David Letterman opened Sunday night’s Kennedy Center Honors by telling the audience in the Opera House, “Tonight, it is quite nice, very nice, to see the presidential box once again being occupied.”
The crowd cheered and then gave President Joe Biden a standing ovation, after which Letterman quipped, “The same with the Oval Office.”
The ceremony marked a return to the large-scale, lavish gala of tradition, as Covid-19 forced last year’s ceremony to be postponed and later scaled back. But it also was the return of the presidential seal of approval, after four years in which President Donald Trump did not attend or host a pre-ceremony reception at the White House.
Instead, Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted honorees Justino Diaz, Berry Gordy, Joni Mitchell, Bette Midler and Lorne Michaels for an event in the East Room before the ceremony. The president gave Michaels, the creator of Saturday Night Live,...

Only on Saturday Night Live would it be beside the point that Kate McKinnon is the show’s first openly gay woman. Since her debut just over a year ago, she has single-handedly revived the perennial show’s long lineage of searing, spot-on impersonations that rival those of Darryl Hammond, Gilda Radner and Martin Short. Her versions of Shakira, Penelope Cruz, Jodie Foster and Edie Falco don’t just come close; like any good caricature, they actually redefine the way you see the original person.
And yet, McKinnon is used so sparingly it begs putting the question to Lorne Michaels: What the hell are you waiting for? Her talent is bigger and brighter than some of your full-time cast members. She’s your ticket out of the malaise that has beset Season No. 38.

On last night’s The New Normal, the story revolved around a pretend wedding for elementary-schoolers Shania and Wilbur, who, after three and half weeks of courtship, felt it was time to put a ring on it. Bryan used this opportunity to live out his dreams of a wedding with David, making it a fabulous event that included lamb sliders and a dress made of leaves. Of course, no wedding is complete without a tearjerking speech. Instead, Rocky, played by NeNe Leakes, read the words of Shania’s favorite poet, Nicki Minaj.
“You always told me forget the haters, just get my money, just get my weight up,” quoted NeNe, from Nicki’s 2010 song “Right Thru Me.” You can watch the whole moving recitation in the video above. When the show aired, the Real Housewife tweeted “I live 4 Nikki chile.” Now we can only hope for a cameo of NeNe...

NBC slipped in another sneak preview of the pilot for Ryan Murphy's new series, "The New Normal." The show was stealth-previewed during the 2012 Olympics, but it was late at night and lacking much of a promotional push. Not so this time around, as the show was heavily hyped and debuting after the third season launch of "The Voice."
While the series is about a gay couple, Bryan and David, who work with a young woman, Goldie, as a surrogate mother so they can have a child, it's the supporting characters that really broke out during this pilot. Particularly, Ellen Barkin, who plays Goldie's grandmother, Jane, and NeNe Leakes as David's assistant, Rocky.
Jane is one of the most homophobic and racist characters to hit television in a long time, and while both her granddaughter and great-granddaughter try to rein her in, Rocky proved willing to go toe-to-toe with her.

Ann Romney or no Ann Romney, Modern Family’s Cam and Mitch better watch out — there’s another couple vying to become America’s favorite same-sex pairing. The New Normal premieres on NBC on September 11, but the pilot is already streaming on Hulu — and, much like the first episode of The Mindy Project, it proves that Normal is a promising new series with a few minor wrinkles. Here’s what I took away from Episode 1:

Newt Gingrich's faux outrage at a joke made by Robert De Niro is the latest evidence of a thriving apology extortion racket in public life
Robert De Niro got into trouble last week for telling a joke. When introducing Michelle Obama at a Democratic fundraiser, he said: "Callista Gingrich, Karen Santorum, Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?" It went down well at the time but the next day Newt Gingrich seemed unamused: "What De Niro said last night was inexcusable and the president should apologise for him. It was… beyond the pale and he should be ashamed of himself."
That's a tough response. Gingrich reckons that De Niro's remark is so offensive that he can't even apologise for it himself. The apology has to come from the head of state. Not even Russell Brand ever went so far that...

About a week ago, we got a look at a 17-minute film, called "The Road We've Traveled," which is part of President Obama's re-election campaign. The film (watch here) is directed by Davis Guggenheim (Waiting for Superman, An Inconvenient Truth) and narrated by Tom Hanks. And now Hanks finds himself involved in a racial controversy after a video from 2004 surfaced online. The video shows the actor and Eagles rocker Glenn Frey at a fundraiser for St. Matthew's Parish School in California, a school that their children attended. They are joined by James Montgomery, an investment banker, who is dressed in blackface and with a big Afro wig. "This is as close to diversity as we'll get at St. Matthew's," Frey joked. Conservative groups are calling the video "racist" and calling for Obama to remove Hanks from his campaign video. "I don't care what your politics are, it's nauseatingly racist,...

I suppose it had to happen soon to one the cast of the Jersey Shore, but The Situation has entered rehab.
Josh Brolin is set to host Saturday Night Live April 7th, with musical guest Gotye, further convincing me that those kids should get off my lawn.
Speaking of music, Gavin Creel released Get Out yesterday, and I found it surprising, in a good way. I was expecting big anthemic ballads, but he had some harder stuff on there and some dance remixes. Really enjoying it.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt really has no idea how the time machine works in Looper. But he says he modeled his performance on Bruce Willis, who plays the older version of his character. Was that so Willis didn't have to act at all?
Tom Hanks released a statement calling a years-old video that surfaced of him on stage with someone in blackface "hideously offensive then and is hideously offensive now.

