Monkey Man is one of the most imaginative action films to come out sometimes and it comes from a first-time director who also stars in the lead role Dev Patel. Described as “Indian John Wick,” the action-thriller film follows the story of a young underground fighter who goes on a rampage against the city’s elite to avenge the injustices done by them to his mother and village. Monkey Man also stars Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, Adithi Kalkunte, Makarand Deshpande, Sharlto Copley, Brahim Achabbakhe, Ashwini Kalshekar, Pitobash Tripathy, and Vipin Sharma. So, if you loved the action and heartfelt story told in Monkey Man by the first passionate first-time director Dev Patel, here are some similar movies you should check out next.

For the last few months, trades, outlets, brands across the world have all wanted their slice of discourse in the marketing and publicity heaven that is Greta Gerwig's “Barbie” (2023). For a website dedicated to Asian cinema, it might be argued that this smidge of pie was not ours to claim. Yet as I sat through its credits, celebrating our collective womanhood, a film by Lee Sang-Woo came to mind. 11 years ago, in another “Barbie” (2012), then-child actress Kim Sae-Ron quipped, “A pretty and skinny person like (Barbie) doesn't exist. If she does, then she must be an alien.”

Alien, meaning someone not of this planet, or perhaps, someone not of this country. Lee Sang-Woo's “Barbie” once illuminated an uncomfortable truth: the Eurocentrism of Barbie, and at larger value, the Eurocentrism of many American owned megacorporations that purport themselves to be global,...

Netflix’s Bloodhounds is an excellent example of a show that is fun, simple, and still engaging. The straightforward story is elevated by the presence of two popular actors who have excellent chemistry throughout the series. The bromance is palpable and makes for a refreshing and fun watch amongst the dark subject matter of such shows we’ve been watching recently. So, it is obvious that after finishing the first season, there’s a demand for more of the show, even if it’s just to see this budding bromance and have a hearty laugh. Of course, the streaming giant has made no official announcement of another season, and the webtoon was completed back in 2020, but the popularity of the show might as well lead to exciting outcomes. There are no cliffhangers at the end of the first season, and the show ends on a happy note, but there is always scope for more,...

Bloodhoundsis a South Korean series directed by Kim Joo-hwan, starring Woo Do-hwan and Lee Sang-yi.
A South Korean series about the underworld that, this time, is more action than thriller. Good photography in a series that mixes boxing with an entertaining crime thriller and better production than script.
Bloodhounds
Entertaining and with that experience in the industry that South Korean productions are achieving: By now they definitely know how to produce good series that can hit the right spots.
Bloodhounds is, above all, a good product to entertain ourselves.
Without going down in history at all.
But it contributes enormously to an already consolidated industry, following the right path of profitability.
About the series
Good at all levels, but outstanding in none of them. It plays safe with the script and doesn’t transcend the genre. The series knows where to go and what its strengths are. It knows what it is,...

The Cat (aka- Cat: Two Eyes That See Death)
Go-hyang-i: Jook-eum-eul Bo-neun Doo Gae-eui Noon (original title)

Director:Seung-wook Byeon
Writer:Seung-wook Byeon
At first look…
Tricky to get a feel for a film with such a simple title, but with the alternate title of “Two Eyes That See Death,” I can picture a docile feline who voyeurs a family bloodbath… and then takes a break to lick its paws. I might not have been too far off the mark with this one…
For some reason, fat ladies with cats do not live long in these movies and sure enough, a chubby lady with a cat named Silky (gag me) is found dead at her apartment to kick things off. The ill-named feline moves to the...

Doona Bae with Sae-ron Kim in A Girl At My Door
She’s one of Korea’s most successful international stars, best known in the West for Cloud Atlas and for her role in the Wachowskis’ TV series, Sense8. This week, British cinemagoers can see her in Korean drama A Girl At My Door, for which she was named Best Actress at the Asia Film Awards. It’s the story of a police chief sent to work in a small village who finds herself facing a difficult situation when the daughter of the local bigwig turns to her for help – and who encounters various forms of prejudice along the way.
Bae herself couldn’t be more different from the lonely, taciturn Chief. She has the help of a translator to ensure the interview goes smoothly, but manages impressively by herself, hesitating as often to laugh as to search for a word.

