Australian action thriller “2099: The Soldier Protocol,” starring David Arquette, has been picked up for international sales by Los Angeles-based Spotlight Pictures. Directed by transgender woman Dee McLachlan (“The Jammed”) it will be launched for buyers at the European Film Market.
Boosting the film’s sales potential is an agreement with Vertical Entertainment to release it in North American theaters on March 27.
The film, released in Australia as “The Wheel,” is the story of a neuroscientist who is forced to take part in a project to build an enhanced human fighting machine. McLachlan, who was born in South Africa and transitioned gender after moving to Australia, weaves in themes of greed, loss and humanity, and questions our compliance in such atrocity, all in the name of science.
The cast also includes Jackson Gallagher and Kendal Rae. Production is by Melbourne-based shingle SunJive Studios.

Alison Whyte in ‘The Kettering Incident’ (Photo: Ben King).
Celebrating 30 years in the acting profession, Alison Whyte is happy to offer advice to young or other aspiring actors.
Perhaps best known for her roles in Network 10’s Playing for Keeps, Foxtel’s The Kettering Incident and Satisfaction and Jocelyn Moorhouse’s The Dressmaker, the Vca graduate proffers these tips:
– Learn to live with rejection and remain optimistic: “It’s easy to get pessimistic if you are unemployed. Isolate one problem and know that it won’t affect the rest of your life.”
– Look after yourself mentally when you are playing roles that require grieving or other deep emotions.
– Don’t think about working overseas until you have a solid list of credits under your belt.
On the subject of mental health, in June Whyte finished performing in the Malthouse Theatre production of Nick Enright and Justin Monjo’s five-hour adaptation of Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet.

Robert Slaviero has joined Umbrella Entertainment as head of sales as the distributor continues its commitment to release a sizable slate of Australian feature films and documentaries.
While some distributors have largely shied away from handling local films Umbrella is keeping the faith with three titles scheduled to open in October and eight on the slate for 2019.
“We like working with people who are passionate about their work and who have a commercial sensibility,” Umbrella MD Jeff Harrison tells If, pointing to collaborators including Causeway Films’ Kristina Ceyton and Sam Jennings, Catherine Scott, Carver Films’ Sarah Shaw and Anna McLeish, Paul Ireland and Damian Hill, Steve Jaggi and Justin Dix. “We are very happy with what we’re doing.”

Mark Hartley's reimagining of cult '70s shocker Patrick hits UK DVD shelves today, 11 August, titled Evil Awakens. With this in mind, we recently cornered Hartley as he took a break in London to pick his brain about the film, his feature helming debut.
Until now, Mark has been most widely known for his directorial work on music videos and documentaries such as Not Quite Hollywood and Machete Maidens Unleashed. When quizzed about the circumstances that led to finally getting in the director's chair for a narrative feature film, he tells us, "Well, I had never ever planned, or had any ambition, to make documentaries."
He elaborates, "That kind of happened by accident... I had always intended to make narrative features, and it was just a very difficult process. My background is actually music videos – I’ve made like a hundred and fifty music videos in Australia prior to...

Peta Sergeant joins "The Originals" tomorrow night, but maybe you already caught her over the weekend in her saucy nurse’s uniform in the remake of 1978’s Aussie cult classic Patrick.
It’s just now available on VOD (unleashed on Friday the 14th), and I do highly recommend it. I never did see the original – but I love the whole idea of a supposedly comatose patient (the titular Patrick, played by Jackson Gallagher) who’s actually sentient… and maybe even evil.
Deftly directed by Mark Hartley (who previously did the well-received doc on Australian horror films Not Quite Hollywood), Patrick (review here) has a great old-school dread to it I just know everyone will want to see (and here's hoping everyone will want to read this interview with the delightful Ms. Sergeant as well)!
For you "Originals" fans, on Page 2 Peta gives her take on new character Francesca, a beautiful...

Rechristened Patrick: Evil Awakens, Mark Hartley.s re-imagining of Richard Franklin.s 1978 cult horror film Patrick opens in the Us today.
Many Us critics had already seen and reviewed the film, which is being released simultaneously on Video-on-Demand and in cinemas in Los Angeles, New York and Columbus, Ohio, by Phase 4 Films.
The latest batch of Us reviews is a mixed bag, ranging from the mostly effusive to a couple that were dismissive. On the positive side, Blu-ray.com.s Brian Orndorf declared, .Armed with a brand name and movie geek recognition, the producers have elected to mount Patrick once again, using contemporary fright film mechanics to sell a familiar tale. Against all odds, they.ve managed to succeed where many efforts fail, returning the tension and peculiarity of the premise for another go-around of telekinetic terror..