De Niro Apologises For 'Inappropriate' Fundraiser Joke

Robert De Niro has apologised for joking about the wives of the Republican U.S. presidential hopefuls during a fundraiser for Barack Obama on Monday night.
The Hollywood actor, his wife Grace Hightower and America's First Lady, Michelle Obama, hosted a dinner to raise donations for President Obama's re-election campaign at New York's Greenwich Hotel.
De Niro took to the stage in front of guests including movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and hip-hop supercouple Beyonce and Jay-z, but his speech fell flat when he made a joke he made about the wives of Republican presidential candidates Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney.
Before introducing the First Lady to the stage, he said, "Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?"
Michelle Obama's aides weren't happy with the quip, telling CNN, "We believe the joke was inappropriate," and De Niro has now apologised for his comment in a statement.
He says, "My remarks, although spoken with satirical jest, were not meant to offend or embarrass anyone, especially the first lady."...

Robert DeNiro has responded to Newt Gingrich's charge that a joke he made about the country not being "ready for a white First Lady" were divisive and "inexcusable."
"My remarks, although spoken with satirical jest, were not meant to offend or embarrass anyone -- especially the First Lady,” DeNiro said in a statement to Talking Points Memo.
Michelle Obama's campaign press secretary also stopped short of apologizing for DeNiro's joke, saying Tuesday that it was "inappropriate" and declining further comment.
DeNiro made the quip Monday night at an Obama campaign event he co-hosted with the First Lady.
"Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white First Lady?" he asked the crowd. "Too soon, right?"
Newt Gingrich reacted explosively on Tuesday, tearing into DeNiro for being a rich, out-of-touch Hollywood actor and condemning his joke for being racially charged.

Washington -- Actor Robert De Niro opened a fundraiser starring Michelle Obama by listing her Republican rivals and jokingly suggesting that America isn't "ready for a white first lady." Newt Gingrich was not amused, and the Obama campaign says the quip was inappropriate.
Gingrich on Tuesday called De Niro's comment "inexcusable" and demanded an apology from President Barack Obama.
"I think that Robert De Niro's wrong," Gingrich said at a campaign stop in Shreveport, La. "The country is ready for a new first lady, and he doesn't have to describe it in racial terms."
Gingrich said the president should be held accountable "when someone at his event says something as utterly and totally unacceptable as Robert De Niro said last night. And I call on the president to apologize for him."
Obama didn't apologize, but his campaign didn't stand by the actor's sense of humor, either.

We're not sure what makes these little bits more entertaining, how Andy can reluctantly morph his face into Newt's, or how big Conan can make his eyes on command.
But in terms of recreating couples' portraits, you truly can't ask for a better pair of improvisors. Especially when it comes to the kiss photo -- the passion there is palpable.

A cartoon elephant (left) and Callista Gingrich. Is Newt in the suit? Photo via Twitter.Newt Gingrich has had it up to here with this primary’s odious frivolity. He whined about this and more during a recent Google Plus dish sesh. “When the CNN commenter said to me, ‘Which is it, Dancing with the Stars or American Idol?,’ I should have stopped him and said, ‘Wait a second, you have 14 million unemployed, $2 trillion deficit, three wars in the Middle East, and this is the junk you want us to waste time on?’” he told his Internet friends. “They have a desperate need to trivialize the presidency of the United States.” The following is an abridged list of ways Newt Gingrich has personally trivialized the presidency of the United States:...

So Callista Gingrich forced Newt's campaign implosion by dragging him on an Aegean cruise? Hardly-she's just joined Marsha Barbour and Cheri Daniels as the latest victim of the Gop's ugly new fad: Blame the wife.
The more I think about it, I'm starting to get a little disappointed in Richard Nixon. Why didn't his team ever figure out that all of his problems, from Watergate to pesky reporters to, well, the Jews, could so easily be dumped on his wife? "It's Pat-she drove us to these reckless decisions. We all tried to stop her." But those were the days when Republican wives were quiet homemakers in their "respectable cloth coats," not all uppity like Jackie Kennedy.

The former speaker's top aides bolted en masse Thursday, leaving his campaign in tatters. Peter J. Boyer on staffers' complaints about Gingrich's rogue inclinations, the Greek cruise with wife Callista that was the final straw-and whether the candidate has any chance of recovering.
Newt Gingrich's troubled campaign for the Republican presidential nomination finally imploded Thursday when the core of his political team, vexed by the candidate's own erratic performance, quit en masse. The decisive moment came in a meeting at Gingrich's Washington, D.C. office between the candidate and his top two operatives, campaign manager Rob Johnson and strategist Sam Dawson, who had hoped to convince Gingrich that his approach as a candidate-which one insider described as "appalling" -needed a drastic transformation. When Gingrich did not agree, Johnson and Dawson said they were done.

In my 22 years in Washington, this is the first one I can remember involving a little blue box.

Over the last two days, both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, perhaps reacting to Newt Gingrich’s announcement of his forthcoming announcement concerning his presidential ambitions, have published pieces about Gingrich’s “secret weapon.” According to The Times, it just may be Callista Gingrich, Newt’s former mistress and current wife, while the Journal identified Gingrich’s “secret weapon” as his conglomerate of “advocacy and for-profit groups,” known unofficially as Newt Inc.
