‘Freedom’ Review: Lucas Bravo’s Charming Performance Leads Mélanie Laurent’s Well-Shot But Surface-Level Exploits of Bruno Sulak.
Image
Mélanie Laurent’s follow-up to last year’s Wingwomen sees the actress-turned-filmmaker going for the Bonnie and Clyde-style caper in Freedom, a true-crime drama inspired by Bruno Sulak. Dubbed “the gentleman robber”, he earned that nickname since he doesn’t resort to violence and killing his victims upon committing a robbery. Played by the charming Lucas Bravo, best known for his role as Gabriel in TV’s Emily in Paris, his character is first seen robbing a grocery store with the help of his friend and accomplice Drago (Steve Tientchier). His girlfriend Annie (Léa Luce Busato) is responsible for driving as she sits and waits in the getaway car.

Here, Laurent opens her movie with a sensual close-up shot of Annie as the camera rotates while focusing on her pouty red lips and beautiful face, showcasing the director’s firm grasp on magnetic visuals. There’s a buoyant energy during the opening robbery scene,...

‘Serpent’s Path’ Review: Kiyoshi Kurosawa Turns to His Own Back Catalogue, With Coldly Compelling Results
Image
“The first version is the work of a talented amateur,” said Alfred Hitchcock to François Truffaut of his 1934 thriller “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” remade by Hitch himself in 1956. “The second was made by a professional.” Few are the filmmakers who gather sufficient career mileage and goodwill to take a second pass at their own work; fewer are those who make something worthwhile in the process. But Kiyoshi Kurosawa, not unlike Hitchcock, is the kind of tireless genre craftsman who seems to approach every feature as a test of his own proficiency: “Serpent’s Path,” a brisk, harsh and, yes, clinically professional update of his own 1998 thriller of the same title, passes said test without a moment’s strain.

There’s no urgent reason to remake “Serpent’s Path” except, one presumes, the primarily self-serving pleasures of doing so. The original, a cold-blooded little revenge tale that twists itself into ever more perverse psychological contortions,...

Image
Lucas Bravo is bringing one of France’s most iconic criminals to life in Mélanie Laurent’s “Freedom.”

The Amazon Prime Video feature is inspired by true story of Bruno Sulak, who infamously masterminded jewelry-store heists — sans guns — in the 1970s and early 1980s. Bravo portrays Sulak in the biopic.

Here’s more, straight from the film’s official synopsis: “Known for his charm and finesse, Sulak masterminded daring heists without firing a single shot. But as his infamy grew, so did the relentless pursuit of George Moréas (Yvan Attal), a tenacious police commissioner with a knack for outsmarting criminals. As Moréas closes in, Sulak’s escapes from prison become legendary, fueled by a lust for freedom, and a burning desire for his lover Annie (Léa Luce Busato). Amidst the chaos of their criminal spree, Sulak and Annie become the ultimate symbols of defiance in the most exhilarating game of...

Tony Gatlif’s Tom Medina enters into post-production - Production / Funding - France
Image
David Murgia, Slimane Dazi, Karoline Rose and Suzanne Aubert all shine bright in the cast of the filmmaker’s 19th feature, a Prince Films production sold by Les Films de Losange. Halted by the health crisis after several weeks of filming across February and March, Tony Gatlif revived his Tom Medina film-set at break-neck speed once lockdown had ended. He’d wrapped shooting by the end of May, becoming the first director in France (by far) to resurrect a suspended production, a fact which won’t come as a great surprise to many, given his cast-iron character teeming with love for life and freedom. Tom Medina is the 19th feature by the filmmaker, who has notably won acclaim in Locarno (scooping the Silver Leopard in 1997 for Gadjo dilo), Berlin (gracing the 2012 Panorama line-up with the documentary Indignados) and, most importantly, in Cannes, where he has featured in the Official Selection showcase.

First Us Trailer for Egyptian Crime Thriller 'The Nile Hilton Incident'
"Sir, I saw what happened at the Hilton." Strand Releasing has debuted the first official trailer for Tarik Saleh's The Nile Hilton Incident, an intense political thriller set against the back drop of the Egyptian Revolution. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and the film won the top Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema Dramatic competition during the festival. The cast features Fares Fares, Mari Malek, Yasser Ali Maher, Slimane Dazi, Ahmed Selim, Mohamed Yousry, and Hania Amar. The Forbidden Room | Review
Dreams! Visions! Madness!: Maddin & Johnson’s Extravagant Symphony of Silent Cinema Fantasia

Those familiar with the works of auteur Guy Maddin, sometimes referred to as the Canadian David Lynch, know to expect strange hybrids of silence film techniques mixed with zany weirdness that often reflect delightfully perverse and sometimes queer dynamics mixed in with its dashes of visual inventiveness and extreme narrative playfulness. While he still creates a healthy amount of short film projects and is involved with other installations in-between feature films, including several notable unions with actress Isabella Rossellini, who has starred in The Saddest Music in the World (2003), Keyhole (2011) and as narrator of the brilliant Brand Upon the Brain! (2006), his latest has been in gestation over a period of several years, at one point known as Seances and Spiritismes, and it was uncertain whether this would ever be a theatrical release. Known finally as The Forbidden Room,...

‘Only Lovers Left Alive’ Review
Stars: Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowska, John Hurt, Anton Yelchin, Jeffrey Wright, Slimane Dazi, Carter Logan | Written and Directed by Jim Jarmusch

It’s fair to say that after Twilight many horror fans thought it was time to retire the vampire for a while. The fact is the point about the fanged ones is that they tend not to die when they are meant to, so what they need is something to make them a little more relevant in the world of monsters. A very good way to do just that is to take Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston and make one of the best vampire movies in years, though don’t expect too much horror in Only Lovers Left Alive, it’s much too sophisticated for that.

When Adam (Tom Hiddleston) an underground musician reaches the pits of depression it takes his lover Eve (Tilda Swinton) to give...

April is here and with it comes a considerable month for specialty film releases Stateside thanks to new films from Jim Jarmusch, Lars von Trier, Jonathan Glazer, David Gordon Green and Errol Morris, among others.
