Athens-based Endorphin Film Sales has acquired the rights to “Kick and Scream,” the directorial debut of Croatian actress Nina Violić, the company announced this week at the Thessaloniki Film Festival.
The film follows the final half-hour of a marriage that is falling apart, shown from the perspectives of the wife, husband, and their 6-year-old child. As reality intertwines with puppet play, the characters’ own truths are revealed, challenging the viewer’s initial judgments.
“Kick and Scream” is produced by Vanja Sremac and Zdenka Gold for Spiritus Movens, in co-production with Terminal 3, MP Filmska Produkcija, Zagreb Film, Propeler Film and Antitalent.
Endorphin’s Christina Pelekani said the company was looking for an almost completed film to add to its slate when they found “Kick and Scream” in the First Cut+ section of When East Meets West, the Trieste Film Festival’s co-production forum.
“We knew from the first moment that this could be the one,...

As the Thessaloniki Intl. Film Festival celebrates its 60th edition, what began as a small-scale celebration called Greek Cinema Week has evolved into a vital platform for filmmakers from Greece and around the region, finding a natural home in this historical crossroads that has at various points been under Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman rule.
“We are in the middle of southeastern Europe and the eastern Mediterranean, so I think Thessaloniki is the key town to introduce the huge neighborhood from the south bank of the Danube to the Adriatic, from the Black Sea until the Nile,” says festival artistic director Orestis Andreadakis.
For this year’s edition, which takes place from Oct. 31-Nov. 10, the fest unspools an ambitious slate of festival darlings, provocative premieres and Greek cinema classics.
Competition section Meet the Neighbors will launch with a focus on first and second features by emerging filmmakers from the region. And...

Fantastic Fest, the touchstone of envelope-pushing genre films, has released its first wave of programming and revealed that Taikai Waititi’s anti-hate satire Jojo Rabbit will be opening the 15th edition of the Austin-based film festival which kicks off September 19 and continues through September 26.
Jojo Rabbit, which will make its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest, tells the story of a lonely young boy growing up in World War II Germany. In addition, Jim Mickle will return to the fest to present the World Premiere of In the Shadow of the Moon, a mind-bending sci-fi film starring Boyd Holbrook as a Philadelphia police officer who begins tracking a serial killer...