★★★★☆ July Jung's A Girl at My Door (2014) offers a South Korean domestic abuse psychodrama marked by its slow pace, minimalist framing and unsettling sexual overtones. The link between bigotry and victimhood is quickly established on Young-Nam's (Doona Bae) first day as the police chief of an isolated seaside village: her all-male colleagues casually refer to her as "sexy girl" and she encounters a raggedy girl named Do-Hee (Sae-ron Kim), mud-splattered by passing vehicles as she plays alone on the side of the road. Young-Nam is repeatedly forced to intervene when Do-Hee's irascible drunk of a stepfather Yong-Ha (Sae-byok Sung) and sadistic grandmother beat her and call her a "bitch".

Netflix has revolutionized the home movie experience for fans of film with its instant streaming technology. Netflix Nuggets is my way of spreading the word about independent, classic and foreign films being made available by Netflix for instant streaming. Important Note: There may be some films that do not become available on the specified dates. This is merely a report of the most accurate release dates I can find, but is not directly confirmed by Netflix themselves.

Tae-shik (Bin Won) lives a pretty lonely life eeking out a humble existence as a pawnshop owner, his only friend a young girl named So-mi (Sae-ron Kim), who visits him from time to time.
Whilst Tae-shik’s ‘emo’ haircut is far too heavy handed a signifier of his angst and downbeat nature there are a number of scenes in the early stages of The Man From Nowhere in which there is a palpable sense of ennui that Bin Won manages to convey effortlessly through his physical performance. The difficulty he has in connecting with other people also comes across well in his interactions with the young girl who, clearly desperate for a father figure, reaches out to this lonely guy.
When So-mi is kidnapped though Tae-shik is forced to break out of his hermetic life, pursuing the men who have taken her with unrelenting fervour. He does this through a...

We’ve got an exclusive look at the trailer for the forthcoming South Korean thriller, The Man From Nowhere, before it rolls out to other sites next week. If you’re up to date with your cult and world cinema knowledge you’ll know that South Korean films and talent are in shockingly rude health.
The Man From Nowhere has been called “Taken meets Oldboy” – which is intriguing, to say the least. Directed by Jeong-beom Lee (Cruel Winter Blues) it stars Bin Won, who last put in a storming performance in Bong Joon-Ho’s superb Mother (read our review here).
Synopsis:
Scarred by traumatic events resulting from his past, former special agent Tae-shik (Bin Won) lives in solitude running a pawnshop in a rundown neighbourhood. His only contact with the world is through his customers and his next-door neighbours, a young girl named So-mi (Sae-ron Kim) and her mother, an...

Red Riding Hood – Amanda Seyfried, Lukas Haas, Gary Oldman

The Plot: Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl (Seyfried) falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family’s displeasure.
The Buzz: Amanda Seyfried has grown on me, more and more as she’s aged. I loved her in Chloe. She’s stunning in Red Riding Hood‘s trailer, heck, everything looks fantastic here. From what I’ve seen so far, I’m entirely sold on the art direction, the cinematography, the high saturation color-push, the entire visual approach. When I first heard this...

One of South Korea’s highest grossing actions flicks of 2010 is coming to U.S Blu-ray and DVD, when The Man from Nowhere debuts on March 8 from Well Go USA. Written and directed by Lee Jeong-Beom (Cruel Winter Blues), ‘The Man’ stars Bin Won and newcomer Sae-Ron Kim in the story of a desperate man out to save a young girl from drug runners. The film comes both subtitled and with a (totally pointless, in our view) English language dub?? Bonus features include the in-depth, behind-the-scenes featurette “The Making of The Man From Nowhere,” as well as a reel of action highlights from the film. Synopsis: An ex-special agent Tae-sik Cha's only connection to the rest of the world is a little girl, So-mi, who lives nearby. Her mother, Hyo-jeong smuggles drugs from a drug trafficking organization and entrusts Tae-sik with the product, without letting him know. The traffickers find...
