‘Footprints on Water’ Review: A Heartfelt Tale With A Strong Anchoring Performance From Adil Hussain
Footprints on Water, Nathalia Syam’s debut feature film, centers around an immigrant Raghu who struggles to make ends meet in Birmingham, London. The story dives into the complexity and rigor that the protagonist had to undergo to fulfill his dreams and aspirations in a nation that is away from his motherland. The story also sheds light on the societal barriers and prejudices that immigrants often encounter, highlighting the importance of empathy and understanding in fostering a more inclusive society. The filmmaker skillfully explores the universal themes of identity, belonging, and the pursuit of happiness. It serves as a poignant reminder that compassion and acceptance are crucial in building a harmonious multicultural society.
Raghu (Adil Hussain) is an immigrant in Birmingham, UK, lacking legal documents. Raghu was a successful businessman in Kerala, India, but due to betrayal from his clients, he fell into the gallows of debt with life-threatening consequences.

Filmmaker Raghuvir Joshi’s movie ‘Sahela’, an Australian production in English, set to make its South Asian premiere at the Jio Mami Mumbai International Film Festival 2023 is inspired by his own lived experience of having discovered his sexuality post-marriage.
“It was a big milestone In my life and I had to express it through the medium of film. I directed a short film called Yaman a few years ago which then became the proof of concept for the feature film, ‘Sahela’,” he tells Ians.
He however adds that it would be unfair to call the feature film an ‘extension’ of ‘Yaman’ as the story and characters, and the milieu itself is very different. “But yes, the emotional core is the same, of love and loss.”

Dir: Babak Anvari. Starring: George MacKay, Hugh Bonneville, Kelly Macdonald, Varada Sethu, Antonio Aakeel, Percelle Ascott. 15, 110 minutes.
Exactly how much fun are we meant to be having with I Came By, Netflix’s latest glossy thriller? It features Paddington’s own Hugh Bonneville in the role of a duplicitous wretch, seen flushing ashes down his toilet with the creviced expression of a man who’s just been served subpar wine. A handful of scenes earlier, we catch him howling at the television, watching – of all things – an episode of the animated meta-comedy Rick and Morty.
His character, Hector Blake, popularly known as “St Blake”, is a former high court judge known for regularly accepting inquests on behalf of refugees. Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of the Slow Horses season finale.
Exclusive: “You know, to be able to sort of wrap it all up playing Jackson Lamb, I would consider myself very honored and very lucky to be able to do that,” says Gary Oldman of his disheveled Slow Horses role and the potential end of his long and acclaimed acting career. “I would never say never,” the Oscar winner added of making AppleTV+’s adaption of Mick Herron’s MI5 novels his swan song.
Having already filmed a second Dead Lions season, based on Herron’s 2013 book, the six-episode Will Smith (not that one) adapted Slow Horses came to a somewhat triumphant end today with the James Hawes helmed “Follies.” Kristin Scott Thomas’s MI5 Deputy Director Diana Taverner escaped the mess and horrors of her false flag operation kidnapping the British nephew of a top Pakistan intelligence...

Everything is coming down to the wire in the nail-biting finale of Apple TV+’s British spy thriller “Slow Horses,” as the Slough House crew try to find kidnap victim Hassan Ahmed (Antonio Aakeel) before his abductors can kill him, and save themselves from taking the fall for a false flag mission gone terribly wrong.
Director James Hawes, who helmed all six episodes of the series, talked to TheWrap about the satisfaction that Saskia Reeves’ character, Catherine Standish, the veteran agent of the group, finds in Friday’s finale when her old-school skills get results quicker than even those of tech whiz Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung).
Hawes told TheWrap how much he and Reeves enjoyed Catherine’s evolving arc over six episodes, from a grief-stricken recovering alcoholic to the spy she used to be, who can keep a cool head in a crisis, calmly point a gun at a fellow agent,...

As anyone who’s even fleetingly dipped into the vast, storied genre of the British spy thriller can attest, there are a few different games afoot in “Slow Horses.” What looks at first like a story of restless, demoted spies finding their purpose gets quickly twisted up in MI5 politics. Then, a couple of hours into the six-episode season, the show tries to turn everything we thought we knew inside out. With its starry cast, handsome budget, and slick cinematography, the new Apple TV Plus drama (based on a Mick Herron novel and executive produced by Graham Yost) works hard to differentiate itself from every other MI5 narrative we’ve seen before. By season’s end, “Slow Horses” feels more familiar than truly innovative, albeit with some sharper acting and jokes than most others it’s following.

"Whatever's going on will be handled by the real agents." Ha. Apple TV+ has revealed an official trailer for their new original series Slow Horses, adapted from Mick Herron's bestselling book of the same name. This darkly funny espionage drama follows a team of British intelligence agents who serve in a dumping ground department of MI5, known as the Slough House, due to their career-ending mistakes. Led by their brilliant but irascible leader, the notorious Jackson Lamb, they navigate the espionage world's smoke and mirrors to defend England from sinister forces. There has to be more to it than just that! I thought it be much funnier, but instead this reminds me of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The series ensemble cast includes Chris Reilly, Gary Oldman, Rosalind Eleazar, Olivia Cooke, Kristin Scott Thomas, Jonathan Pryce, Stephen Walters, Freddie Fox, Jack Lowden, Sam Hazeldine, Dustin Demri-Burns, Antonio Aakeel, and Christopher Chung.

So why not combine the two this weekend, and be transported to the beautiful streets of Granada, while sat in the comfort of your local cinema (sounds perfect), by seeing Abid Khan’s affable and charming coming-of-age drama Granada Nights.
To mark the occasion we had the pleasure of speaking not only to Khan, but to his leading man, Antonio Aakeel, as we speak about their experience shooting this film on location. Aakeel speaks about his character, and his attraction to this project, while Abid comments on the film’s unique aspect ratio – while also talking about diversity, and how a film that doesn’t politicise nor make a deal out of the protagonist’s ethnic background, is showing great signs of progression.

