had its shot at adapting Toho’s Godzilla in 1998 only to find almost universal hatred from the fanbase, poor critical reception, and a weaker box office than expected. Toho themselves even voiced their displeasure with the final product.
The notion of a mega budget, interconnected “shared universe” franchise starring Godzilla and pals was nothing more than a flight of fanboy fancy. But in 2014 Warner Bros. and Legendary took the first rumbling step into the playing field with 2014’s Godzilla.
Since that film’s positive critical reception and strong box office numbers, Godzilla found himself back in the pop cultural zeitgeist for life-long fans as well as newcomers to enjoy.

Ever since he first rose out of the ocean on movie screens sixty years ago, Godzilla has achieved a level of pop culture ubiquity shared by few other fictional characters. Much like Count Dracula, the Frankenstein monster, Sherlock Holmes, and King Kong, you can say Godzilla’s name to virtually anyone in the world and they will know who you’re talking about, even if they’ve never seen a single Godzilla movie. But the franchise has been dormant since the 50th anniversary film Godzilla: Final Wars (2004). Now we have a new take on the King of Monsters – brought to us by Warner Bros., Legendary Pictures, and British filmmaker Gareth Edwards, who directed the acclaimed sci-fi indie Monsters (2010) – and it’s awesome. Godzilla is a true epic, a welcome return to movies for the character, and a perfect way to celebrate the big guy’s diamond jubilee.

Chicago – Except for the clear purpose of cashing in on yet another “Godzilla” remake, everything is happening for no reason. Worst of all, what is ensuing misses and even mocks the reason why Ishirô Honda originated 1954’s “Godzilla” in the first place.
Since then, times have dramatically changed and blockbuster Hollywood movies have a new boss to answer to: the box office. Still, we can’t forgive a film that focuses on CGI and big-city destruction while assuming we don’t care about a story and the honesty of where that plot needs to have its roots. The original “Godzilla” is an understandable outpouring from Japan when it was suffering in real life. America isn’t traumatized here.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
It’s insulting to audiences to think the eye candy fed to the two holes above our nose is more important than the brain that sits atop our head. Our minds have to be equally satisfied.

Considering his first cinematic excursion with oversized creatures quickly became one of my favorite genre films of the last ten years, I knew if anyone was going to be up to the gargantuan task of breathing new life into the “King of the Monsters,” British filmmaker & Monsters helmer Gareth Edwards absolutely would be the right guy for the job.
The reality is that for a film like Godzilla, what we’re really showing up for are these giant cinematic beasts- not the humans- and that’s truly the one aspect of the movie Edwards nails to absolute perfection, making it easy dismiss all those minor flaws and get caught up in all the awesomeness of the monsters and their paths of destruction throughout the film. This Godzilla is The perfect celebration of everyone’s favorite giant radioactive beastie and should undoubtedly deliver pretty much what any long-time fan could want...

If you’re among those eagerly awaiting the return of Godzilla to our screens via the filmmaking hand of Gareth Edwards, chances are you’ve already seen the trailer. But now Warners has put an extended version online for your viewing use. This expanded version of the promo, which had audiences applauding at CinemaCon a couple of weeks ago, ramps up the emotional beats while also allowing for a few more shots of the big guy doing his destructive thing.Once again we kick off in flashback, with physicist Joe Brody (Bryan Cranston) facing a horrific situation that impacts his family. The authorities attempt to spin it as a natural disaster, but Brody suspects the truth and is trying to warn the world before we all get sent – in his words – back to the stone age. Of course, few people listen and then the roaring, the stomping, the screaming and the running start.

It’s only been a couple of weeks since the most recent Godzilla trailer, which we had director Gareth Edwards break down for us, video-style. You can’t keep the big G down, so here comes the latest promo, with one or two new clips sprinkled among some returning favourites. There is, of course, Bryan Cranston’s physicist Joe Brody battling the authorities to find the truth about the big beast his son Ford (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), Ford's wife (Elizabeth Olsen) and son (Carson Bolde) and scientist Ken Watanabe. Plus plenty of other people and places that are none too happy about being visited by Godzilla. After all, he’s not the most conscientious tourist, is he?Edwards has also been speaking to Popular Mechanics about the movie, which includes lots of inspiration from a certain Manga-turned anime. “I think one of the most visually breathtaking films ever made is Akira.

There's a better look here than previously at characters including Cranston's physicist Joe Brody; his son Ford (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), Ford's wife (Elizabeth Olsen) and son (Carson Bolde); and scientist Ken Watanabe. You'll also get a brief glimpse of Juliette Binoche as Cranston's wife, and while we don't see her face, we're pretty sure there's some voiceover from Sally Hawkins' scientist. This trailer also reveals a little more about the locations we expect to be monster-plagued in Gareth Edwards' film, including Hawaii (specifically...
