Along with Keishi Otomo and Takashi Miike, Shinsuke Sato completed the trio of Japanese directors who truly excel in action anime/manga adaptations, with his works in “Gantz”, “Library Wars”, “I am a Hero” etc speaking for themselves. “Kingdom 2: Far and Away”, which continues the adaptation of the homonymous manga by Yasuhisa Hara, highlights the fact in the most eloquent fashion as it currently streams on Netflix, just before the third part's release later this year.

With a selection from the “top of the shelf” once more, as the films of Keishi Otomo, Yuya Yagira, and the next big anime thing “Slam Dunk” eloquently highlight, Japan Cuts showcased how the top of the Japanese movie industry fares currently, while not forgetting the “hidden gems” aspect, with the returns of Yusaku Matsumoto and Daisuke Miyazaki and the presentation of “Sanka”, a film that has passed absurdly under the radar, moving into that direction. The general direction in terms of selection seemed to move towards mainstream paths, with the shorts, the animation and the documentary “I am a Comedian” adding an element of diversity. Without further ado, here is a list of this year's coverage of Japan Cuts.

Director Keishi Ohtomo returns to feudal Japan with his newest picture, “The Legend and Butterfly.” Having concluded the live-action “Rurouni Kenshin” film series, Ohtomo shifts gears for his latest feature, focusing more on real Japanese history, albeit with a heavily fictitious spin in a screenplay by Ryota Kosawa. The story deals with the rise and fall of Japanese daimyo Oda Nobunaga and explores his relationship with his wife, Nohime. This feature wouldn't be the first time Lord Nobunaga has been depicted in film or television. Still, with a big budget and an all-star cast, this epic was set to sweep away audiences and the box office while commemorating the 70th-anniversary celebration of Toei Company. Yet, despite a strong opening, it quickly dwindled in popularity and was met with mixed reception.

The Legend and Butterfly, directed by Japanese director Keishi Otomo and written by Ryota Kosawa, is an epic story set in the Warring States Period in Japan, where a man and a woman come together under special circumstances to become husband and wife. Their relationship undergoes monumental stages as the history of Japan takes shape in the background. Starring Takuya Kimura and Haruka Ayase, The Legend and Butterfly marks their third collaboration together. The performances are worthy of praise as they helm this period drama and elevate it into a grand love story.

Probably one of the best years for action/martial arts cinema lately, 2021 saw a number of truly impressive titles coming out, as China’s blockbusters seem to be getting better, followed by the Korean ones, Japanese manga adaptations continue to be on a very high-level, at least production level-wise and Asean countries keep on producing some of the most interesting in the category through the combination of social commentary and exploitation elements. Furthermore, a number of movies that do not fall in any of the aforementioned groups but are of equal quality, rounded up a truly great year for Asian genre.
Without further ado, here are the best Asian martial arts/action films of 2021, in reverse order. Some films may have premiered in 2019, but since they mostly circulated in 2021, we decided to include them.

The main asset of the Japanese movie industry has always been a stability, particularly in terms of production quality, which, even in the years where countries like S. Korea held the sceptres of the ‘Best Asian Cinema’, did not “allow” local titles to be very far off. In that regard, it is easy to say that, even if Japanese filmmakers do not come up with masterpieces so often (at least not as often as in the past), the local industry remains the one that produces more “7/10” movies than any other in the world, consistently. This stability became much more obvious this year, since Korean cinema seems to have hit a reef that is more evident that it was before, and gradually, Japanese cinema seems to have reached the top of Asia once more, even if the level was a bit lower this year. The films that follow prove the fact in the most eloquent way.

Based on the manga by Ken Wakui, which is also an ongoing anime series by Liden Films, “Tokyo Revengers” brings together two rather popular concepts, those of high school gangs and time travel, in a rather impressive package that has already sold around 1.66 million tickets, earning over 2.25 billion yen (~US$20.4 million), 1 month after its premiere on July 10, 2021 .
“Tokyo Revengers” is screening at Fantasia International Film Festival
As the film begins, a naked, tattooed yakuza is bloodied and terrorized by a new breed of sharp-dressed gangsters in a luxury car. The Tokyo Manji Gang is flexing its muscle, and a furious conflict within the underworld is in motion. The focus then changes completely, towards Takemichi Hanagaki, a 26-year-old freeter with no hope in life, who learns one day that his middle school ex-girlfriend, Hinata Tachibana, as well as her younger brother Naoto, are killed during the aforementioned incident. "I've never seen him look so tormented before." Warner Bros Japan has released an official trailer for the epic new back-to-back series of movies titled Rurouni Kenshin: The Final and Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning. These are part of an ongoing series of Japanese period action-adventure films based on the manga of the same name written and illustrated by Nobuhiro Watsuki. The first one, Rurouni Kenshin: Origins, originally debuted in 2012. These next two are back-to-back sequels, technically the fourth and fifth films in the series, opening in theaters in Japan within months of each other later in the spring. Takeru Satoh returns as Himura Kenshin, joined by Emi Takei, Mackenyu, Munetaka Aoki, Yū Aoi, Yusuke Iseya, and Riku Ōnishi. This looks completely like a live-action anime set in the old times, with stylized action and endless characters with grudges and much more. Might be a kick ass double feature! Check it out.

From a collection of graphic novels, to an animated television series, to Playstation video games – it seems that the natural progression of the Rurouni Kenshin franchise is a move into cinema, and this popular Japanese manga has finally made its way to the big screen. Though it may not be particularly well known outside of East Asia, with a theatrical release in over 60 nations worldwide, perhaps it’s about time we got to know what Rurouni Kenshin is all about.
Directed by Keishi Ohtomo, we set foot into 1868, in the aftermath of the brutal Bakumatsu war. We delve into the life of Kenshin (Takeru Satô), a former assassin who, in a bid to repent for past sins, has decided to protect the locals, living by an oath to never kill again, One of those in need is Kaoru Kamiya (Emi Takei), a fearsome yet vulnerable woman who seeks in defending...

You can’t keep a wandering Samurai down. Take a look at the latest UK trailer for Keishi Ohtomo’s latest actioner “Rurouni Kenshin”, based on the popular manga. Apparently back in feudal Japan Samurais started really young, because the main character here, who is supposed to be a badass swordsman who has been active for the last 10 years or so, looks barely 17. Must be the good wandering Samurai food. And the pop music soundtrack never hurts, I suppose. Ex-assassin Kenshin Himura (Takeru Satô) has made a vow never to kill again. Now a wandering samurai, Kenshin protects those in hope of reparation. Finding a home at a failing dojo run by Miss Kaoru (Emi Takei), he becomes entangled in a string of murders related to a drug ring run by the ruthless Kanryuu (Teruyuki Kagawa). If you like samurai action flicks with a hefty dose of style and blood, then director Keishi Ohtomo’s upcoming endeavor “Rurouni Kenshin” is a motion picture that you should strongly concern yourself with. I’ve been told that the manga is worth reading, though, honestly, I doubt I’ll ever get around to checking it out. Here’s hoping the movie makes for a suitable substitution. I’m sure the manga’s fans will chime in once this thing hits theaters later this year. Need a synopsis? I happen to have one in my pocket: Former legendary assassin Kenshin Himura has now become a wandering samurai. Offerring aid & protecting those in need as atonement for his past deeds.
