Diego Westendarp is a Mexican composer with over ten years of experience in the Mexican industry. He has created soundtracks for successful blockbusters and for independent movies that have received multiple awards in international festivals.
His music is conceived to amplify emotions and touch the hearts of the audience.
He began his career as a composer for audiovisual media before turning twenty, collaborating with film director Rafael Montero, with whom he worked on motion pictures such as Fachon Models and Parallel Roads, which were on the National Top Ten list during their commercial runs in theaters.
He also composed the music for The Tears, directed by independent filmmaker Pablo Delgado. This movie won awards in renowned international festivals such as the Locarno Film Festival and the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
He has also composed music for various documentaries and short films, some of which have been screened and awarded internationally, such as Pia Mater.
Complementary to his cinematographic career, he has also composed music for advertising, having worked with international companies like Nissan, Toyota, Nestlé, Coca-Cola, and Save The Children, amongst others.
In 2012, he took part in the 3rd Film Music Lab, organized by Bertha Navarro, producer of Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, where he had composer Michael Nyman as one of his mentors.
After meeting Gus Reyes in the Lab, Diego worked for three years as a production assistant and additional composer for the Mexican Academy Award winner.
Diego Westendarp studied musical composition at the CIEM Music School, where he had Doctor María Antonieta Lozano, one of the most important developers of music teaching in Mexico, as his harmony and piano teacher.
He plays piano, guitar, and all kinds of plucked string instruments, and from the age of fourteen began composing his first instrumental pieces on guitar.
Being passionate about the filming set and storytelling, Diego took a break in his career as a movie composer in 2016 to focus on music for advertising to grow as a creator. He has, in collaboration with his partner Alina Montero, directed commercials, successful branded content campaigns, experimental music documentaries, and personal pieces for which he has also composed the music.
Nowadays, Diego has resumed musical composition, and continues to develop musical projects along with his fiancé.