A promising premise, involving an anxious British Asian guy finding peace in the Spanish city, is let down by cliched dialogue
The premise of Granada Nights, the directorial debut from Abid Khan, seems promising enough, in that it reimagines the tired subgenre of a sad white guy going to a foreign country and learning how to live, love and laugh. Unfortunately, while refreshingly centring a British Asian protagonist, Khan’s film is hopelessly bogged down by a thin plot and cliched dialogues.
Square, Instagram-like framing opens this journey of self-discovery, capturing reserved 24-year-old Ben (Antonio Aakeel) en route from London to Granada, Spain, to surprise his long-distance girlfriend, Helen. The tight composition oozes anxiety, and Ben’s apprehensions are sadly proved right: Helen doesn’t even want to see his face. Heartbroken and sneering at hostels, Ben is persuaded by spunky backpacker Amelia (Quintessa Swindell) to stay and explore the city.

Point Blank
Stars: Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Marcia Gay Harden, Stuart F. Wilson, Buster Reeves, Christian Cooke, Teyonah Parris, Boris McGiver, Reggie Willis, Shanessa Sweeney, Nik Pajic, Markice Moore | Written by Adam G. Simon | Directed by Joe Lynch
Point Blank, directed by Joe Lynch, is a remake of Fred Cavayé’s À bout portant, which was originally released in 2010. The film stars two actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Frank Grillo and Anthony Mackie as Abe and Paul, respectively. Paul has to break Abe out of custody in a hospital as his brother has taken Paul’s pregnant wife hostage. What commences is an unorthodox buddy-action comedy, in what is sadly yet another dull and tedious action-adventure.
It is hard to watch Point Blank and not debate why this was made, or even distributed by Netflix. Everything from its plot, actors and actress, or even filmmaking evokes a sense of direct-to-dvd nature.

Everyone loves a good belly laugh. And that’s exactly what’ll you’ll get from Eaten by Lions. With Harry Potter references, a zany fortune-teller, the biggest man-child father that’s ever been written and a 1970’s dress-sense, it’s far wackier than expected.
The story follows orphaned half-brothers, Omar and Pete. When their grandmother dies, the brothers end up in the care of a racist aunt and uncle, who do everything they can to make disabled Pete feel at home, while simultaneously making it clear that mixed race Omar is not of their own. With it clear that they don’t want him there, Omar determines to find his biological father. And when Pete insists on going with him, they head off to Blackpool in search of the father Omar’s never met.

A teenager and his half-brother head for the bright lights of Blackpool on an emotional quest to find his biological father
In all its good-natured silliness and gag-filled sprightliness, Eaten By Lions from director Jason Wingard is this week’s unexpected treat: a really happy multicultural comedy that, for me, revived the spirit of Ayub Khan-Din’s East Is East from 1999.
It’s the story of Omar (Antonio Aakeel) a teenage boy of south Asian background who has been living with his gran and his half-brother Pete (Jack Carroll) ever since their mum and dad – technically Pete’s dad – died in a bizarre accident: the couple’s hot-air balloon crashed in a safari park, causing them to suffer the terrible fate of the title.

Comedy “Eaten by Lions” has triumphed at the Bagri London Indian Film Festival. The BFI-backed event also handed an Icon Award to Irrfan Khan, star of movies such as “Slumdog Millionaire.”
Jason Wingard’s “Eaten by Lions” scooped the Audience Award for Best Film. It follows half-brothers Omar (Antonio Aakeel) and Pete (Jack Carroll) as they travel to the British seaside resort of Blackpool looking for Omar’s biological father.
It is Wingard’s second movie after the Raindance and Bifa award-winning “In Another Life.” He said: “’Eaten by Lions’ is a modern relevant comedy dealing with contemporary issues such as diversity and disability, but ultimately captures that life is about relationships and people, and we’re so pleased audiences are connecting with it.”

After the death of their beloved Gran (Stephanie Fayerman), two half-brothers, Omar (Antonio Aakeel) and Pete (Jack Carroll) set off for Blackpool in order to find Omar’s long-missing father. Omar was, as Gran points out, the result of a “youthful dalliance” between his mother and a desi man she met on a night out, and whom she never saw again. And although Gran previously said she knew little more than that, she leaves Omar a letter that tells him more of what she really knew about his father. Armed with his birth certificate, his mother’s diary, and a photograph taken on the fateful evening, and with his grandmother’s urn and his disabled brother in tow, Omar decides it’s time to finally find out who his father really is.

People trying to find their real parents is a theme that has been done a fair bit in cinema for a long time now. The latest voice to tell the story is that of Jason Wingard’s, who attempts to put a fresh spin to the tale and, for the most part, succeeds.

City of Tiny Lights is a noir inspired London thriller directed by Pete Travis, based on the novel by Patrick Neate which stars Riz Ahmed (currently to be seen on Netflix starring in the much-acclaimed The Night of), Cush Jumbo, and Billie Piper.
As the film moves through present day multicultural London, it also cuts back to Tommy's youth in 1997, telling the story of his friendship with a lad called Lovely (Antonio Aakeel), his mate Stuart (George Sargeant) and his growing love for Stuart's girlfriend, Shelley (Hannah Rae).
The filmmakers spent almost five months searching for the youngsters, cast by Celestia Fox. Beyond conventional casting methods they trawled youth clubs, theatre's and schools in search for the perfect young ensemble.
Playing the younger Riz Ahmed is newcomer Reiss Kershi-Hussain (represented by Shepherd Management) who had no previous acting experience before being cast as the impressionable young Tommy.
