Today, BET+ and BET Studios announced the season two greenlight of Diarra From Detroit, the critically acclaimed dramedy from creator, executive producer, writer, and star Diarra Kilpatrick.

Bryan Terrell Clark, DomiNque Perry, and Jon Chaffin are confirmed to return as series regulars in the upcoming season, continuing their dynamic roles alongside Kilpatrick.

Diarra From Detroit quickly captivated audiences and critics alike with its genre-blending storytelling, razor-sharp wit, and standout performances.

BET+’s critically acclaimed series “Diarra From Detroit,” produced by BET Studios, is returning for a Season 2. The dramatic comedy will return with creator, executive producer, writer and star Diarra Kilpatrick, as well. as series regulars Bryan Terrell Clark, DomiNque Perry and Jon Chaffin.

The renewal comes after the show’s linear run on BET in early 2025, in which it became the No. 1 new series on cable among Black viewers year-to-date according to the company. The show led demos including Black adults 18-49, 25-54 and total Black viewers 2+. It’s now the second overall scripted series this year with Black audiences 18-49 & 25-54, behind BET’s “Tyler Perry’s Sistas.”

“Following a breakout first season that quickly became a favorite among both fans and critics, BET Studios is excited to bring ‘Diarra From Detroit’ back to BET+ for Season 2,” said Aisha Summers Burke, BET Studios’ exec VP and Gm, said in a statement.

The TriStar Pictures movie — produced by Issa Rae’s Hoorae, written by Syreeta Singleton and directed by Lawrence Lamont — will get a theatrical release on Jan. 24, 2025.

The title for the R-rated comedy and other plot details are still being kept under wraps, but the supporting cast includes Lil Rel Howery, Janelle James, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Maude Apatow, Katt Williams, Joshua Neal, Aziza Scott, Patrick Cage and Amin Joseph. “I come as one, I stand as 10,000,” Diarra Kilpatrick said through tears at the premiere of Diarra From Detroit in Los Angeles on Wednesday night as she thanked the cast, crew and executives at BET for their work in bringing her new series to life.

Premiering on BET+ on Thursday, the mystery comedy-drama created and executive produced by Kilpatrick is an emotional milestone for the writer and actress who grew up performing in theater in Detroit before moving to Los Angeles to further pursue her passion. “I think about the fact that in 2012 I used my tax return to make a web series,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s been a long journey, and I’m really grateful to all the people who have become a part of it, and I’m grateful to myself for being able to get to my dream.”

It would be a stretch to describe BET+’s Diarra From Detroit, about a schoolteacher getting sucked into the criminal underground via a decades-old missing persons case, as “relatable.” But the sly punchline is that it starts in a familiar place. You see, Diarra (Diarra Kilpatrick) only gets caught up in the mess because she’s looking for Chris (Shannon Wallace), the Tinder date who ghosted her after a single magical evening. Who could blame her for wondering why, and for seeking out literally any explanation besides coldhearted rejection?

In this case, Diarra’s seemingly unhinged conspiracy theory turns out to be true, thus pulling her down a path that’s part noir-infused mystery and part midlife-crisis comedy. If the marriage between the two isn’t always as smooth as it could be, Diarra From Detroit still shines as a fun and funny showcase for Kilpatrick, its creator as well as its star.

The 55th Annual NAACP Image Awards were held on Saturday, March 16 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The event was hosted by Queen Latifah and honored the accomplishments of Black creatives in film, television and music. The four-part series features interviews and discussions with notable Black actors, celebrities and leaders, who will dive into their own family connections to slavery and unpack the legacy it has left today. Some of the people interviewed for the series include Debbie Allen, Valerie Jarrett, Lorraine Toussaint, Soledad O’Brien, Cch Pounder, Senator Cory Booker, Marc Morial and Dulé Hill.

The series is executive produced by Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance’s Bassett Vance Productions, with Vance narrating every episode. This year’s American Black Film Festival lineup is stacked with some of the top names in Hollywood as well as emerging voices including a screening of Reginald Hudlin’s The Black Godfather, a conversation with Spike Lee and his protege Stefon Bristol as well as the five finalists for HBO Short Film Competition, which is now in its 22nd year. The fest takes place June 12-16 in Miami.

The program will also include the previously announced opening night film Shaft. New Line Cinema’s reboot of the iconic character will screen at the fest ahead of its June 14 release. In addition, Netflix will screen the Chris Robinson-directed Beats, a coming-of-age drama set in Chicago’s South Side hip-hop scene starring Anthony Anderson.

Prentice Penny wears many hats -- showrunner, executive producer and writer -- on the HBO series Insecure, about two black women navigating work and relationships in South Los Angeles. And with Sunday’s episode -- season two’s “Hella La”, which he calls a bridge between the first and second half of the season -- he’s added director to that collection.

Episode three of Insecure's second season finds Issa (Issa Rae) on the hunt for a guy to hop into bed with, while her bestie Molly (Yvonne Orji) lands a new man.

Now that Lawrence (Jay Ellis) is officially "done" with their relationship, Issa enlists Molly for a crash corse in sleeping around.

Following an awkward "I slept with my ex" confession that ends with Tasha asking him to leave her apartment, he eventually works his way back into her good graces.

In the season two premiere of Insecure, Issa Dee (Issa Rae) wades in emotional limbo following a painful breakup (that she caused) from her boyfriend, Lawrence, played by Jay Ellis.

I have expressed my less than favorable view of Kevin Hart both in articles and the podcast. His screaming in place of jokes schtick is grating, and I honestly do not understand the appeal. However, in Get Hard, he is paired up with Will Ferrell and ostensibly takes up the straight man role to Ferrell's more wacky counterpart. The results are surprisingly effective, as the two strike up a great chemistry with one another and create a lot of laughs. The film has a horrible homophobic touch to it, along with almost every woman character (and by almost, I mean two of the three in the movie) are treated as merely sex objects, but the stuff around that, like showcasing the worst tendencies of racial stereotyping, had me laughing rather consistently.
